What/How Did You Practice Today?

I'll get some of the top tracer data up a little later, but spent some time on the irons today and wow. Found a small change that made a world of a difference and was flushing irons effortlessly. I am going to go back again tomorrow and see if the same feeling yields the same results, but my oh my am I a happy man now!

As you know I am a lefty golfer, but I am right handed. During my takeaway normally I would always feel as though my right hand commanded the start and much of the swing. I think it just got me out of position at the top and kinda over rotated so the swing was long and often lead to a trappy over the top which caused some less then stellar results.

So the change I made was simply the feeling of the left hand starting the swing and then letting my natural movements take over. I should take some shots of the irons. Flushed! A few a bit thing, but way less curvature, distances the same and overall just great strikes.

I'm the opposite. Natural lefty but play right handed. I've noticed for me that my body responds to different dominant side feels on different days. One day it works to focus on the right hand, next day it's a left shoulder feeling that works. It's occasionally infuriating. I have noticed that for some unknown reason, I don't have much success with any thoughts about manipulating my left hand/wrist, so I end up working backwards to get rid of that wrist cupping. It's weird how the brain works sometimes.

The last couple of days I've been getting out in the yard working with the Swing Jacket, taking swings without a ball. I have wanted to put the net up, but windy conditions have kept me from it.

Mostly, I've been out taking divots and observing where the club contacts the ground. I'll find a piece of grass or a leaf and see where I'm contacting the ground both front to back and side to side. My results have been encouraging, I'm seeing more ball then turf contact and less shanky shots. Today I did hit 5 whiffle balls and they were good.

Lately I've been too obsessed with golf swing and not just letting my body do the work and my game has suffered. The jacket just allows me to move through the ball and takes my mind off all the club manipulation. I'm planning on continuing this for a while to build a feel and try to keep it simple.

Jason, I bolded and underlined the most important parts of what you wrote. It is great to just keep these simple, easy to understand thoughts while practicing, as it truly does lead to great results when you do get back out and play just using things which feel natural to you.

I haven't posted much lately, as work has been pretty hectic and crazy due to staffing issues due to other's being out for medical reasons. I have played the last couple weekends, at different courses than usual, and just went with the idea of hitting a variety of shots and not keeping scores. One course actually played with just irons and none longer than a 4 iron.

I did not go with the idea of using what would be the correct club off a tee, or what a normal shot would dictate, just to get through that round practicing all the clubs in the bag at various distances or situations. I wanted to get ready for an outing we had this past Monday for my old boss, who retired at the end of 2019, then suddenly and tragically passed away in November of 2020 with none of his plans or goals of retirement fulfilled. Sadly, he was the same age as I am.

I did play in that event on Monday, although it was a cold and rainy day and actually had my best round of the year. +1 on a private club, that played about 6500 yards from the white tees, with 17 pars and a lone bogey where I missed a short par putt after initially missing the green with my approach, and then having a 5 footer with some left to right break to get that par.

It truly is more about feeling comfortable and confident that you can come close to the shot that you visualize before you actually pull the trigger and execute it while eliminating any bad thoughts and minimizing any mistakes or errors, as none of us really hit each and every shot perfectly.

Been trying to make some time practice what I can as we head into the off season. Lately I have been working to get 40 to 50 putts in focusing on set up and just the pendulum motion going (thinking about building my own gate). Then I have started up super speed training again and its is great to get the speed coming back along again. Now to keep that off all off season. Finally, today I tried that low point drill that was shared here a while back with two coins where you try to hit only the second one and miss the first. Got in a bit of a grove with pitch shot length swings. It was fun. I moved it forward and back in the stance too for various short game shots. Will have to keep that one in the rotation.

When you are doing the putting with a gate, I would suggest using different length stroke o help ensure you are starting all your putts online.  I personally find longer strokes are easier to get through the gate and struggle more with a stroke for a 5 footer.

I agree, when I can get flowing with the stroke it is much easier but I can't flow 5 footer

Is that why I don't see pendulum strokes much anymore on tour, especially on shorter putts like 5 footers?  I see a lot of putts with little or no followthrough; seems like just enough impetus put on the ball to get it to the hole.  Does this type of stroke have less impact on ball direction than a pendulum stroke?  When greens were very slow many years ago, a lot of pros used a pop stroke... the pro at my old course still does, but the greens there are the slowest in town.

