@JerryB, I love the indoor setup you have! How do you like the Garmin?

I like it, though if I could go back I probably wouldn't buy it, if that makes sense.

The GPS part of it is great.  The launch monitor side has been useful and I expect more use of it next season as I continue to be more consistent.

The thing that sold me on it was the thousands of courses that are loaded up, that I could "play" during the winter.  However, with my current setup, I'm worried about swinging any longer clubs since I'm still a little cramped.

So anyway long story, it does what it's supposed to do and does it well but I'm not quite ready to utilize it fully.

Have been working pretty hard on my putting since the end of testing on the Odyssey White Hot. Might be changing my grip to a claw style vs how I was going left hand low. Have been doing the gate drill and am much more consistent getting it through the gate with the claw. Need to do a video though because I feel like the mechanics are all over the place.

I went out and hit a large bucket at the range today. I'm still working to ingrain the feeling of using my left side to pull the club through, which is what I worked with an instructor to promote better weight shift. I've been calling it my frisbee throw, as that's the best way to relate it to my brain.

I'm starting to see some great results with all my clubs. I like to start out small, working with wedges hitting to various targets with my 52, 56, and 60.

My irons and fairways were good today up until the last bit of the bucket where I got a little tired and sloppy. I had to be home to go grocery shopping, got in a hurry, and got out of my routine.  Early on, the iron strike looked good and I actually hit the center a couple of times.

Driver...not so much.

I was hitting it pretty good until the spray went on the club. About mid ways through the bucket I was simulating the first six holes and hit it well.

@JerryB, I love the indoor setup you have! How do you like the Garmin?

Well according to that driver test MGS did you're at least missing in the best place to not lose as much distance.

I've been mining the little 3-pars near me lately for my short game and short iron practice.  There's one right next to my home course that I've ignored for the decade I've been golfing and it's become one of my favorite practice locations.  The best part, it's empty.  Golf may have exploded on full size courses, but all the new beginners (and veteran players like myself) have totally slept on these little short game practice gems.  I can finally do what I used to love doing -- just stop by and play 9 or 18 in a couple hours.

The course has a little exec 9 that more people play and a 3-par 18 which is where I've been spending all my time.  The 3-par has holes ranging from 100 yards to 150 yards, super narrow fairways with a lot of overhanging trees, and teeny tiny little greens with sneaky slope.  The greens are in great shape because they're honestly pretty hard to hit for most people (including myself a lot of the time) and run true.  I've been playing two or three balls and really working on contact & accuracy.  The overhanging trees have forced me into a lot of shot shaping and learning to really flight the ball low.  I'm doing this mostly with foot position and open or closed club face.  I've made huge progress on that front in the last few weeks.  It's been incredible for me on the course to learn how to adjust the trajectory to accommodate where I want the ball to end up.

Some of the things I've learned -- If I want to land in front and bounce on with some runout a low draw works wonders.  If I want it to land and stick a high draw lands soft for me then kicks forward one bounce before back spin stops it cold.  If I want it to zip back I can hit a high fade or cut and the ball will zip back 10-15 feet.  Learning to work the ball has narrowed my misses too.  I find that my miss when I'm trying to work the ball is that I just hit it straight to where my alignment is.  That has made it much easier to select shots on a larger course.  I aim my feet where it won't hurt me and try to use the shape to work the ball closer to the hole.  It worked shockingly well yesterday (my first real round since spending the last three rounds on 3-pars).

It's also really helped with chipping and putting.  Misses are putting my right in my uncomfortable chip/pitch range.  Inside 30 yards and I've been experimenting with different types of shots to see what will get me closes to the pin in different situations.

Same for putting.  I'm getting a lot of real world practice rather than just hammering away at drills on the putting green.

Best of all, the actual play an experimentation is giving me a ton of confidence.  I know what shots I want to hit and how to hit them in different situations.  Now, if I could only find the same type of practice for my long irons.

This past weekend, I worked on finding out where I was hitting my driver on the clubface, and to work on hitting the ball first on my irons. I worked on starting with a little more tilt at driver address. I have, for years, lined up off the toe on both irons and woods. Irons was to combat heel hits, while I don't know why on woods.

I lined up both on the middle and made adjustments. Not shockingly, I hit more on the middle of the driver when lining up on the middle.

Irons, were a different challenge. I do miss left, as well, and feel the club is slightly closed at impact. Since it didn't matter, I lined up on the middle, and did much better hitting it more in the middle of the clubface. A little low, but not on the heel. The majority were solid, but my misses were hitting the ground before the club by an inch or so. Will try to improve this coming weekend.

