Still keeping at it with the SuperSpeed System … I may be at week 6 or 7 now in Level 1, but I just hit a new personal best with the last set of reps on the lightest stick at 118.

Speed day today. Rypstick workout followed by balls into the net, focusing on maxing out speed and ball speed. I love focusing on ball speeds because the strike usually has to be pretty good to put up good numbers.

My swing is really starting to feel like it's coming together. I talked about it last week, but I made a change with my hands higher at address. Watching video I'm now starting to return the club to the ball on the downswing on a similar plane as I took it back. Previously, my hands were so low at address that I raised the handle a ton through impact, which was a huge timing move.

Set new personal best ball speeds with the 7 iron and driver, finally breaking through a huge wall at 170 MPH ball speed that I've been trying to hit for almost a year at this point.

It's great to see you've reached the 170 ball speed milestone! You've put in a lot of work the last couple of years and its awesome to watch as you progress.

That’s a cool club and fun to hit I’m sure.

I don’t always know who knows or remembers what here so I will remind that Chisag was a golf instructor. He’s very knowledgeable.  I would always take his advice to heart and consider it twice if I were going to go against it.

Good luck and enjoy

I am aware of his lesson background (and Philly DJ stint!) & always read what @chisag suggests to everyone.   👍  Sometimes it applies to me and sometimes not but it's always worth considering.

I will be OK using that club for my net sessions because I am generally doing hitting drills rather than full swings like on the course.  My drills are usually 3/4 swings emphasizing certain positions or feels.  Right now I am working on shaft lean and compressing the ball during net sessions.  Training my swing to be repeatable & hitting that dime size sweet spot will help me.   It translated to the course pretty well today....76 in very windy conditions.

Working out my short game today and made some notes about my green side bunker play today Alway better at long bunker shots but didn’t feel I had touch for the short ones.
Last time out noticed if I twisted my both my heel and dig in and play the ball middle stance but relate ball  off my back heel I produce very good bunker shot that landed very close to the pin
I notice that if I just walk in and not do any digging I tend to sway forward and my sand shots are not as crisp and tend to be off line on my landing spot

I feel like the motion for me out of the sand is more of a turn off my back heel

Practicing my short putts and now that it acceptable to ground the putter on the line of putt I been doing that and lifting the putter over the ball to start my putt   Like what some players did in the old days like Nick Price   It’s help me see the top of the ball more and lifting putter helps make more of a smooth roll on the ball

so I been grounding my putter 2 feet in front of the ball then stepping back and hovering    I seem to be more consistent with this method than laying the putter on the ground behind the ball to start the motion

Finally made it home last night and had some time to kill waiting on laundry this afternoon. Took out the standard 7-iron and tried to work some more on the wrist angles. I'm still not really getting it the way the coach would like me to. It seems like it should be easy, but my hands just don't want to cooperate that way. Even trying an overexaggerated outside backswing doesn't flatten out my downswing as much as he would like and I am just not having luck holding any kind of bowed wrist.

Played with a couple little feeling things to see how it would affect things overall. Basically came to the conclusion that my brain gets in my way more than anything. I feel like my swing is one or two little breakthroughs from a significant improvement, but it's a major struggle at the moment. It's currently functional, but not living up to potential.

I said last week that I wanted to hit into the net on a near daily basis but man...even with the net in the basement sometimes its just hard to find the time!  But anyway, I managed to make it down there today and run through the bag.  I'm keeping track of the info from the launch monitor and one of the things I've noticed so far is that I'm maddeningly inconsistent; my 3 wood was great today but was terrible last time.  A random assortment of clubs play well one day then another random assortment plays well the next.

My son has a funky club he got from a friend of ours, a TaylorMade R7 3 wood with a 5 wood shaft and all the weights removed from the head.  I took a few hacks with it, and besides the whistling noise from lack of weight, I was really impressed by it.  I really feel like I'm leaving something on the table with the long clubs that I have.  Difficult for me to justify the cost, but I need to keep an eye out for some upgrades this winter!

Personally, I'm not a fan of over exaggerated outside backswing.  Yes, it can help flatten out your swing, but there are other movements that are needed to make that happen.

Without knowing your swing, I can't comment on it.  However, rather than focusing on a bowed lead wrist (flexing), try focusing on extending the trail wrist more.  May not work, but for some people that works better than trying to bow the lead wrist.  Gets you to the same point.

I recommend Monte Scheinblum's Efficient Swing and No Turn Cast videos.  Worth every penny!

