What/How Did You Practice Today?

null

Recommended Posts

Range session today to keep working on the same things. Timing the weight transfer, using the legs more, tempo. Trying to get in some solid range sessions this week before I travel next week for work. No reason to bring my clubs on this trip because of the timing, so I won't be hitting anything for a week. Then have a Mizuno fitting scheduled for the next weekend.

My practice is basically down to hitting 3 or 4 easy punch type shots only getting to around left arm parallel. Follow that with a regular swing. I'm seeing that I shift the weight in a better sequence on the little punch shots and that helps me keep from flipping the hands. Now it's working on transferring those movements to the full swing. Overall, solid range session.

After exchanging videos, written  messages and voice messages all summer long, I finally had a live video/zoom call with my Skillest coach. Went over the video I shot from earlier and talked through what I’m feeling, what’s working, what’s not and a new drill to incorporate.  Off the course I’m going to work on keeping my pelvis/hips still through P2. I tend to really wind up with my hips - almost two much mobility - and that leads to pulling the club too far inside. So preset with heel pressure in trail foot, engaging core and now a still lower body using my shoulders to start the backswing thru P2.

starting to come up with an indoor winter practice plan.

Spent nearly an hour hitting the Lagshot into the net trying out different "feels" and how it relates to contact.  Things like moving my arm like this, or shifting my weight like that.  It's a good reinforcement of the idea that you generally can't make too many changes at once.  But feeling the cause and effect of different tweaks is helping me understand my overall swing a little better.

Hope you get the lesson in.  It’s been a tough month.

Rained out again!  Four weeks in a row.  Unbelievable.

It did let up enough for me to set the net up and hack away at a few in the backyard for about 20 minutes.  I actually didn't hack away at all - I'm hitting them well - all of our weather stations are seeing we will be in a drier pattern next week - finally!  That's if the tropical storm hitting Puerto Rico doesn't do something stupid.

Owen and I are playing a scramble tomorrow with our friends Paul and Mark so we decided to get together at the range and work out various things.

Paul's driver is abysmal and was a focal point.  Still a work in progress, but he absolutely uncorked one that was better than anything the rest of us hit.  He can't quite get everything sequenced consistently but it's a marathon, right?

Mark and Owen are a little better and were able to fine-tune; Owen was able to get his driver back on point.

I was thrilled with my session.  I'd been struggling a little with hand placement on my driver but feel like I'm back on track.  I also adjusted the hosel a bit and am happy with what I see.  Irons and wedges were another focal point.  I was able to get better aligned and drop some darts.  Long irons weren't great but getting better.

On the other hand, I think I've determined that I have like four 200 yard clubs, lol.  Going to need to make some decisions this off-season.

Golf gives and takes away. After a couple really good practice sessions, yesterday was absolutely terrible. The range was all torn up and I just couldn't seem to get it together. Out of the 50 or so balls I hit, I can count on one hand the number of shots that felt good. Things were just off. I think it was largely related to pushing a little too hard at the gym earlier in the afternoon. My lower back was feeling it a bit from the deadlifts. Went over to the chipping area and just worked on chipping and pitching to avoid getting too much into my own head. I feel like my swing has gotten to a point where it is solid enough, so I don't want to go trying to make corrections on a bad day and screw up the other things I've been working on. Honestly spending more time in the short game area is where I should be anyway.

Set up the net this afternoon to hit some balls before I put the clubs away while I'm traveling for work starting tomorrow. Still a little sore in the lower back and a little off as a result, but much better than yesterday. Ended the session hitting a few balls with the club that has been giving me some trouble recently, the 18 degree hybrid. First couple were pretty bad. I've been thinking that my hybrids have felt too long recently, so I choked up about an inch and suddenly I was ripping it. Now to let things settle while I'm in Florida for a week away from golf.

