What/How Did You Practice Today?

Recommended Posts

Very long practice session this morning.  Spent about an hour with my wedges in and out of the sand, 30 minutes on the putting green and another 45 minutes working on full swing accuracy inside 120 yards.

All the time and effort on my short approach game is finally starting to feel like it's going somewhere.  I had pretty much the best day with my wedges that I've ever had.  All the feel I've been trying to build for months seems to have finally come to fruition.

I warmed up today using my 60 -- which I mostly use  to practice.  It's not super forgiving and kind of forces me to be precise.  The alternative is digging a trench and shorting the ball or skulling the ball into the next county.  After warming up I swapped it out to the more forgiving higher bounce 56 and scattered balls randomly around the green so that I wouldn't be hitting the same chip twice in a row.  To my surprise I found that I now had the touch to play it from every type of pitch and chip off every lie from the fringe to 40 yards off the green.

Don't get me wrong I'm not exactly throwing darts yet but I'm comfortably landing on the green with all my shots from further out -- giving myself a reasonable chance to get up and down --  and occasionally threatening the hole enough that I have a very high percentage of getting up and down.   From inside 10 yards it feels like I'm going to get up and down more times than I won't.  And, from inside 5 yards, I finally feels like I have a level of control that I have putting -- I'm definitely going to threaten the hole, I might actually hole out, and I will be very disappointed if I don't get up and down. (effectively like being disappointed in not two putting)

Putting today was hit and miss.  I either had an off day or have been neglecting it a little too much.  In any case I worked on a consistent putting stroke from 4 ft, 8ft, and 10 ft.  I was just a bit off today  and didn't hole a lot from any distance.  Speed was okay but my stroke felt a little shaky.  I worked through it by putting tees down so I was forced into a straight back and straight through stroke and that seemed to help.  I finished it up by working on long uphill lags from 30 ft.  That also went okay but it resulted in a lot more low percentage 2nd putts than I would have liked.  I did manage to clean some longer ones up with 13/20 being two putts.  But there were still 7 3 putts in that practice.  I need to really work on that aspect of my game.

On the actual range I continued my wedge focus but with full swings.  I hit PW through 60 exclusively through a small bucket of 40.  My focus was on solid contact and accuracy so I was swinging at 95% and working on distances in line with my yardage booklet.  I picked a green at 110 yards with pretend sand and water in front of it and behind it.  I used those for targets and worked up and down my wedges trying to hit each target like it was a green.   I think that if I were aiming at real greens I would have been on a solid percentage of the time and just off the rest of the time.

All and all a very solid 2.5 hours of range time.  As always, let's hope it translates to the course.

I put my clubs away for the winter   except my putter

When anchoring banned was in effect some years ago  I spend the winter practicing  standard length putter and was somewhat proficient with the standard flat stick past few years  but I went back to the broom stick  this season for a while to get my confidence back

I am convinced that anchoring is the easiest way to putt and the arm lock has me intrigued  that its a better anchoring method

I converted bellies to arm lock but seem to flat of a lie angle  I be spending  the winter months lengthening putters and seeing if I can change the lie and loft  and trying various combos

Played a tournament the other day with a guy putting side saddle with an arm lock.  Dude was lights out.  When me missed he missed inside a foot.  It wasn't enough for me to think about converting, but there sure seems to be something about arm locking if you can get it to work.

I failed at getting a round in this week unfortunately but got to the range today. Have not swung a club in about 3 weeks unfortunately and we have had some of the best weather all year the past month 🤦‍♂️

I only hit 10 balls between my driver and 3 wood. Wasn’t all that comfortable today swinging them and wanted to focus on the irons.

Took videos and was noticing I was letting my wrists do the work at the beginning, got into a much better groove, glad I videoed.

My tempo feels great and I have gotten very comfortable with the shorter back swing and high finish, I find my best ball striking is this way. Going to get back into planemate in the next month or so, it’s brought me a long way in the short time I used it, looking forward to continuing the off season.

Had a great session today working on this one drill, then hitting drivers. I take lessons from Tyler and this drill is finally helping me to get the feel of the swing he’s helped me create.

Tested my new shafts today after speed training. Love the Ventus hybrid. So much more height and better face strike. The Ventus driver still tbd. Wasn’t swinging my best with either today and didn’t have my optimal tee height. Ventus is 1/2” shorter in driver than the rdx. Felt I had to swing harder with it to make it go. the Ventus also seemed to be more low on the face. I think I’ll do another range session then a couple rounds to see if the Ventus stays in my driver. Super hybrid was from the deck. Also tweaked my back somehow despite warm up and stretching

Good to hear on the hybrid shaft. For driver, how was the direction of the Ventus vs. the RDX?

