I owe my buddy a round of drinks. After my driver "lesson" with him, I've been getting better and better with the big stick. Hit a few that rolled out to the back net at the range today... OK granted I was on the far edge that's angled a bit, but still, throw me a bone here LOL!

I'm genuinely excited to play tomorrow morning and see how things go, I'm taking the Mini out of the bag so it'll either be the R1 or my 4w off the tee. When I have scoring in mind, we'll see how the driver behaves.

60/60/100 drill, which I think was courtesy of @B.Boston posting something from Chris Ryan's YouTube channel on here.

I have not been hitting the ball well, and had a pretty lousy bucket at lunch. As I was walking back to my car, I saw one of our university's golfers smashing his 3 wood and it sure looked like the 60/60/100 drill. I had just enough time for another half bucket and for whatever reason tried that feeling. What a difference! I went from having zero face control to hitting most everything straight again, and with some zip as I was able to get to my front side so much easier. Actually finished in a nice looking finish position, which is a good indicator my pressure moving around correctly.

Going to have to work some more on it, and focus more during my rounds on staying a little more into my front side throughout the swing. I tend to sway off the ball a little bit and everything becomes reliant on timing to square the face.

So I went to play after few practice sessions and was frustrating as usual to score.
There too many things going on in my head

It’s just easier for my me to focus on a target    and play to that

I have decided to stick to primary target in mind
It will be ball , hole or pin
and structure the rest of the surrounding images to that that primary target

I had a good net session last evening playing around with the mevo.  It is very consistent with its readings and I was able to start guessing the ball speed within a couple mph's after a few shots.  I corrected a lack of turn that was creeping into the swing and I was making pretty good contact.  I tried the 49*,  8i & 7i and it picked them up real well.  I tried the 53* and it wasn't seeing that shot so I think it was getting too high too quickly for the inside setting with the net.

More 60-60-100 work, after having a great ball striking round this morning. Really liking the feel when I get it right.

I spent about 10-12 shots going all out with the 7 iron after getting loose. Not quite to @Chip Strokes territory yet, but getting the little extra hip turn I've been working on has helped a bit:

1315320727_Screenshot_20210702-142348_FSGolf.jpg.e8036496e4eb7bdafc3d4bd174c81038.jpg

Unfortunately tired me out a bit and the rest of the bucket wasn't as good. Should have done it at the end! Oh well.

I need to work on translating those 7 iron feels to the longer clubs next. Once I get past the 6 iron I have a much harder time getting everything squared up and I'm way less efficient.

Did get a damp range session in at lunch today. @Lacassemand I tried to hit some bombs but the balls were dropping out of the sky today. I’m guessing the excess moisture on them has me spinning at about 0 rpm on a few shots.

I did dry some so I could get some work in with both hybrids… the TSi3 is already feeling mighty comfortable and seems like it will protect against that hook. I hit a ball that I think would have snapped right into then side netting and it held its line really well and didn’t over draw that much. Pure strikes were still pretty straight too.

I think I may swap the Smoke black RDX and KBS Tour Proto around. Raw lengths looks about the same so both should still play stock length even with the TSi3 having an adjustable hosel. For me the KBS just has a little bit more load and should keep my launch in the mid range. The RDX does feel really good though for a stable shaft with a firm handle.

So I had a lesson with a new pro yesterday. On and off over the last few years I've had lessons with my course pro and I asked him about more consistent lessons this year, but it's July and I hadn't had one yet...so moving on.

In short he quickly diagnosed two small issues one in the set up and one in the takeaway. He moved my left bicep more on top of my chest where I had it next to it. This was leading to my torso pointing to the left of my target, explaining my alternating block/pull problem this year.

Then in the takeaway my first move a dropping the club way inside. I know at some point I built this move into my swing because I used to hit a wicked banana slice until I spent a summer on the range until I hit a pull/draw getting rid of it. It had become exaggerated and needed to get back towards the line.

Additionally, he checked out my 50* wedge and found it was actually 52 degrees, so he bent it back. I'm playing all 3 days so I should have plenty of opportunities to work on these changes.

I went to the range today with a specific goal in mind: working on weight shift. I have a bad habit of ending up with all my weight still on the back foot, leading to a cornucopia of mis-hits.

The plan was to work on the 60-60-100 drill and making sure that I exited left. I've been doing dry swings in the yard and practicing without a club in the house, what could go wrong?

After starting to warm up with some wedge shots, I developed a pattern of chunks and stamps and my plan disintegrated quickly. About ten different swing thoughts invaded my mind and I didn't know what I was doing over the ball. I then had to abandon the irons and move on to woods.

Fairway woods were solid, at least the effort I've been putting into them is finally showing promise. I moved on to a few shots with driver and other than one sky ball, I hit it well. 20210703_132614-01.jpeg.b3054542766bc49688f695d260b25d60.jpeg

I finished off hitting 7 iron, spraying a line of foot spray about two inches in front of the ball and focused on hitting in front of the line and started making decent contact. I need to remember to focus on the external and not internally.

After an early round that felt more like scrambling all day, than ball striking - and feeling like what little game I have... was left in the car with my street shoes... I spent time on my home practice area (mat and net) to search for a little of that magic.  After about 10 marginal feeling shots, I realized I was pulling back way inside on the take away, causing me to go over the top (dead pulls, slices, generally poorly struck golf shots that plagued me today in my round).  Also pulled out my Lag Shot club and even into the net, I could tell that something was up.  Concentrated on a more "outside" takeaway which helped me properly turn my shoulders, and started feeling the solid strikes again.  I went until I hit 10 solid feeling shots in a row (probably about 50 swings total after the realization).  Hopefully that will pay off on my next break in the weather on the course.