I started my practice with pitch shots, really trying to dial my 40-75 yard shots with either my 60/56. Then moved into my pitching wedge and hit about 30 shots to a 130 yard pin/ green complex. I was working on my fades and draws, then some partial shots, I even got the pole a couple times. My irons and wedges have never been as good, and with hitting 14 greens yesterday it is really starting to show. Then I moved to my driver, and I’m really trying to hit fades, I didn’t hit many fairways because I wanted to play a fade, but like yesterday it just stayed straight or fell to the left. I can get it to move 15 yards to the right but I don’t like it, or I hit it out of the heel and I don’t like the distance loss or shape of either of those options. So I stopped fighting it and just hit high draws, I don’t think with my current driver setup I can hit a rotated strong fade. I know it sounds ridiculous that I’m disappointed with a high draw, but I don’t like the big miss with draw. For now I’ll take what I have and keep working. Then I finished up with some much needed putting. I worked on my lag putting and 3 and 6 foot putts.

I have picked up my Lagshot again recently as well (7i).  It is a good warmup club for me at the range... 10 swings ramping up to full swing speed (making sure the timing on the ultra flexy shaft is good for reasonable ball flight for at least the last 5 swings) before putting it away and finishing my pre-round routine with a few irons and drivers.  I plan to get to the range for a dedicated session using the Lagshot Driver this week.

Not sure if you can do this with your version of the ZX7 to promote a fade or maybe minimize the big left miss, but can you try adding weight to the toe area by changing out the weights on the driver?  Put a lighter weight on heel side and heavier on toe side to keep overall swingweight and feel the same.  Or if you have a single weight set up, by using a lighter weight and adding lead tape to the toe?

It has a two weight heel and toe setup. I have the heavier weight on the toe side. I’ve tried adding lead tape, but it messes with the sw and it’s always falling off. I looked at the hosel adjustment chart, it’s kind of confusing but I am going to try opening the face and make it flatter. Maybe that will help

There have been times in warm weather  i had the heel weight off my driver and added extra toe weight.  Cold weather golf with a less flexible swing has me moving most of the weight to the heel slot.

How do you feel about the driver?  I like the 7 and I assume because it's longer the driver might be even better.  Trying to justify the purchase to myself.

Um, so I spent way too much time at Top Golf in Hillsboro today.  Not a good choice of a place to practice as I have a membership much closer to home where I get free balls after twilight hours.  However, I had reason to be in the area (45 minutes from home) and had to hit while the irons could be hot.  And it's a fun place to try things out with the tracking.

While I spent too much time and $$ there, I got a few things figured out.  I have a much better feel on my short irons and know why I hit left when I have a good full swing.  I was hitting better on target at the end.  It did take me about 2.5 hours to get there.

Also I have much more confidence with driver.  I may put it into play next weekend (3:30 at Glendoveer if anyone local wants to join). I have been keeping this one out of my game for a few months because I couldn't be confident, but after today I think it's likely a good choice to go back.  I can get a good shot at target much farther out than my next biggest club.  I honestly was doing better with D than with the 6.  That shouldn't jive, but it was today.

I bought the full set last fall... driver, 7 iron and pw.  I use the 7 iron the most of all three - the driver 2nd most.  I like it... as much as anything it helps me from getting too fast at the top... so when I'm struggling leaving my tee shots to the right, or too much left to right movement - I take it to the range... plus the weight is a good warm up club (similar to the 7 iron).  My honest opinion is that it doesn't help with swing path issues (I have a tendency to go outside in with a bit of an over the top move at the transition in my swing... and I can still time the lag shot with that flaw)... but overall... I'm not mad at it.

Took advantage a lull in work post vacation to get some practice in before the club championship this weekend.  With nothing to do I a nice long session in.  Spent an hour chipping focused on situations I typically see on course working my way down from the 58 to bump and runs with the 7 iron.  Everything felt solid and I'm very confident inside 25 yards and middling confident from 25-50.  I finished off with 15 minutes in the sand.  I'm probably not going to hole anything out of the sand but I shouldn't be hurting myself either.

From there I went over to the putting green for an hour focusing on my stroke from 3-5 feet, my line from 12-15 feet, and my speed from 30+ feet.  I was a little worried because they micro-punched the greens in the last week and I wasn't sure how well they'd be rolling for this weekend.  Turns out no need to worry.  Nice and smooth and surprisingly fast.  I'm going to get another session in tomorrow focused solely on lag to get a feel for the speed.

