What/How Did You Practice Today?

Frustrating and very windy day at the range. I set up alignment sticks for aim and ball position. I only hit 8 iron once I warmed up, so that way it’s just working on some consistency. My ball striking is as good as I’ve ever had, but my path is insanely left( right handed player). This is causing very weak slices. I worked on gate drills, but I have to really align right and almost hit pulls to get it to go straight. I finished with like ~30 balls of half swings, trying anything to find something to work. A few months ago I was playing the best golf of my life, and now I feel like I’m at my worst. That’s golf though, so I’ll keep working and get it figured out.

Range and putting green were full, so spent  my practice time today hitting 15-20 yard pitch shots to the pitching green off tight lies... using the bounce!

Do you find this club to be weirdly fun to use like I do?

I've got the 58/11 and love its overall versatility. I had a similar practice session with it yesterday but was just painting different shots all around the green and I almost couldn't stop because I was having so much fun.

Much better range day today, not as good as I want to be, but better than I have in a few weeks. I had alignment sticks down, and I stood a little closer to the ball which allowed me to get my backswing more up and out, my killer is an inside takeaway. This really helped me shallow and not slice, I still am working on getting a better release but this was a much better day today. Progress.

Yes, I love my 60.  The 54/14 is also nice, but I use the 60 a lot more.  The 54 doesn't have the chrome worn off; I only use it for longer greenside bunker shots and thick rough.  I use the 60 for everything around the green.  It took some getting used to, but I enjoy practicing all kinds of shots with it.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Sporadic day at the range today. Started off with decent warmup and moved to the wedges, working on hitting different distances with each wedge. Finally got a chance to hit the Stealth and can't say that I was blown away by it at this point. It seemed to be slightly more forgiving than what I currently have, but so was the Rogue ST. Definitely noticed that I have some work to do to get comfortable with driver. For whatever reason, it feels like an entirely different swing. That may be the next video that I send to Jayson because I feel like my iron swing is most of the way there.

After spraying some drivers around I went back to mid-irons and worked on some feels and drills for my swing. Got things squared away as best I could. Unfortunately, today was one of those days when parts of my body just didn't want to be involved in the swing, mainly my legs. They were recovering from the gym earlier this week. Even though it wasn't my best ball striking by any measure, I can at least walk away with the feeling that I was able to recognize the issue and work through it to find something that would have been playable. I have to get used to accepting that I'm not always going to have my best game, but I can adjust to utilize whatever game I have on that day. In the past, I've definitely been the type that would pretty much pack it in on those tough days, now I feel like I'm getting closer to the point where a bad day can still be enjoyable.

Was short on time, but got out to the range on Wednesday.  Mostly to try and get my swing under control.  Thinking back to my rounds last week, it was mostly a slice with driver, but irons had a bit of a two way miss going.  I just need more reps and try to hone my tempo back to where it was at the end of the year.

Hopefully I can get 3/4 range sessions before I have another outing and possibly play a casual round.  I think my swing is still ok, but just need to get my confidence back up and know where my tendencies will be.

Went to the range today and solely focused on the driver and had a realization … discovered my wrist are cupped quite a bit at the top of my back swing.

Focused on having a flatter wrist, smoother tempo and, oddly, a more upright backswing and what do you know … straight, baby fades! 🤯

Honestly, cannot begin to tell you how freakin happy I am.

Awesome.  The joys of mid-capping... grinding away to find those subtle adjustments that might finally put a consistent single digit swing within your grasp.  😄

I've recently started taking 25 foam balls out in the front yard and hit my 60°, PW, or 9 across my yard to where I stuck a little utility locator flag. I try to do this twice a day to get up from my desk and move, get some fresh air, and maybe improve my game. It's at least not starting into monitors all day.

Golf. Today's practice can best be described as, "what in the (insert every possible expletive here) was that?" I can't even really describe what was going on for the first 45 minutes. Everything just felt off in the transition leading to all sorts of mishits. Finally decided to take some video to send for help because I was so frustrated.

Once that was done I was just about ready to pack it up and decided to hit a few hybrids just to see how far they would spray all over the range. Without even thinking about the mechanics of the swing just stepped up and striped it. Then again, and again, and again. No idea what happened. Felt like my brain just completely got in the way for the first 45 minutes. Hit randomly through the bag after that for another 35 shots or so and hit everything well. Took some additional video to look at and compare the differences between the terrible contact and things working. Either way I have video to send and I have a feeling that I need to keep working on with the shoulders in transition.

Wedges -

Threw mine into the car and worked on them for 45 minutes - I had big problems with them in yesterdays round. Hit full shots, part shots, chips, pitches and a few from the sand.