The over exaggerated backswing was just a quick little test to see what would happen. I like to experiment with things as a scientist/engineer. In terms of the wrists, I'm naturally left handed, but golf as if I were right handed so my mental connection is much better with my lead wrist than it is with my trail wrist. In my case, it's not really so much that the wrist angles won't hold, it's a different issue that causing the wrists to react that way in order to create something functional. Until I can get that worked out, I will have more of a timing-based swing. If the stars align properly, it works, but everything has to sync up correctly, and I don't have enough time to dedicate solely to golf to keep that natural timing. The coach I've been working with has been great and has me working on some drills that will take some of that inconsistency away, which was my main goal.

Realistically, I have to remember that I basically haven't played in about 13 years. It's going to take some time.

Best of luck!  You can work it out.

If I knew what I know now, back when I started playing golf, I would have started playing left handed.  I think pulling with my dominant arm would have lessened the number of issues I had when I started.

Hit balls into the net for half an hour today - I will let you know if that was enough to help me play okay tomorrow - my last round was November 22nd.  I thought you were supposed to be slowing down work wise at 65. 😞

Made the switch to claw grip for the past month and it’s slowly working out on the course.
Been finding that change of technique is making me prefer more of a single bend or flow neck with mallet

Before I was using the LHL method I gravitated to a plumbers neck. Now those style don’t fit my eye when I m clawing

Just to add I’m more bent over and like the feel of the weight on my toes when I’m rolling the ball

Previously I was too upright and weight on my heels like I was chipping

Went to the range for the first time since getting Covid. I’ve been having the major fatigue for weeks, but I HAD to just get outside. Wow. It was UGLY. I literally couldn’t even swing!!!! Shanks, tops, etc. Wow. Absolutely ZERO energy at all and the legs were completely gone with some pretty bad atrophy. I had JUST played my last 4 rounds in the 70s too!!! Wow. Scary. It’s going to take some time to get back, frustrating because the swing was coming together!!!!

Back to my indoor short game winter sessions. Today just messing around with foam balls and wedges. Focusing on keeping my head locked into the ball and not moving it after contact. I find myself at times in the all facets picking my head up to early from tee to green. contact was a landslide better when I was doing this.

Amazing what it takes out of you. Hope you get back to it. I am just getting back to it about 2 weeks post symptoms. Have not done any golf related things besides the basement wedges. Have found myself at work taking the stairs and being slightly winded which is frightening.

I've been really focusing on my setup this offseason and am realizing the root cause of some of my longstanding issues.

A constant fight for me has been to stop my right shoulder from "coming under" on the downswing. I tend to raise my left shoulder and the right shoulder comes down at the start of the backswing, which leads to a lot of side bend and throws my club path way out right. If my timing is good I hit big draws, but if I'm a little off I end up either shanking it or hitting blocks.

The realization that hit me the other day is that my initial backswing move with my lower body was not doing me any favors. My initial takeaway ended up with me having a slight sway and putting almost all of my pressure onto my trail toes at the top of the backswing. This not only limited my hip and shoulder turn, it caused me to push off my toes at the start of the downswing. That would make me early extend, drop the shoulder, expose the hosel, etc. in order to not come over the top.

A few weeks ago I found I was hitting the ball much better with the feeling of the right heel staying on the ground through impact. And, after cutting a tennis ball in half to emulate the Force Pedals, I found putting them under right trail heel and front toes improved my impact even more. Both the trail heel thought and the DIY Force Pedal had me rotating a little better so that I would get my pressure more evenly spread out on my right foot and not just in the toes.

The biggest difference is felt in hitting chips and pitches. When I'm doing it right on these types of shots, it's a crazy difference.

Feeling really good today. Can't tell you how many practice swings I've taken with a plastic coat hanger on my breaks just to try to cement this feel in.

Greetings from normally muggy miserable , but today 44 degree, windy, drizzly Lexington, SC.  It has been some time since we were not here in high summer June/July/August and I'd forgotten how pleasant it can be when I'm not melting.  😆  My in-laws live on and are members of Lexington CC so my FIL and I took the cart over to the range today and spent a couple hours in the cold (the only two doofuses out there)  BS'ing, talking golf, and hitting my FIL's collection of Mizuno irons.  (MX23 - MX 25 -MX 300 - JPX 850 forged.  Let's just say that it was chilly enough to behoove you to make good contact or you'd spend the next few minutes wringing your hands out even though  it was highly beneficial to be hitting irons as buttery as Mizunos.   I really, really, liked the 850s and they definitely accelerating the push toward Mizunos.

Practice wise I will say that I was presently surprised with my striking ability today.  It was cold, the equipment was different, the flex was wrong for me, but I still made good contact, still was able to put movement on the ball, and had good enough hand control to compensate for the tendency to pull or balloon.  It was a very pleasant surprise as every time I've been out here before I had to really work to even get comfortable with the MX23s.  Progress maybe?  Wedge wise, I may have to sneak the Mizuno 54/6 into my luggage.