Can't answer that question.   I don't think it matters if it is pendulum or or a putt with little follow through.  I personally have a longer follow through than backswing.  Ultimately it is about how the putter rotates during whatever stroke you make and when I make a stroke to hit the ball longer than say 10 feet, it feels more natural.   The stroke to hit the ball as I get down to 5 feet doesn't seem to have a good flow and as a result the face angle is off at impact.

If you use the same stroke length for all putt,  I could see the same problem happening.  For some people the longer putts might be harder and for some the shorter strokes.

My putting coach told me that when doing gate/start line drills I should simulate different length putts.   I try not to say specific lengths because these drills should generally be done without putting at a hole.

Tried to practice yesterday at the local golf dome and rented out a trackman hitting bay with 70 yards of length. The trackman was completely off. Swing speed was about 8 mph slower than usual and it kept ballooning spin number with my driver high than I’ve ever seen despite having a positive angle of attack and relatively straight ball flight. Spin numbers were close at times to 5-7k. It felt like a bit of a waste for trying to get solid data. The management at the dome had no answers either for how to fix it and by that time it was too late and I was too frustrated. At least I got some swing in with a controlled environment. Can’t wait to play Sunday in 30 mph wind 😂

Continuing work on getting more upright in my backswing and getting a full shoulder turn. My tendency is to let the club work inside and behind me (fake turn). On the downswing that leaves me with no recourse but to flip hook or block. Or, if I try to hang back I'll hit it three fairways to the right.

Finished the bucket with a bunch of solid pitching wedges and five irons. Gives me some hope that I will get this offseason's practice off on the right foot.

After a HORRIBLE round yesterday, and some family time to remind me that my life isn't completely defined by my golf score... only partially 😉, I excused myself and my 8 iron to the practce mat/net in my carport.

After warming up and going through some slow positional swings to get back on technical track, I set up the mevo and worked on swing path and a more aggressive downswing, by increasing the left knee bend on the back swing - and straightening it naturally on the down swing.  My swing speed increased a few mph, my carry distance increased 5-7 yards, and the consistency in contact improved dramatically from my experience in my round earlier in the day. And though the mevo doesn't track club face or shot shape data, I can only go by feel... but I the path felt like a draw path to me (opposed to the the outside in with an open face relative to the swing path swing I was trying to tame all day).

Lost track of time, and what started as a few minutes to work out the bugs, ended with 138 swings logged in the mevo.  My wife just shook her head as I came inside and needed ANOTHER shower.

A good session that I look forward to taking to the open range tomorrow.

That comment on increasing the left knee bend on the backswing makes me feel better that it is not just me that struggles there. When I do it correctly I feel like I'm able to load into that leg and push off, but if I don't, I just kind of shift to the left and it throws my swing out of sync. That's the biggest thing I've been working on recently. Like you said, if it lines up correctly, I can easily get an extra 3-5 mph out of my swing and not actually put any extra effort in.

I am SO HAPPY to know I'm not crazy... or we are crazy together Rich!  haha.

My "miss" swing is a "sway and over"... meaning I sway back on my right leg, then my first move down is turning the shoulders and re-routing my club over the top.  Ugh... I hate that swing.

I agree with your comment... that left knee bend keeps me from swaying even though I'm still loading the right side... the swing path from that position "posts" my swing on the left leg and keeps me from re-routing over the top.. It feels funky at first on the backswing, but boy the contact is sure solid when I execute it properly.

We finally had a nice enough day where I was able to put the net up and hit some balls. The last few days have brought winds in the 15-20 mph range and that's just not too good for the Spornia. I've been doing a lot of dry swinging in the yard while wearing the Swing Jacket and occasionally hitting some whiffle balls.

I've been dealing with the shanks and finding out that the jacket helps me to relax and turn more aggressively, not my usual hit at the ball habit.

I hit about 50 balls today and only hit 2 shanks. I was happy that I was hitting plastic balls, as one made a bee line right at my wife's car. Other than that, I hit the ball well. It wasn't perfect, but I feel more confident in my ability to hit the ball well. I've been out swinging while wearing it at least 4 times the past week and will continue to do so for a while going forward.

You gotta enjoy the grind.

Enjoyed a great weather day using a light, keep the grease loose, routine while sharing insights with two other players upon a beautifully manicured range- doesn't get a whole lot better as range and playing days are drawing down for the year.   Spent my time controlling radius and shot making while enjoying the sight of a well struck ball climb against a clear blue sky.

Good hand action comes from good body action.

