What/How Did You Practice Today?

I practice in April.

I'm roughly half-way between practice sessions.

Very admiring of the dedication, however.

It may have served me well at some point.

I've been getting a lot of traction out of _not_ hitting golf balls (..plus it's helping save the old, achy back for an actual round)...

..been doing the Slow Motion Drill, including breaking it down into pieces; vary using just an old steel shaft, a weighted trainer iron and even trying it with an Orange Whip.

Finally starting to understand the body movements and positions my instructor has been trying to drill (literally) into my aging brain 🤪

Combination of testing/tweaking and practice today. Threw some grips on my 7-iron and PW along with some strips of lead tape to find out where I liked them for SW with the new Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 shafts. Using these as my test clubs before I put the rest of my irons together because I wasn't sure if I wanted to try an MOI matched set. Turns out I do. 7-iron performed best at a D4 and the PW at a D6 using 3/8" steps. Will put the rest together somewhere along the line later today. Except for the wedges. Those will have to wait because of some screwy mistakes thanks to the less than trustworthy individual that put the Rifle shafts in years ago. Live and learn right?

Haven't swung an iron in a few weeks because of the shaft situation so I just wanted to get some swings in. Everything seemed good so I took out the HiBore XL and it's potential replacement to compare side by side. I've been working on some speed training drills so I wanted to see where I was at. I'm continuing to see steady, slow progress as long as I clear the 17,000 thoughts out of my head. The more I think about the mechanics of my swing, the tighter my body goes and it really restricts me.

... I played with 2 beginners yesterday in their mid 20's and both have been playing a little less than 1 year. One of them froze over the ball, clearly tensing up after 2 very deliberate practice swings and hit some horrendous shots off the tee. Dribbled one about 10yds, ran and grabbed it and was gonna hit it off the tee again. I said "Try this once. Step up with no practice swings and take no time at all and just swing the club." He hit his best drive of the day and said he was so uncomfortable doing it he just couldn't do it again. He agreed it was his best tee shot but said it was just a lucky drive because he didn't even have time to think about what he was doing. 🤪

Did you tell that was the whole point of playing... not thinking what he was doing??

... He was pretty adamant about "keeping his routine". I did what I could and hopefully planted a seed that grows down the line. I usually never give unsolicited advice but it was so painful watching him I felt I had to this time.

Brought out my old Odessay 9 putter. Toe hang and heel shafted. Not many players use it on tour except Mickelson.
Immediately felts really good putting on the green. Something about the design makes me forward press for shorter putts.  I like letting the club rotate and swing naturally from long distance   For shorter putt I tend to forward press and lean the shaft ( it feels my way to reduce putter face rotation. )

I think modern putter designs are too complicated for me. Need to go back in time once in a while to figure out my stroke

I’m pretty sure most of today’s putter shaft insertion like plumbers neck. And the goose necks have a built in forward lean now that I think about it. I really didn’t need to forward press those types of putter  For whatever reason I kinda miss that part of my routine with the old style putters

Got the Skytrak up for a bit for some last minute numbers for my review of the T100-S.  It was such a nice day that I decided to go to the range - Bad Idea!  By that point, I had made so many swings that I could not get through the bucket and my timing was gone.

I'm playing on Wednesday at one of my favorite courses in the area - The Fort Golf Course in Indianapolis and hoping I have it back by then.

It was a combo of practice and equipment optimization. Rolling some putts indoors with the new putter I built, White Hot OG 1W with a LAGP 105 shaft and P2 classic grip. I knew the key for me was to add some counterweighting, but had to get creative because with the length of the graphite shaft, the inner diameter was too small to fit any traditional counterweight on the market (even the Tourlock Slim wouldn't fit). So I took off the actual weight of the Tourlock and was left a long bolt and the cap on it. That bolt is a little over 30 grams. Put some electrical tape on it so that it wouldn't bang around in the shaft. That counterweighting stabilized the hands and wrists for me, much smoother stroke. Now it feels like a back and forth stroke, not a back and then hit.

Trying to be more accurate on the really short chips and green side bunker shots with  fast downhill greens

I feel that if I hold the wedge however open and close and then follow a routine in which I then regrip with my top hand I can keep that face angle

And my hands will not want the clubface to rotate and square up.
Felt really good for those touch shots around the green

Missing short putts when I last played

Practice 2 footers to gain confidence and slowly moved back one foot at a time

I think what happening is that I get that I move my head and eyes during the stroke With short putts 2.5 feet my head stays still and I can see the hole in the peripheral of visual fields   I sure that why no one misses under 2 feet

Dont why I don’t do this anymore but I use to look a spot just back of the ball and make sure my was square to that spot at impact at contact.  Was good for keeping my ball online and prevents me for looking up to early

great range session tonight.

i had my wedges bent 2* flat to fight my constant left miss with wedge shots and everything was point and shoot. i was hitting the ball on my number and on my target.

after warming up with half a bucket, i decided to “play a round”. i went through the first 15 holes of my home course and my swing felt really free and easy through the whole bag. i pured an 8 iron right at the 175 flag on “15” and called it a day there.

i ended with a short driver speed session. 20 all out swings not caring about where the ball went. i’m trying to establish a baseline for this winter’s speed training and possibly a shot at competing in long drive. here’s the best swing of the night. most of the rest were 128+

Maybe I’m going crazy but now I’m going through the 3rd putter that “works”   I was having trouble with my short putts and grab an old Newport that I thought I was hoping to sell. Tried different setup and styles then old of sudden I was sinking a lot of putts   Went to another green that had steep uphill and downhill with lots of break just to make sure it’s not  just “practice” on the same flat green all the time that made it easier.
I been using mallets and it always felt that I was suppose to hit the ball on the center.  That felt good.  With the Newport I was sinking putts hitting closer to the toe. Plus I was having excellent distance control.