When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy

I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 7.1 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way.

Except for the putter, everything else was pretty nasty. I'll attribute it to hitting off of mats for the first time in quite a while and 2 nights of lost sleep - our new puppy keeps wanting to play at 3:30 am!

Making a concerted effort to make some changes in my setup. I have for the longest time had a nasty habit of getting too hunched over at setup. What I found was that I would hinge my wrists way too much at setup by bending over and dropping the arms and hands in, and then the toe of the club would be way up at address.

I've been focusing on feeling like the butt of the club is pointing at my belt buckle or higher by removing most of the hinge in my wrists. That magically got me hitting the center of the club more because I wasn't raising the handle nearly as much on the way through.

After having good success with my irons today, I tried hitting my driver for the first time in the garage. It took quite a few swings to get comfortable, but once I did I had some good results. I really have to emphasize a full backswing and what feels like a very subtle pause at the top before exploding down. When I got it right I was very happy, with club speeds touching 116 MPH on the Mevo+ a few times, and ball speeds nearing 167 MPH. Scaling down to "on course" swings yielded 110-112 MPH with 160+ ball speeds so I'm happy with that at the moment.

Swing thought today was long backswing, explode the hands out to the right.

And for those who aren't aware, i am working on a version of the one plane swing, so that's why my hands are high at address the way they are.

I have a growing theory that the courses a player plays at can have a substantial impact on a players handicap. For instance, @edingc's home course (and many of the local courses I play) has a rating and slope on the lower side. I feel like I have a much harder time scoring to my handicap on these courses compared to a few others I play that are probably in the more typical range of ratings. Maybe that's a product of my strengths and weaknesses working/not working at particular setups, but personally I just think of Cody and I as "pretty much scratch-ish, kinda almost" and try to cover up the chip on my shoulder as much as I can 😉

Been under the weather for about a week, but yesterday my son and I played a couple simulated rounds at a local course.  I beat him both times, and even got an ace.  Naturally, he's furious. 😁

Pulled it out again today and used the launch monitor to hit through my whole bag.  Threw caution to the wind and hit the long clubs, too (If I break a club, that means a new club, right??).  Had no issues, and the launch monitor numbers tracked fairly well with what Shot Scope has been telling me so far this year.

Two things that seem impossible when asking someone to swing a club a certain way...

1.  Swing in slow motion...almost never happens or it only happens for the first try then the swing speeds up on subsequent swings.....i am guilty of this.  About every third swing I have to slow down again.

2.  Take a 1/2 swing

regarding #2....I get asked sometimes for advice on wedge shots and the issue is usually a full swing decelerating into the ball so I ask them to take a 1/2 swing and accelerate through the ball.  99 times out of 100 they take a nearly full swing at 1/2 speed.   They think their hands were only waist high in the backswing but in reality they were about shoulder height.  🤔

Hmmm...after typing that I think I need to change how I describe the swing I'm asking for since almost nobody seems to get it.....Much like the line in Coolhand Luke.... what we've got here is a failure to communicate!!  😆

Hit through the bag again today (minus the driver), five shots per club.  Thinking about doing this daily, hoping that it helps me hit the ground running next season.  Striking wasn't quite as good as yesterday.  Pulled out a handful of junk balls and tried to chip them back into the bucket from about 8 or 10 feet away.  Never tried this before; it was remarkably difficult for me.  Aim was pretty accurate but I had trouble getting the distance down.  Most attempts fell short.  Did manage to hit three in a row and 5 out of 6 near the end, so that's promising.

I'm just getting back into the game and many years away and also just had back surgery, so really it's been the perfect opportunity to re-learn the swing and do things better this go round. My motto has been Perfect Practice Makes Perfect.  I practice with may more intention now. Each little practice session is trying to achieve one goal, like moving my hips, transferring weight, correct tee height, dialing in wedge distances, etc

Here's my session where I'm just trying to work on getting my arms out of the way and extended through impact. Just one thing at a time helps me vs trying to fix 15 things at once.

Spent the better part of ninety minutes chipping and hitting short pitches with my wedges, just trying to get everything aligned.  Get my setup right; check.  Now am I hitting them all in the right direction?  Good (usually).  Weight shifts, quarter swings, ball position, on and on.  Hopefully over time I'll figure out which club feels best for these shots and things will flow smoother.

Wild to think about it, though...the options are endless.  More broadly, sometimes fourteen clubs seems like way too many.  Other times it feels like way too few.

