What/How Did You Practice Today?

Are you putting those all in a row from the same spot?

The parallel 4 footers vary between 4&6 feet along the same line.  The 12 ft. drill I put from anywhere between 8 ft. and 14 ft. within a 30 degree arc from the alignment sticks and the lags are from all over the green.  Short of the 4 footers I reset after each putt and treat it like I'm actually putting.

EDIT:  I'd like to claim that I'm moving around so that I'm not trying to groove, but in all honesty it's more about me not wearing holes into the green with my feet.

Was at the golf store and was on fire    Holing from everywhere. With putters that normally don’t fit my eye.  The only feel I had was making same 5 foot putting stroke and just adding length to the stroke   Once I got beyond 15 feet was Adding just a bit of knee flex and tempo and all I thought was “ROLL”.   I wasn’t even consciously aiming

I’ve put in a lot of range time since Saturday when I had my second bad round in 3 days. I’ve adjusted a few things with my backswing.. I get lazy with a sway and my wrist hinge if I don’t keep working at it. When I set the club properly it’s pretty easy for me to shallow it out and play some good golf. When I don’t bad things happen.

Everything felt really good this afternoon when I left the range today, even the short game. I’m playing the Hackler tomorrow, a college course at Coastal Carolina U. We’ll see how it goes…

Trying to do eye exercises   and Quiet my eyes for putting.   I would cover my baseball cap with my hands so I look more straight ahead   My eyes move too much on the putting green and don’t move enough for my full swing.  Trying a few things like Focus on a spot on the ground just front on me for few seconds helps. Heads up putting also helps as I don’t move my eyes and “peek”   Closing my eyes and imagination  Trying to focus on a dot on the ball doesn’t seem to help as much as if I focus on part of the putter that doesn’t move as much like the handle  of the putter

Went again last night during son's football practice.  Got a solid 90+ minutes working 1/2, 3/4 and full wedges.  Starting to see more consistency in my 1/2 and 3/4 swings.  Finished up with about 60 chips and flops onto the practice green from about 30-40 ft away.

Came to a realization last night.  the more consistent i get the my PW and 56* the less I find myself wanting to use my 60* for any shot longer than 50 yards..  it seems to be the wedge that gives me the most problems.

sticking with this schedule, starting to like dedicating a Wednesday evening to working on my short game.

More chipping. Got fun with it (from the other day) and took the kids basketball hoop and put it on the stairs. I ended up videoing on the stairs with 1 phone and on the landing facing me (not the best quality). After 2:13 seconds...DRAINED IT! My wife is still making fun of me but thats gold IMO.

Don't mind my absolutely atrocious video skills. I am not @edingc

The way I putt, the handle moves quite a bit.

It’s helping me hit targets, getting it in after was just a bonus 🤣. It’s actually been great for different trajectories. Able to hit multiple spots on the whole thing.

I played for the first time this year last week - it was terrible -

In fact I resolved to either quit altogether or start practicing. I’m going to hit the range twice a week and the practice green once a week from now until Holy Week. I may or may not play during that time but I need to get some consistency back in my swing.

I was pretty surprised at how fast I was with driver today. I did drive the ball long, for me, last week. So something is up there.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Practicing short chips and putting

I notice I prefer to ground the club the closer I’m to the hole the I may or may not lift the club to start the motion. I find I can aim better when I ground the club first.
For longer chips/pitch and iron swings I generally like to keep club hovering

practice bunker shots.  It’s hard to find a local practice facility that has Greenside bunker  There is a video where this teaching pro suggest resting a ball on a folded up towel and hit the towel behind the ball and it should feel like a bunker shot  if I wanted to practice bunker shot but there no sand

Did not want to try that today. Did find local course that had bunkers and for short bunker shots I felt like I had to hit the sand twice as hard compared to if I had the same distance to hole when chipping of a clean lie

To do this out of sand I was using more of my hips and body by squating down rather standing up and just use  arms action which I normally do when chipping

I'll have to call it practice today. I went to the course since it was sunny and 50 degrees. Nobody on the tee box or driving range. But the senior group was all starting to file in and were getting ready to draw teams. There are about 20 of them and I didn't want to get stuck behind them. Pace of play is not in their vocabulary. Sometimes they go off in a five some or even a six some. They play about 4 times a week and always at noon.

I haven't played since January 1st so I wasn't planning on breaking any records. No warm up, right to the 1st tee. Pipe one straight down the middle. 8 iron on and two putt for par. 2nd hole perfect tee shot came up short on the severe uphill green on the second shot. Lob wedge to 5 feet, made the par putt. Now the mind says keep it up and the body says you should have warmed up. Third hole par 3 not such a great hybrid shot. But pin high just right of the green. Chip from hard pan over a trap just made it on the green with a back pin placement. Two putt for a bogey.

Body said don't be stupid, my back was already a little tight. Driving range was right there so called the round and went and hit a bucket. Range practice went better than expected for not having swung a club for 7 weeks. No chunks or thins, everything straight. Only noticeable thing was some distance loss, but I'll get that back. Overall a successful day.