Be fun to see how I play when we go out in the next couple of days.

Hit through the bag into the net today.  Very frustrating.  Didn't really have good consistent contact and my distances were generally horrendous as a result.  One odd thing I noticed was that club head speed increased on my hybrids and woods.  Contact still wasn't terribly consistent or great but I would assume (hope?) that the increase in club speed is still a positive development.

Over the weekend my son and I had the opportunity to demo a Sim2 7 iron at Golf Galaxy.  It was pretty awesome.  Added a good 20-30 yards to the 7I distance of my current club, and all my shots were really nice looking baby fades.  Small sample size, but that experience really has me trying to cost-justify a new set of irons!

SIL lives in Lexington.  Last time we visited her it was during a cold spell.  Hope it warms up for you, nice area.

Yes it is.  I thoroughly enjoy visiting -- even when it's hot.  I may be a little biased by the CC in the back yard.

When I retired we looked at that area carefully because of SIL but I wanted a little more warmth in winter.  Was definitely in our top 3 with FL and Myrtle Beach.

At the driving range and practicing lateral step drills. Getting my timing and rhythm

Not so much a step as it is a lateral hop and squat for me.  Feeling like I can generate my speed that way.  For my driver it feel like the my right leg loads up the static pressure from just allowing my heavy head to center over my right leg and then in transition my left foot applies active pressure to drive my upper body and club to create the “swoosh”

I use to have a bad habit of kicking my right leg to the target in transition but I lose speed that way   I get more out of my driver if I just allow my left leg to use the ground pressures then turn my hips rather than activate my right foot and right hip too early

Here's my typical routine which was followed today.  I have joined an indoor range for the snowy off season here in New England.

1. (5 min) Set up SkyTrak and pair with my iPhone.  Turn on the Video capture system.

2. (10 min) chips.  I also use this time to align the SkyTrak manually.  Many SkyTraks including mine require it to be rotated in order to record straight shots as straight shots (I should do a post on that).  Mine needs to be rotated counterclockwise about 2 deg.  To make sure of the alignment, I put a ball mark about 10 yards in front of me and chip to it.  It straight chips read straight, I'm good to go.

3.  Warm-up. (5 min)

4.  Speed Training (20 min) Today's practice included Super Swing Speed training, this was the 1st session of week 2 - Level 1.  I got some weird looks from people during my left-handed swings.

5.  Short Game (~40 min) I hit total of 60 shots using my 54 and 58.   Target carries were 15yds (LW), 45 yds (SW), 55 yds (SW), 60 yds (LW), 67 yds (SW) & 75 yds (LW).   I have 20 different short game shots I practice.  (chips, pitches, partial wedges).  I usually pick 6 - 8 of them for each practice.

6.  Full shots (~40 min) I hit 10 each of AW, 7 iron, 4 hybrid and three different shafts with my driver - total of 60 shots.  I'm hitting so many drives as I'm trying to decide between 3 shafts.   I'll gather at least 100 shots with each shaft and look at the SkyTrak data before deciding.  Hopefully before the end of the year.

The whole thing took a little less than 2 hours.  My practices are about 1 1/2 hours long, but speed training has added to that.

My distances have been totally wacky (club longer or more) since the speed training.  I'm also tending to pull my irons, which wasn't a problem before.  Average yds and side angle has changed from 156 (3.4 deg right) to 170 (-0.5 deg) for 7 iron. My launch angle and height have shot up as well.  I'm hitting everything longer, higher and with more spin. But, dispersion has also increased quite a bit.  Hopefully, I can figure out how to control the newfound speed.  What's odd is that the gain came after the first session and it never went away even on days I don't do speed training.  That's usually not supposed to happen until several weeks into the program.   I hope it sticks around.

[Addendum]

Speed training also affected my pitch and partial wedge distance.  They are out of whack!  I hope my putting distances don't have to be recalibrated !!

We hit mid 50's today!  After finishing tire rotation and taking one to get a plug I dragged out the mat and hit about 75 wedge shots.  After a choppy first batch of 15 where only about 1/2 landed in the target zone I was a steady 12 / 15 at least in the next 4 batches.  It has been a few weeks since playing it was fun to swing again.

Then I moved on to putting using some new techniques I've been practicing inside on the 4' rule.  The speed and face angle control felt good.  I need to get to the course and work on speed control and lag putting using the new stroke to see how it works on real grass with different slopes.

Just some swing path and face control. Short yardage stuff to start. A lot better than it used to be, this drill was a struggle in the past.