Last I spent an hour on the range.  Drills for the first 30 balls, driver for 20, then the remainder on my new (to me) 4 hybrid in comparison to my 3 iron.  As much as I love the 3 Iron (A pure strike with it is a borderline religious experience) the 4 hybrid (same loft) is so much easier to hit consistently to the distance I need it for so sadly the 3 iron is out of the bag for the weekend.

It was so nice to practice without any constraints on time.  I got everything accomplished that I wanted to and am feeling mentally solid about my swing and game for the weekend.  Going to go again tomorrow to see about dialing my 25-65 wedge game in a bit more and dialing in on the speed of the greens.

I spent an hour on 45 & 65 yard wedge shots with the 54* today.  I took the 57* out of the bag to add the 4i so the 54 has to expand its range.  It was working ok after about 20 shots at each distance to dial in the necessary swing length.

I'm impressed!  3 hours and 15 minutes practicing!!  I can only last about 2 hours when I practice.  1/2 of a medium bucket on the range; the other half to the pitching green from various lies and bunker shots. That takes about an hour, and then finish with chips to the putting green and putting for an hour.

Some of that time is taking 5 minute breaks when I start to lose focus.

Learned some new things to practice for my iron game and driver courtesy of the PGA Teaching Professionals at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY today.  They hosted a golf clinic for 14 PGA HOPE Graduates, the program they run for Veterans that I was fortunate to be included in.

First was chipping and focus was on swing long enough to have the clubhead at a constant speed at ball contact instead of accelerating (speeding up or slowing down).  Then was driving range where after a demonstration of a right handed draw I had them coach me on an on-demand draw that not only accomplished that but also corrected my general setup, and that was not just for my selected 5i but also driver.

Last was a putting competition for closest to a line, but the L.A.B. Golf DF2.1 attracted great interest and all the Pros had a go at rolling some putts and were quite impressed.  My distraction of the social aspect of the event kept me from rolling a well paced putt on an aerated and fast Tour ready green but it's golf so I wasn't phased to be out of contention on first putt.  (First photo we are on the putting green.  Second photo is a 180* panorama and the building was only slightly angled behind me - I was standing on the brick walk visible on both sides of the photo)

The real trick is to apply what was learned today in my next round tomorrow on my home muni course.

Got another couple hours in this morning.  😉  First stop was a nearby course that has a longer chipping area with a worse green so I could work on the 25-65 yard shots.  Worked my way in and out from 30-60 yards alternating with my 52 & 58.  My distance dispersion was surprisingly tight across the board, left right dispersion was not as good but was reasonable enough that I'm confident that  I'll have a decent chance at one putting for the majority of the shots.  I got a really great compliment from a guy that was just hanging out before his round.  Told me I have a great chipping stroke and that my dispersion pattern was excellent.  It was a really nice boost to my mental confidence.

Hopped back in the car and drove the 10 minutes to my home course to do some lag putting.  I hit 40 putts from between 50 & 65 feet and most (but not all) of them ended up within a 4' circle.  I finished them off and two putted 33 of them.  Pretty solid for me from that distance.

Hit the range one more time with a small bucket.  I fiddled with my Driver, 3W, & hybrids last night.  Bumped them up to borderline weird swing weight territory (D7-8 after having them at D5-6) after feeling like I was having a hard time figuring out where the head was in downswing.  Hitting them today it didn't feel or look like I sacrificed any head speed and they felt much, much, more stable.

Who knows really, but I'm feeling dialed (as dialed as an 11 can be) headed into the club championship.  We'll see.

