What/How Did You Practice Today?

I hadnt touched a club since June 3rd. Crowded courses and packing foe a major week trip to the Alvord Desert and Steens Mtns left me with no time. A few days before I left on my trip I picked up my Mizuno 919 Tours and left them idol while I loaded up and played in the heat on my quad out in Eastern Oregon. Got home last night and hit the range this evening.

Started out not great and left me wondering about my purchase. After 30 balls of shaking the rust off. I started making good contact and found a good tempo. Ball flight had a consistent fade which told me the standard lie needed to go upright as Im normally  2 degrees up. Checked the lie and then added some lie tape to the sole and found they needed to be upright. I wasnt surprised as I left them standard for a reason so I could fine tune each iron.

I will hit more tomorrow and work a club at a time adjusting the lie and I might even chsnge the loft a hair.

All in all very pleased with my clubs and cant wait to playba round.

I like a little fade to my ball but this was too much so Ill tone it down.

Over the past winter I picked up a hybrid to replace my 5 iron. Well, since I put the Tommy Armour Atomic irons back into the bag I’m getting more distance. So I had me a nice little competition and decided to go back to the 5 Iron. May also help when I’m further away but in some deeper rough. Plus, I was just excited about being able to go hit on a weeknight.

Had to take the week off last week because it was so busy - preached 4 different sermons for 6 services - 2 virtual and 4 live/virtual ones.

At any rate got to the range today and was reminded how the better I’m hitting the ball the worse I am from the sand. For real.

I hit the ball great -was driving it long and straight, really striped it through the bag. Will be aiming away from traps tomorrow though. :)

Last couple of rounds I have been hitting the ball really well and wanted to keep that feeling going.

Today just work on a few things with my new Cobra SZ FW to make sure I was comfortable enough for the weekend.

15 shots with the 3 wood,  last 5 were what it should be and stop there.
15 shots with the Driver again, just getting the feel of the club release and that the shots were consistent.
15 Shots with 8 iron
15 shots full shots with 56 Wedge

Chipping:
20 shots with 56 from 25-30 ft
20 Shots with 60 from 25-30 ft

Putting:
10 putts from 3 ft - Left / Right putts
10 putts from 5 ft - Left / Right putts
10 putts from 10 ft - Left /Right putts

Not over doing it just get that feel and stop, not to try to fix anything that could result in undoing the resent good work.

Got my putter back after having the shaft re-installed, had a bit of rust and was a bit loose in the head.  Had a roll of a few putts using the PuttOut Gate at 3 feet. Made 15 in a row before just glancing the left side of the gate, my previous best was 4.

Did a few drills with the Planemate, getting used to the sensation of the club dropping into the slot, and the feeling of taking the club away wider.

Did another virtual putting lesson with the pro that taught me how to use the broomstick. A few setup changes and a gear change, went from 46” to 48” in the putter to get a tad bit taller and stay over the ball. Thanks to the $30 I spent yesterday on an Odyssey 2 ball long it just felt better in the setup. Pulled the grip on my gamer and put a 2” extension in the shaft and we are good to go. Will have another 15 minutes tonight to see how it looks with the putter i use on the course.

I needed to get out for a day of practice; I have been playing steady for over a week.  So, while my wife played in her Wednesday morning ladies league, I practiced... and practiced... and practiced some more.

Hit a small bucket of range balls off a tight lie to the pitching green 30 yards away with my 60º wedge.  The first bucket was not that great...  pick them up and do it again.  Better.  Combination of high shots and low shots to the left portion of the green; no flagsticks to aim at.

Bounce is my friend.  Who said you can't hit a high bounce wedge off a tight lie??

IMG_6288.jpeg.93cc9c32ddf0e7427046bd6d28c5e758.jpeg

Then took a large bucket to the range to work on rotation; getting my right hip deep.  When I play I tend to not rotate much; I did that a lot at the MGS outing at Circling Raven last weekend.  Drivers and mid irons.  Took about an hour.

Went to our putting green to chip.  There is one small mound that is near the practice bunker where I can practice downhill chip shots trying to keep the ball on the green.  Got most shots to land on the green and stop on the narrowest part of the practice green.  We have this shot on several holes if you miss the green, so practicing it is necessary.

Ran out of time, so putting practice tomorrow.

Lots of drives to see what worked best - swing speeds between 86 and 100.

My sweet zone was 93-95. - it was easy for me to swing at that speed and hit the sweet spot.

That’s where I need to reside right now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hit two small buckets at the range this afternoon. First bucket was just working on my takeaway with my 54 and my 7i. Second bucket was a simulated round. Driver was pretty decent. Irons were hot & cold but everything went straight so I’ll take it

Hit balls on Sunday - worked on driver with more than one swing at 99 on the radar and carry distances approaching 230 - very pleased with that!

Also hit some beautiful 7 irons, 7 woods and 48 degree wedge shots.

Then went to the traps to try and work our issues that I’m having there. Better but still having issues.

I personally like how he sweeps the sand away while in bunkers and doesn’t dig the ball out. The technique Works best on the practice swing.

I asked for it. :)

I was simply trying to give 808nation a visual for a sweeping swing.

I really need to practice my irons and hybrids, but sort of in a weird situation and am really not able to practice.

At my club, the range is only open for warm up prior to a round because of Covid. You can only come 25 minutes before your round and are you only supposed to hit less than 25 balls.

Had to take down my backyard practice net because i am doing some backyard renovation.

Been swinging a lot in the garage the past few days and for a second it felt like I forgot how to swing a club. I don't wanna say I found the missing link and end up jinxing myself, but I think I found it. Like the late, great Chubbs used to say... "It's all in the hips." I have to tell myself to use my hips as it doesn't feel natural just yet, but when I get them involved, I hit everything so much better. I guess I wasn't clearing them properly before.

I'll just have to remember Chubbs before I swing every time.