It’s interesting to me that when I’m hitting my other clubs well I starting hitting my wedges fat. I seem to have found something so we shall see tomorrow.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Really glad I decided to film my swing today because it would have been very frustrating otherwise.  I've been hammering away at making some adjustments for the last couple weeks,  which has been going pretty well.  It's all been on mats while they repair the grass area and I've felt like my contact was a bit heavy.  I didn't know how heavy until we got back on the grass...  I was digging trenches.   It felt unfolded and I almost panicked, but through the camera I could see that I was mostly doing what I was supposed to be doing.  My timing was just a bit off.  I worked through some drills to clean that up and ended the session feeling pretty good.  I'm going to take a breather from full swings for a week and let that memory set.  Plus with all the swing work ove been doing, I've neglected my wedges and putter. No bueno for an upcoming tournament if I don't put some time in with them.

Curious why you would take a break from full swing work and let a memory set instead of working on that feeling and building the motor skills of that feeling?

I get wanting to work on putter and wedge game but done correctly one can work on all aspects of the game

Mostly the body telling me to give it a breather.  I've been grinding away at these adjustments almost every other day since a lesson in earlier in April and the over the last couple range sessions it's felt like I was swinging tired.  I'll give myself a break until later next week while I focus on putting and short game.

Again you can rest your body from all the full swings and work on your short game at the same time.

It takes thousands of swings to master a move. Getting away from that will probably lead to regression a bit and when you start back up you may be in the same place or potentially a little worse off.

Instead of taking a week off or instead of every other day on full swings. Go one day with some drill work on the stuff from your lesson and spend the rest of the time you normally would practice on short game. Then the next time add in some full swings with the drill work and finish with short game. Then the next session go 50/50.

Been slowly getting back into golf shape following the minor car accident that sidelined me. Have really been working on dialing my stock shot shape back in while still being able to play the fade when I need to. Had a nice 2-under round going before the wheels came off but it was great to be back out there. Fatigue set in and I couldn't hit the shots I wanted to but man, the putter is still on fire.

Also got out to the range Sunday morning to try out my new Cobra Big Tour 3 Wood and that thing is a rocket launcher. I found it surprisingly easy to launch off the deck and it goes higher than I expected but still carries out almost to driver distances. Hoping to get on a launch monitor Thursday to get some numbers with it and figure out where it fits in my bag.

I have to admit I love having access to a GCQuad.  I know a lot of people say that just seeing the ball flight is good enough but being able to see my actual path information has been valuable.    One if the issues that my last coach identified was that my path was too in-to-out (6*+) so I have been making a conscious effort to fix that.  Some tweaks to the backswing direction and length seem to be putting me in a better position resulting in about a 3* in-to-out path with a more open face resulting in center to slight heel strikes instead if toe strokes, pull hooks, and fat shots.  My shots during most wanted testing have been significantly better and the best thing is that the changes are providing better results on the course.

I would totally agree that personally having the numbers from a GC Quad (and knowing how to interpret them all) would be a dream. To really understand if that new move I am trying is really helping make things more consistent or just something I am feeling.

I spent a little time out in the back yard with some whiffle balls working on external focus instead of getting caught up in the minutia of the swing. I was just focusing on a spot on our in front of the ball and just hitting it. Hit a couple thin, I think from worrying about hitting a rock (we live close to a quarry), but only one of the shanks that have become a plague to my game.

Hopefully I'll be able to get out sometime in the next three days and be able to play or at least practice.

Putting - Went to the course and spent about 1 1/2 hours working on building some feels with the LAB putter.   I was going through my full routine with all the putts (as I should) and using 1 ball.  Dropped a ball, made a read, and holed out the putt.   By the end of my session I felt pretty good about how I was rolling the ball.

Chipping practice. Nothing but chipping today since it was a bit of a mixed bag of success last time out. I get a little handsy and contact can be inconsistent. I've typically always had pretty good feel in other sports, but the problem with having good feel is knowing that you can hit shots even with flawed technique sometimes. Makes for impressive shots and some equally impressive failures. I'm trying to simplify everything to decrease the number of misses. Spent the time hitting from different areas just focusing on hitting a landing spot with different clubs. Just going to a very basic approach and hitting quality shots.

Touched a club for the first time in a month and it was ugly. I’m so steep it’s disgusting!  Hit a full bucket and tried a ton of different drills to try and get rid of the move, but to no avail. Ugh. Why does it have to be SO easy to lose a swing?! Not happy.

Did some putting practice last evening to reinforce the set up, tempo and head position.

I was going to do some wedge practice too but was too sore.   Too much shovel work from moving plants around from one hole to another earlier in the day and gardening is not even my hobby!  😲