First time being able to get a full practice session in this year on grass. Been playing more and our course uses mats when it’s wet out. Was nice to be able to get better feedback on short game. I feel like hitting the majority of balls from 100 and in with different clubs will translate better to the course for coming weeks. I also spent a good amount of time chipping. Driving has been strong this year with my short game costing me a lot of dumb strokes. Hopefully it translates this week.

Found a nice little driving range a few miles from my company's main office that is the perfect place for me to practice. Can go up, get my bucket and start practicing without having to talk to a soul. It's great.

Aside from that, started with some drills pausing at the top of the backswing for a few seconds, focusing on turning the wrist down and then finishing the swing. Hit a few gnarly pull hooks, but I can live with that as even my coach said it's part of the process to fix my current issue. Went through about 1/3 of the bucket doing that. Followed by focusing on the same feel in a normal pace swing with a few clubs for the second third. Last third I hit wedges. Checking distances on what felt like 1/2 and 3/4 swings with them all and seeing where they are at. I rarely make a full swing with a wedge so I didn't bother taking any. Honestly, if I can carry this swing over to the weekend, I'll be ecstatic. I'm playing the Palm course at Disney on Saturday and Falcon's Fire on Sunday.

We've been above freezing and soggy, which has cleared the snow off my back patio and part of the back yard for the time being. I managed to hit about a tube and a half of chips/pitches last night before the cold/darkness got to me. Really decent results for the first time not hitting indoors since like November. Really was just working on staying connected and had some good results. Only lost one ball to the snow when I smoked a flop shot well past my target.

It was nice hitting to an actual target again and not just a net, even if only for chips. If this weather keeps it up, I might start to see a few courses open up in 2-3 weeks time.

Worked on my swing yesterday and today after my most wanted sessions and got a couple of tips from Harry on some things to try.    path numbers were really inside out and I had gotten myself pretty closed at address.  Made some adjustments and I now feel pretty open at address but the path has shifted from 5-8 in-to-out to 1-3 in-to-out.   The next problem was that my face was closed to the path so everything was going left.  Weakened the right hand a little bit and I was better able to improve the face angle.    I have another session on Thursday and see how the swing holds up and then hopefully I can carry it on to my weekend round.

During Sunday's range session I went in with a purpose. I normally hit everything pretty well. Good contact and straight ball flights with a medium trajectory. EXCEPT for two clubs in the bag. My 3 wood and my hybrid. They have a larger than wanted fade. I didn't understand why. I hit the driver and 5 wood straight as an arrow but the 3 wood not so much. So I hit the 3 wood and the same large fade. After three in a row I was bound and determined to figure this out. Without moving my feet or body after contact I looked down at my feet. For some reason my left foot was forward of my right. Why? Who knows. And why only with that club. So I focused on getting the left foot pulled  back into the correct position. Hit another and what do you know, straight as an arrow. Fluke you say, nope, everyone after that straight as an arrow. Then on to the hybrid and it was the same problem. Guess I can't blame the clubs anymore. Two problem children straightened out. So much looking forward to green grass soon!  I feel some eagles coming on some par 5's this season.

... You have brought up a great teaching moment. The golfers I see on the course that are lined up incorrectly is just mind boggling. It is not uncommon to see someone lining up 30-40* to the right. The adjustments that need to be made from that alignment are just off the charts difficult. When it is someone I know that asks for help, I lay down a shaft at their feet then another parallel to the ball showing where the ball is aimed and they are all completely baffled as they think they are lined up down the middle of the fairway. The other error of course is lining up aimed far to the left because they are slicing the ball which all but guarantees they will do just that.

... This error is so easy to check and should be at the top of the list for everyone, but especially those suffering inconsistent directional control. Most golfers are comfortable with what they are doing and changing it can be very difficult. Often when I lay down two shafts and help them align their feet parallel to the target line, they waggle their feet making tiny incremental movements until they are pretty much right back where they started 30-40* open and then have no idea how they got there and would swear they didn't move their feet. Change is difficult and takes dedication and perseverance to overcome what is comfortable.

Working on this myself.    Watch most pros during their practice sessions and they are using aids to help make sure their alignment is correct.

Got on a local simulator for an hour this morning, and I hit it like a guy who’s been doing “max effort” speed training for 4 months…sprayed it everywhere.  I have work to do before the season begins…

... Only been speed training a couple weeks but it has had a similar effect on my game, mostly just my driver. I will stick with it and hope to find a compromise in the middle as adding 5 mph to my swing speed will be plenty for me. Obviously I just started so time will tell if I can adjust, but playing 5 times a week certainly should help.

It's kind of an understood thing that with speed training that there will be an adjustment period with your newfound speed, so I'm not exactly freaking out about it.  If anything I just seem to have developed a bit of a spin out...when I focused on the feeling of keeping my back to the target longer I was fine.  But, I'll need to practice and drill that feel so I don't have to think about it on the course.

Rolled 50 putts on my perfect puttting mat. Helps me with confidence on the course to make the short ones and trust the line on the ball.

... Yup, I understood that going in. After swinging basically the same off the tee for about 25 years making an abrupt change will have short term consequences but hopefully long term gains.

Didn’t play today (trying to keep myself in the good books before a golf trip next week) so I got in an hour of short game practice. Some chipping with 50 and 58 wedges. Focussed on crisp contact, happy with the results which hopefully will translate on course. Finished with some 50 yard pitches, really working on distance control.