Good sign that it’s a bad fit. Having to go after it there will be days that really work and days where it’s going to play havoc. I love the feel and stability of the ventus but I had similar issues with the one I one because it was x flex and just didn’t jive with it when my swing was off

went to the golf store to try some more putters, trying to find the magic wand . Left feeling that I been there , done that and cant see myself paying for an expensive putter that I will only use once

I looking closer at my own putting stroke and will try to get a lesson in putting for the first time . I'm feel Im better golfer  when I try to control the speed more with my right shoulder girdle . Meaning I like to power the putter with my right shoulder , turning, rocking , whatever its called and try tto pace out my putting stroke with that in mind

Also trying a metronome to even out the tempo and not to get to over accelerating and trying for more constant speed through the ball.   I find the feeling I get is  left hand seems  control the  face angle of my putter and right shoulder girdle  control the tempo for most putts

I keep trying to kick this wedge out but every strike is just pure center so I decided it was either my delivery or approach. Thanks to my pro on Thursday we decided it was my delivery. Hit 100 balls or so today before I played and well it is now back off the waiver wire. Every shot with it is just dead nuts center.

What was the issue with the shots that your delivery was causing?  I'm curious if its the same 'slider' funk I get into sometimes.  I'll get sweet spot contact but my hands lag behind and I sweep the ball instead of compressing it so the ball slides up the face and I lose distance and end up slightly right of target.  Very frustrating and takes a good wedge session and lots of deliberate practice to get rid of.

So should I not even bother testing it?

Nothing wrong with testing it but don’t change your swing. When testing you want to see how it works with your normal swing.

if you are changing your swing to try and get it to do whatever your are trying to attempt in a shot then it’s not a true representation of your swing and if it’s a fit.

Thanks. Also realized last night the data I posted was wrong. Apologies. Those were both Ventus logs at higher tee height. Left at 10*, right at 8*. Here is the actual data. Matched at same tee height. Need to do both shafts at a higher tee height.

Similar issue but mine was my front shoulder. Was moving too much up at impact instead of level. This was causing me to lose my angle with my hands and wrists making me deliver too much loft. Or at least that was how it was explained to me. I just took focus on more level shoulders and everything else fell in line.   I like to feel like I am driving a wedge shot and who knew it was me and not the club.

Went to the range to do some drills from a previous teacher, Andreas Kali out of Denmark. You can check out his Instagram page to see a WHOLE BUNCH of kids/young adults he works with at the Danish Golf Academy. He was the only coach that gave me drills to work on my leg action, and one to help get the proper path on the follow-through. His swing ideas for me are more basic than what I’ve been working on with Tyler McGhie, and I know my lower body/legs are always an issue.
First time in awhile I was flushing my irons and hitting a dime-size spot in the center of the face. Andreas does two lessons for $200-ish and Tyler is $300 for one, so I think I’m going to sign-up for 2 more lessons with Andreas.

are you going all in with his swing approach?  I was pointed to his site a while ago and he definitely teaches a specific golf swing method.

Hit 25 putts from 3 feet and 25 from 6 feet. Am currently doing testing for the Odyssey White Hot Rossie so a plus of that is I will be getting a lot of putting practice haha. Head on over to the link to check on my initial impressions and follow along on that thread.

Not sure at this point. Every single teacher I’ve had over the last 7-8 years taught some sort of method. McGhie teaches a type, the guy from Martin Chuck’s group taught a method, etc. I was recommended to a guy at Colonial in Texas but when he became Head Pro that went down the drain. There’s a TPI instructor at a CC 30 miles from here, but they only teach members.

Anyway, it seems like everywhere I turn it’s a “method”.

... Lots of great teachers can teach that way but I found most of my students responded best by learning to continue to do what they do, just do it better. I know you are a really good player but like all of us you probably have tendencies that  hold you back. Recognizing your strengths and building on them while helping to eliminate or reduce your faults is the best way to teach in my humble opinion. There are some players that respond well to breaking down their swing and rebuilding it with a method and to be fair I didn't teach many elite players, mostly 10 index and above although I did have some single digit students. But if you are a natural hitter, teaching you a smooth swinging method isn't gonna work long term nor is teaching a smooth swinger a more explosive hitting motion method. It probably won't come as a surprise that most teachers, teach what they do well.

... My personal philosophy is we all have a natural swing that comes with faults. We spend years and years trying to do something different and in the end we cycle back to our natural swing with our faults reduced or even eliminated. So good luck with your instructor and I hope you find one that helps you be the best you that you can be. 👍

For 99% of the golfers the approach of tweaking what you have is probably the best way since they won’t invest the time necessary to completely overhaul their swing.   I asked about what pmookie was doing because the coach he is using teaches everyone the same swing and the junior players he coaches are successful.   Look on his Instagram page and every kids swing looks basically the same.   They do a lot of indoor time working on technique due to the weather in Denmark.

@cnosil

@chisag

In 2015 or 2016 I started lessons with the top teacher here in Louisiana. He took what I had and made tweaks. Over the course of 2 years my swing looked really good, one-plane, and it was comfortable. Well, the Pro changes his philosophy ENTIRELY to a system, and the next thing you know my swing went to 💩. I left him and started a search. Only one teacher I’ve worked with since didn’t have a method, but was so costly I couldn’t stick with him, and he didn’t do discounted “online” lessons.
I’ve tried Martin Chuck’s guys, Mike Bender, Andreas, and Tyler, ALL systems. Of these, Andreas’s fits me the best for my natural feel.

The beauty of testing a hitting net is that I’m out swinging a club nearly every day. 🙂

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD
