What/How Did You Practice Today?

Another productive and confidence building practice sesh!

Start with some putting (knocking everything way past the targets...); then on to some chipping and pitching, some full-ish and full swings, some more chipping and pitching, then back for some more putting (better speed control this time).

There didn't seem to be any golfers coming up #9 so walked over to #10 with my practice set - 4H, old 8i and 4 wedges (all different 🤷‍♂️) in a lightweight carry bag. Then to #18 with its tee box right behind the #10 green, and then over to #1 and #2 (which loops back towards the parking lot).

Played one tee shot - not all great but all playable - and two approach shots - and either hit the intended layup or hit onto the green .. from about 130 and in .. except for my first try on #1 (wasn't wearing my GPS watch) which went a little long and ended up in the rough past the green.

All in all happy with most of the ball striking, and most of the putting; trying to focus on one shot at a time while trying to apply the good stuff from my lessons 👍

Oh, and also wondering why I don't play a full round with a limited set more often!!?? Heck may even drop two of the wedges!

Since I have been working on my iron swing a lot, I have been neglecting my chipping/pitching.  Today I went to the course with the idea of spending most of my time on the short game.  The putting greens was full of people and the range was wide open, so I started there with some 7i and driver shots... better results than all of last weekend!  Not sure why.

The putting green finally emptied as players went to the first tee, so I headed there and chipped for about 30 minutes; crappy, really crappy!!  What was killing me on the course, killed me during practice; chunk... then thin.  Just not making good contact.  For some reason I seemed to have moved my weight from forward on my front foot to middle of my stance.  That's no good.

I started to get a little better when people showed up again to putt before their tee time, so I switched to my putting practice.  That was solid.  Right-hand only putting was great which shows good face control.  Good speed control on 10-20 footers.  Our putting greens is basically flat with not much break on the green from any direction.  I wish it had some slope on it that allowed practice on R-L and L-R.  Those are the putts that can kill my round; not putts with wrong speed.

Finished up with 30 yard pitch shots varying shot trajectory alternating from a front pin to a back pin with my 60º.  No issues there.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Went to the range today and really worked on mid to short irons 7 iron to wedges. Focusing on shortening my swing, ball position and alignment. I’ve also started hitting more of a draw vs a fade which isn’t bad I just need to be prepared to play it. Spend about 20-30 minutes finishing with putting practice. Face and alignment. I have a one way kiss where I tend to miss everything right. Working on getting my eyes over the club more and my club alignment for more of a center strike vs outer strike which my eyes to to allude to me is centered.

Hit the range yesterday for two buckets and 45 minutes on the putting green. I was working primarily on 8 iron down for distance control and different shots to simulate windy conditions. I hit a few drivers but arccos showed me I lose most strokes 150 and in so I worked on 165 and in for the whole time. Putting has turned into a strength and I did a drill of trying to get to 21 putts in a row from 4-5 feet, I was not successful but did get close. I noticed it was mainly concentration on why I would miss. Did some lag putts and ended with a few 20 footers until I sunk one to go home on a high note. I hope it translates to Thursday tourney and Saturday match.

Some chipping and putting this morning, pretty solid practice session.  Doing practice at 7am before the sun is out and its Hella Hot.. best option evah. Need to do that more often.

If only  I could fit in 9 holes before 8:30am that would be great..

I'm not one to be doling out swing tips, buuuut .. I will share one thing that's helped me -- set up, take your stance, then .. move your trail foot straight back only like ½" and lift the heel slightly ... this will encourage a bit of forward lean with the body / weight onto the front foot.

I do it on the course a lot to remind myself "weight forward / ball first".

Got out to the range today, irons were great but I’m still struggling at swinging freely with the driver. My swing speed during practice swings will be at/around 107, whereas once behind the ball, it drops to below 100.

Had just one swing behind the ball at 103, and it read 267 carry. Didn’t grab a photo at the time for I wanted to keep the momentum going, but I couldn’t get it back over 100 again. Below was my last swing … and TBH, they were all in the middle of the range with a slight fade, so I’ll take it.

But still, need to get past the mental block of getting after it.

It is really hard to swing full speed and not worry about where the ball is going to feel that speed while hitting a ball. I know it was a struggle for myself as well until I started some Super Speed training and then it got a bit easier. Keep trying the speed will come, and then its bombs away

Appreciate it. I’m doing their training program as well, but I’ll admit, it’s been off and on, didn’t do much of it during the winter, and I’m at Level 2 now.

But it was their comments on how their program help trains your brain to know that you can swing harder.

Like life, golf is a grind … gotta keep chipping away.

I bought this used through a golfing buddy that purchased the SkyTrak for his garage. And honestly, I really do like it ... no regrets in buying it from him.

Its has simple, straight-fwd data and its main purpose/focus is the Smash Factor data. It's relatively spot-on with its data output compared to that of the SkyTrak.

Hahahaha. I checked the wind numbers, 7 MPH helping wind with gusts up to 20 MPH. I wasn't pin high with all of them, and several came up a good 10 yards short. Not to mention the range balls don't spin a bit which sometimes make them act like flier lies. I probably would be insane to try to hit a 9 iron 170+ on the course.

In all seriousness though, my contact got so much better with the aggressive/acceleration focus. Pretty sure @chisag was talking about deceleration chunks the other day and that's what got me thinking about it. When I get too timid on the downswing I just don't hit the ball very well. And it happens all too often on the course.

It is a great drill, I have always felt that when I take a shorter back swing and then try to get to max speed, the contact is great. Personally trying to do something similar even with my full swing. I can tend to have the arms overrun and get too long. Taking a shorter back swing with a bit better width is just as fast but so much more consistent. Maybe not John Rahm short but that's the feel.

Really got after it today in the range and the putting green.  Focused on practicing from 165 yards and in. I started with alternating touch shots to the 45 and 65 yard markers with my 54 and 58 wedges. Then moved to hitting my gap wedge. Working on distance and flight. I had the idea of 3/4 to 1/2 swings the whole session. Proper alignment to the target and my ball position with club head/ eliminating forward shaft lean which I think was contributing to me pulling and hitting a lot of pull draws. Didn’t even bother to hit driver at the range because I’ve been in such a groove with the club. Then I moved to the putting green, practicing my alignment with the putter head to my target. Really got my eyes over the club and was able to see I’ve been setting up my putter a touch outside of center strike which I think contributed to having a dominant right miss. Went out to play a practice 9. I eliminated really any over swings or pull draws. My iron and wedge shots were in target and at worst were thinned probably from my getting a touch quick out of my backswing. Putting was better than it has been but still need more practice to get used to the changes I’m making. I ended up shooting a 40. Missing 2 putts that I feel were make-able from about 10-12 feet

I've gotten out the last couple of evenings and worked on hitting whiffle balls with the focus being on setting the club down and swinging within a couple of seconds after settling the club behind the ball. The way I've been playing the last couple of months has caused me to freeze too long over the ball. Good progress so far!

Got out to the range tonight for a maintenance session - alignment sticks showed me I've been lining my body up significantly open. Tweaked that back to neutral and was striking the ball well. It's funny how sometimes it's the smallest, simplest things that can make everything go sideways!

I got out to the range this morning and hit a small bucket almost exclusively focusing on wedges. My short game is completely non-existent at this point in the season so I spent a lot of time with my 54* and 58* hitting to various targets and putting the ball forward and backward in my stance to affect trajectory. I had more bladed shots than I wanted, but the ones I hit cleanly were right on target.

Finished up with some 7i shots mixed in with HyWood off the deck and a couple of drivers. Had the fade going today but everything would have been from center to just barely off the fairway based on where I was aiming. I didn't get a chance to get to the short game area due to a men's league getting ready for their morning tee times, so I'll try and get back in a few days for some greenside work.

I recall a story about some Tour pro - he'd win a tournament without any warmup / practice so decided to do the same thing the next week .. where he did really poorly...

He said something to the effect of: "You don't own your swing, you only rent it!"

Got out to the range on Wednesday and had a great session that was mostly focused on getting some video comparison of the Modus 115s from 7I up in comparison to TT Elevate tours.  My swing felt great, mostly I think because of the warmup routine I've developed.  I spend about a 1/3 of the bucket going through a sequence that helps me find my low point, tempo, connection & turn, and trail elbow position in downswing.  It's been really successful both from finding feels and for calming my mind before I do anything serious.  After warmup I took the video for the comparison, which I got through fairly quickly, then jumped into a few shallowing drills before taking a little more video with full swings.  I was very pleasantly surprised when I looked at video at home.  I finally feel like my swing is starting to get repeatable with decent body position.  It's only taken six months of practice and five lessons to get away from OTT.  😉

More practice on and around the greens today at my local course.  The only bad thing about it is the greens are extremely slow so when I go play my league round later this week, the greens are very fast so I'll need to adjust big time.  Chipping and putting are getting back to form and I'll get to league an hour or two early and hit the range to warm up the irons and woods.  High expectations for this coming round....or is it expecting a high round ? LOL either way I'm going to bring it!

Went out to the range yesterday and worked on something I haven’t worked on in a long time. I practiced my ritual of setting up for my ball on the mat as if it were on the tee box or fairway. The result was that I was more consistent sending the ball where I was aiming it, and where it show up the most was with my 3-wood, and 5-iron—two clubs I often struggle with on the course these days.