BTW, just studied up on the 60/60/100 drill mentioned in several posts above... will be working on that tomorrow.  Thanks MGS Forum... great resource for all that ails me.

EDIT:  Couldn't wait, had to try it out into my net.... uhhh  WOW!

Lots of passing rain showers today kept me from cutting grass but it seems to have cleared up for good and I went out to putt a little this evening.  I heard a snort, looked up and saw I had an audience...

Hit about 15 bags with the seven iron, but really I just watched my son take his first hacks at a golf ball with real clubs. It was a great time. He really enjoyed it and had his highlight were he hit the balls on three straight swings 😀.

Though he told me he likes the "big club" already looking to hit some bombs. Best part was when we were done he asked to go back tomorrow. Look forward to more memories with him.

Wedge practice this morning at 65yd comparing an SM6 with my custom grind 588.  The 588 is way more consistent for me with turf contact and dispersion.  I hit about 50 with each and don't see a reason to swap out wedges.

The last batch of 12 shots with the 588 had he extra happy...11/12 hit the green and rolled through just past the target pin.  The 12th was pulled slightly and ended up about 12' left of the pin, still a reasonable birdie putt!

This green doesn't hold as well as real grass so I expect the rollout.  I can't bring myself to grind away on the SM6 sole and SWMBO has rejected it from her bag so it will probably go up for adoption soon.

Differential practice day on the range today. After some wedges and 7 I with the planemate,  Hit 8 irons left and right of a stick I put 5 yards ahead of me. Then working on toe and heel strikes. Then did the same with my 5i and super hybrid. Then the same with my driver as well as trying to land it between two yardage markers.

Then onto some short game work. Tried some chips at various yardages with my 4 wedges. PW and GW most consistent. Will try one of those on the course next time exclusively. 58 did some soft flops as well.

Pitching practice. Was ugly. Then last two balls told myself I need to get it close for par. Boom. Gave me just a touch more focus to execute

Finally differential putting practice trying to go left and right of the hole. Most putts I tried to go right actually went in. Golf is a silly game.

Follow my journey to enjoying golf and going low

BTW, just studied up on the 60/60/100 drill mentioned in several posts above... will be working on that tomorrow.  Thanks MGS Forum... great resource for all that ails me.

EDIT:  Couldn't wait, had to try it out into my net.... uhhh  WOW!

Huge improvement for me when I get the feel right.

This is the latest version of the video from Chris Ryan, for those that are interested:

I've been pounding the driver with the driver feel he has at the end of the video as well. After weeks of really awful ball striking I got a ton of distance and control back over the past few rounds.

Yes, I could feel the immediate feedback in my swing from that perceived 60/60/100 weight through the swing.  Now if I can get my swing speeds up around yours Edingc, I would be able to sleep at night ;).

I took another trip to the range today. I started out warming up with my wedges and while not bad, they weren't exactly stellar until I realized I wasn't accelerating through them. Same can be said for irons, realized that I was taking too long of a backswing and causing me to stay back on my right side which led to a lot of chunky shots. Hit some fairways and drivers trying to find a rhythm with them, the fairways need more work and the driver needs tweaking. I actually hit a couple off the crown. 😱20210705_130855-01.jpeg.75e2de933136603486456424abbbc9d3.jpeg

On a good note, at least I was seeing a pattern emerge of high toe and it was fairly consistent. Might need to switch to a shorter tee or just tee the ones I use a bit lower to counteract the high strike.

I then moved on and was playing the first six holes on the course, switching clubs between shots.

I finished the day focusing on a better follow through, I was trying to finish in a nice, balanced position with my right toes barely touching the ground and the top of my foot facing the target. The results were good, I was still hitting them slightly fat, but it's a good starting point.

I rolled two putts yesterday and played mini golf with my kids the day before, does that count as practice?  Been over a month since I have hit a golf ball and not sure that streak ends this coming weekend by choice and not circumstance.

Good by me.  Still more practice than I’ve done.

I have a question for all you "At-Home" practice golfers.

What types of things do you work on at home when using a mat and net?

I now have a space dedicated under cover of my carport with a Realfeel Mat and a large Aoneky Net.  I am certainly getting the contact feel (the mat is really good at accepting a "divot" swing - and will let me "chunk" a shot without the club bounce that some mats give).  I have a Mevo to set up (though I haven't yet utilized the video feature - which will be great once I better understand what I'm looking for in my swing - which is another question... is there a thread on MGS that users post vids of their swing for others to offer suggestions on where to improve?).

But aside from working on good contact based on the feel, and the stats the mevo provides (swing speed, carry distance, etc), and just repetition based strength in my swing (all which I am getting much more educated on now that having a mini range right outside my kitchen door - it is definitely addictive) -  I am looking for things to focus on to improve my scoring - while not being able to see shot shape, roll out, etc.  Also, I would hate to spend a bunch of time and engrain bad swing habits because I'm not seeing the full shot shape and such (future addition of a Mevo+ or SkyTrak heavily considered, but may need to wait until next season).

So - what do you all work on when doing your net work?

May everyone shoot below your handicap in your next round!  ~Tim