Short putts were tough as I like to “bang” ball in. Lots of lip outs. Then I tried this routine where I would bounce the putter on the ground Do a practice stroke with my left arm at the cup without holding the putter
Setup to putt , then lift the putter off the ground with my left arm only (I guess it would be like a hover) and my stroke seem to have excellent back of the cup speed.  No lip outs.  Worked well as I got further away from the hole.
The other way I did it was wiping the toe and lightly tap the toe of the putter on the green before putting. This routine gave me more inconsistent results but was much better when I had a downhill break

Went to the short game practice area to work on my pitches again.   Overall went pretty well;  contact and distance control were both pretty good.

Only problem was I hit into a yellow ball family reunion.

I apologized and asked if they knew @Yellow Ball  They all got pretty quiet when I mentioned him so I just dropped the subject.   When I was leaving I got stopped by Bob;  I am terrible with names and I think he said it was Bob.   Anyway Bob said that that are all a little hesitant to talk about @Yellow Ball since he skips all the family events and seems to like hanging out with MGS people more.  I heard some great stories from Bob,  he was up from Augusta and lives in the pond on the 16th at Augusta National.  He said it favorite time of the year was the Masters when the players skip balls across the pond,  He just has to keep his head down.   Bob also said while the group as a whole has a couple of Vice's, @Yellow Ball had a good looking cover, but if you looked at the core he was a little off center.

I see the Vice's are a little green with envy being around greatness.

You know what happens when you try to put a round ball in square pants? .......... you wind up with a face like that!

Sushhhhh, your not supposed to tell people I'm a little off center. Why do you think I'm hardly in the fairway? I know I'm warped (and it's not just my sense of humor). If they stop hitting me then I'll have no stories to tell.

At the wedges again in the back yard.  Finally feeling a bit of a groove with the Stan Utley stuff and really starting to get the feel for the right stroke.  The grip, takeaway, and release are starting to feel a little more natural and I'm starting to feel like I have really good face control.  Today I mostly worked on getting proper contact and controlling distance.

I've devised a little back yard game that takes a bit to accomplish.  My daughter's sandbox is a 6x6 octagon that I put my 2' chipping net in the center of.  The goal , from the 10 or so yards of space I have,  is to land all of the 100 or so random golf balls I have in the shag bag in either the chipping net or the sand box.  Eventually the aim will be to hit them all into the net, but at this point in the short game rebuild I think a 6x6 target qualifies as close for me.   Anything I miss gets shagged and brought back to the matt until I land ever ball in either the net or sandbox.  The first time I did it I ran out of time to accomplish the task (hours).  The second time it took me right around an hour with long stretches of major frustration at misses.  Today I did it in about 30 minutes with a shockingly large % in the actual net.

That was the major victory today.  The other victories today were that I don't think I skulled a single shot and I all of a sudden have enough hand eye coordination and face control to pick up a golf ball from the grass by popping into the air with a wedge.  I have literally never been able to do that until today.

I was having such a nice practice session until I walked over to the practice green and the s!$@:s popped up out of nowhere with my 59.

I eliminating them after a bit with full shots back on the range and the 59 is out, replaced by my SCOR 60.

I did monkey with the loft settings on my driver before settling back to what worked at my fitting - 1 lower. Mainly hit random shots once my issue was resolved - sort of a simulated round.

Had a good indoor lesson today working on wedges - especially contact and distance control.

Instructor put me in different virtual situations around a few greens on the sim, varying the carry & rollout on each shot.

Really helpful session as wedge play had been costing me strokes my last few rounds.

Do you have a course nearby where you can do the same thing on grass?  This is one of my favorite things to practice when I go to our course.

I've been trying to get some video of swings with the Sub70 849 Pro recently for review purposes and noticed I am not getting very good wrist set.  So I worked on that last evening and could see a difference in the 5 & 6 iron ballflight especially.  A little more distance and I didn't feel like I was jerking through the impact zone to get it.  I just have to remember that swing thought the next time out.

@Kenny B  the course looks like its in great shape.

i had my wedges bent 2* flat to fight my constant left miss with wedge shots and everything was point and shoot. i was hitting the ball on my number and on my target.

I usually buy wedges off the rack and don't think about having them checked.  After some issues with my 58* Callaway MD5 coming up much shorter than I would think and just being a bit all over the place than what I'm accustomed to, I had all my wedges checked.

Sure enough, I started to get the flight I was looking for and flying the distance I would expect.  I was surprised how much a little adjustment made, and while I still don't love the MD5, it's been much better and at least consistent.

Glad it's working out so well after your adjustment as well.