So finally had my lesson after four weeks of rainouts.  I really like this new teacher and will go after to the lessons session to post a lot more about the lesson.  Bottom line I'm totally past the new glasses issue.  I was hitting 7 iron after 7 iron after 7 iron, high and straight, high and baby draw, high and fade on demand  - By the end of the lesson I could hit a high 1 yard draw or a high 1 yard fade nearly every time I tried - My teacher said, "it's easy to see from your swing live and on video that you were once a very good golfer and are still a pretty good one. You aren't very far from very good again if you want to be. "

It was a lot of fun to hit balls on the range today is all I'm saying. 🙂  I can't wait to get out and do it again tomorrow.  I can't wait to start playing again either.  Sadly it looks like a tropical storm/hurricane is going to disrupt that.  😞

Being pretty busy in Florida for work, I didn't even bother to bring my clubs. Figured I wouldn't have time to play. I did bring my putter with me because it was luckily short enough to fit in my suitcase. I ended up spending 20-30 minutes each night putting around the various hotel rooms, finally dedicating myself to get used to the claw grip. Turns out having an actual, consistent preshot routine is helpful? Who would have guessed that?

Long story short, I got comfortable with the claw grip but didn't like the way my current club felt after awhile. I'm not 20 anymore and using a 33" putter is just not comfortable these days for my back. Went to my fitting earlier before my flight back home and found a new club to replace it. Every time I go in looking at putters I want to like a blade, and today I walked out having ordered a larger than I already had mallet. I'm pretty excited about having a full fitted bag on order. Would never have guessed a few of the options that worked, so definitely glad I spent the time to get a proper fitting.

Very windy/cold but excellent range session. I think the best all season.  I saw this video from Monte Scheinblum on Instagram the other day and it really clicked for me: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci5VWrbJ4BV/

To summarize, his suggested downswing feel is to point the butt of the club at 3 o'clock (9 o'clock for lefties) on the downswing without dropping your trail shoulder.

My No. 1 swing fault my coach has been harping on me about is that I shallow the club by dropping the trail shoulder and spinning my shoulders. This gets me coming way too inside-out, and leads to massive hooks when I'm off. I've tried several things, including feeling my hands coming more left to start the downswing, but nothing really seems to have helped. I still tend to drop the right shoulder and spin.

For whatever reason (opposing forces, perhaps), trying to feel the butt pointing at 3 o'clock got me hitting nice straight/tiny draws with the four clubs I brought to the range. Absolutely beautiful. The guy next to me even commented on me just hitting 5 iron after 5 iron straight, high and long.

Something to continue to work on as I move into the offseason. Really felt good today.

... You probably are aware of this but just in case and for others reading this, drills and exercises designed to address flaws will almost always cease to work and even cause problems if you stick with them. This excellent drill is designed to stop several flaws and swinging to 3 with the butt is a great start. But sooner or later a better player will start to over do it and then you may need to change to 2 and as you progress to 1 where it should end up. Eventually the goal is to stop using the drill all together and just swing but of course it is a process. I also love Monte saying it is about "feel and not real" and truthfully so is the majority of what we do with our game. Like Speith coming over the top with his practice swing that is feel and not real once he actually hits a shot.

This last 6 months of practicing just chipping (with 60/56 Wedges) and then practicing putting from 3-5 feet. Has paid off significantly.  I'm to the point now that if I missed a green (which I normally do), the confidence that I will either chipped in or get it close.  And then putting, the fact that if you chipped to that range of 3-5 feet that you will make that putt is such a stress free environment. Specially since off the tee is not an issue, fairway finder 71% of the time.

Next is to find a routing for my 8-7-6 irons, need to find the same consistency I have found in my short game, it will be amazing if I can get that GIR average 20-30% to up to 40-50%  would be a monumental improvement.

Oh most definitely. I like the feeling for now, especially on the range, because it's the polar opposite of my "stock" swing/flaw where the trail shoulder drops and I fly open, pulling the butt more toward 11 o'clock than anything else. Eventually I'll probably swing too much to the other direction and have to reign it in. 😀

... Nice. I hear so many talk about a drill or feel they had at the range or for several rounds that worked great and then it just "stopped working". But as you stated so well "Eventually I'll probably swing too much to the other direction and have to reign it in." But until then, ya ride it til it bucks you!

Spent some time in the basement hitting a few different clubs into the net and trying different feels, positions, and tempos.  Fascinating to me how these changes affect different clubs in different ways.  Not always sure how to process that information but it does make for a lot of mental notes.