Went to the range today to get some video to send to the coach. Got some video hitting some 5-irons and more importantly, driver. With the driver giving me trouble with the hooks lately, I really wanted to get another pair of eyes on the swing.

Hit a few 3 woods off the deck and still happy with the decision on that one. Spent about half of the bucket working on different distances with my wedges. I find it a little strange, but I have to focus on feeling like I am moving the left hip back more than usual to make solid contact with the wedges. It almost feels like a different movement to me, but I definitely needed to work on it. Finished with about 20 balls around the chipping area. I think the immediate future practice plans are going to focus a lot on short game and driver. I'm feeling comfortable with the hybrids and irons, but those other areas are going to be able to improve my scores.

Rough practice after not touching a club for over a week. My irons were trash, for me. I’m really struggling to properly rotate through the ball which is leading to an ugly pull, and even uglier way left of target divots. I had a green at 130 yards, and hit about 40 balls and only half hit the green. Bad for me, I’ve been way above that for over a month, but I’m gonna chalk this up as rust. But any advice on better rotation through the ball is greatly appreciated. Putting on the other had was hot. Worked on distance control, and I was much improved. I put on a new grip and cut the putter down a half inch. It got my eye more over the ball and I could see the line much better.

If you aren’t rotating thru on the downswing/follow thru it’s because the body is stalling for some reason, typically club in a bad spot and being stuck.

Have to figure out what’s happening in the takeaway and/or backswing that’s causing it. Without any visor anything anyone suggests is just a guess and may or may not be a fix

Had the night to myself so I enjoyed the beautiful weather with a couple of large buckets at the range after work.

I had another really good session, continuing a nice run to end the season. I've been focusing on a lot of little things lately, with my sequence being:

  • Shoulder alignment check. My tendency is to close my shoulders.
  • 60/60/100 feel for pressure at setup, top of backswing and finish.
  • Pressure in the inner balls of feet, slightly favoring toes, especially in longer clubs.
  • Straight right arm feeling in the backswing with left thumb pointing at sky.
  • Complete my backswing with a full shoulder turn.
  • Right shoulder stays back to start the downswing.
  • Butt of club to 3 o'clock on downswing.
  • "Swoosh" comes at/after the ball, which is only possible if I don't spin out from the top.
  • Maintain balance throughout swing to finish.

Seems like a lot, but things are just clicking now. Lots of really solid shots, even with driver.

Spent the last 20 or so balls going all out and had some great results. With a slight breeze at my back I carried a few drivers over the back fence at 285 or so, and covered the 189 flag several times with my 8 iron.

I'd almost never swing that fully on course, but it's great mental work to show myself I can swing fast and still control the ball.

Continued being a bit more dedicated taking time each day to practice. Was able to work on 50 12 foot putts today, and I noticed that I ten to set up a little open with the putter which is why I tend to push the ball to the right. So focusing on set up an being square, with some alignment aids.

Then was able to get a Super Speed session in as I ramp up for two weeks here. The speed is coming back a bit, but took much too much time off on this. Looking forward to keeping this up all winter, hopefully it will help keep me sane as well.

Little bit of an "aha!" moment at the range today with the irons. I've been feeling like I am moving back and left with the hips away from the ball to get solid contact on wedges. Turns out that same feel helps to fight a little bit of the early extension with the irons. This is the result after four shots trying this with my 8-iron.

Jayson got back to me on the driver so I spent a good chunk of time working on my problems there. It's an adjustment for sure but I had a lot less of the low hooks today. Small incremental improvements. Gotta get rid of this toe hit though.

Hitting the range latter today and have a tee time on Sunday after church.  I'm supposed to play next Friday and Saturday, also.  Haven't played since Labor Day - so much rain and of course the hurricane to top it all off.  Thankful for my hitting net.  Can't wait to start playing golf again - I don't know how you guys make it through the winter months.

Just before I went to the range - hit some into the net. Still cruising around 96,97 mph with driver. 9262DCAA-4B02-46C7-86B8-4EFFD878A1CC.jpeg.f94de2de63ef970ebdb8138f3579d13f.jpeg

Made it to the range this afternoon, and the pro came by to take a look, and in three swings I was cured lol. I’ve been working on not taking the club inside, and trying to hit a fade. So I was taking it outside, and getting disconnected. I am keeping the left arm on my chest and up as I go around, and baby fades on lock. Felt so good to stripe it again. Looking forward to playing this weekend, gotta get ready for a tournament next weekend.