Went out last week to play and my chipping and putting was really good

I went to practice the things I could remember that seem to work

1. Routine.  I find that if start my read from behind the cup and then walk on the low side to my ball.   Whenever I start my read behind the ball i would have a preconceived  cut path

2 Once I have the read Rather than saying to myself it’s 2 ball outside or one finger outside (AE) If I say 1/2 cup or 1 cut outside it gives my a more positive imagine of rolling the ball to the cup. As I thinking cup if that makes any sense

3 Short putts I want to enough speed to get 1-2 foot past the cup Once I have speed established I can figure out how much break to play

4 Long putts  Still work in progress.  But I am get better at finding my aiming spot. I find the AE works well  Also have to remind myself the last third of the putt is where the putt slows down and usually breaks the most

A little chilly tonight at 35* but still got a few swings in tonight with a 5i out in the pole barn.  Working on shaft lean and compressing the ball.  My plan is to only practice with 5 or 4 irons this winter to train using a longer iron.  It was so windy this week we had a local leaf rule in effect in there!  🤣

Trying to work on more speed; not something that comes easy for me.  About a year ago I asked Monte what was a good way to increase my swing speed.  He told me to hit balls swinging a lob wedge as fast as I can.  Well, I never make a full swing using my lob wedge because I have no idea where the ball would go; I knew it wouldn't go straight!!  😂

Fast forward to this past month where I have been hitting a ton of balls learning to make better ball-first contact, and I thought about that lob wedge.  I tried hitting a full shot with it and made good contact!  Apparently, all the ball contact practice is paying off; I can now go after a ball as hard as I can.  So, I will be spending my practice session swinging that wedge!  Going to baseline my swing speed with an SC200.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I like to do that as well. Figure if I can consistently hit a 4 iron from the deck then anything shorter should be no issue at all! Or at least that's the hope... 🤣

Eggzactly my theory!!  I had a cavity back 5i and 8i there and would usually grab the 8 to swing.  I took the 8 away and put an blade 4i there with the 5.  I am hoping the blade REALLY gets me trained to hit the sweet spot....i'll see next spring.  At the very least my hands won't be as sensitive to the thin shots by then!! 😁

... OK, I have said many times I am a big believer in whatever works ... works. So if you find this works for you, have at it. That said, keep in mind you want to grove a swing both physically and mentally. One of the main goals should be a free swinging motion, and that is true whether you are a hitter or a swinger. I have found more often than not, those that use a muscle back blade to groove their swing tend to get tense, over think, guide the club and instead of a free swing they begin to have their main focus on hitting the center of the face not the swing as a whole. Obviously hitting the center is ideal as long as it is the result of a free swing, not a goal in and of itself.

... So I am not trying to talk anyone out of anything, just be aware that the best way to improve your ball striking is practicing with the irons/woods you normally use. It not only improves your physical swing, it improves your mental outlook because if you can stripe your 4 iron on the range, you know you can stripe it on the course. Conversely if your mishits are minimized with your iron but more penal with a MB, you know you can mishit your 4 iron which is not the kind of confidence you are trying to build. Good luck!

I've taken this advice to heart and that is now why my "4 iron" is actually a "4 utility." A lot more forgiveness packed in. 👍

As good as the last couple sessions were, today was rough.  Wanted to throw my clubs down in defeat but was afraid I'd miss the ground.

Oh well... tomorrow is another day.

We all have those days.  Sometimes it just feels like the body doesn't want to cooperate for the day.    My advice is to step away when it does because hammering away at golf balls to fix it often (and in my personal experience) can lead you down the road of reinforcing a bad habit.  Trust your swing and take solace in the fact that the better you get the less this type of day will happen.

I haven’t hit a shot other than into my backyard net since the Monday of thanksgivings bing week.

My coach sent me a drill to help my inconsistent ball striking which I can work on anywhere as it doesn’t require hitting shots so I have been.

I absolutely striped the ball on the range today - direction was a bit off but it was off consistently left of target until I started using my super speed stick for alignment

Very good practice for certain

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

If I get my swing dialed in to hit this sweet spot consistently I'll be gaming a very repeatable swing no matter what irons I'm playing.  It is immediate feedback on the contact spot that's for sure.  I hit about 20 tonight with it and only had a couple thin toe shots, most felt real good.  Now that's a real thin top line!!

That’s a cool club and fun to hit I’m sure.

I don’t always know who knows or remembers what here so I will remind that Chisag was a golf instructor. He’s very knowledgeable.  I would always take his advice to heart and consider it twice if I were going to go against it.

Good luck and enjoy
