What/How Did You Practice Today?

One thing I noticed in my swing is that you do have to be careful not to throw your pressure out over your trail foot without recentering or, worse, swaying to get the movement. Drew Cooper talks about feeling the pressure start to move back to center by P2/club shaft parallel in backswing, and for me that's a great queue to keep my pressure from doing that.

Every coach that talks about recentering talks about it happening at that and no later than p3/lead arm parallel. After that it’s too later. The thing is at p2 there is is no more pressure going into the trail leg

Range before gym this morning. Irons are heel side strike and some hosel rockets. I think I need to move back a smidge to compensate. When I strike well it was a nice fade but distance not there.

Be careful about moving back as a compensation.  When you do, your brain thinks you are too far back and tells your body to move toward the ball on the downswing... causing more OTT and more hosel rockets.  Monte told me to move closer to the ball, and the body will tend to stay back during the downswing as you rotate.

When you THINK you need to do something, you probably need to do the opposite.  Golf is funny that way.

short game practice was good getting chipping feels. Lag putting good. Learned I need better control to leave more short. I was blowing by more often than being short by 3 ft

You are either getting steep in transition and coming in with an open face while early extending or you are still coming from to far out and have an open face as you swing across the ball.

It’s more than not likely where you are standing but how your body is moving and that you are getting away from the ball in the swing

Right to left putts are a problem for me.  I have accepted this   Not sure why.  But I have overcome this I have read 360 degree. Do a long walk around the cup   Find my spot and once I find my spot   I don’t look at the cup just aim the spot.   Sometimes my eyes will want to look at the cup like in chipping.  If that happens I close my eyes to putt.

I went to the range this morning to try and do some drills… Well, I got frustrated and went back to the tried-and-true drill I got two years ago. I put a ball down, then I put my two feet in line directly behind the ball, on the target line, then from my rear foot, I measure one foot back toward me and place a ball there. On the downswing, the club head has to pass over that inside rear ball on its way to impacting the ball In addressing. This gets my club on the correct plane on the downswing, and keeps me coming from the inside, fighting my tendency to get steep. Also, since I early-extend and stand-up so often, it helps me make a more rotational swing. It’s a drill I got from Tyler McGhie and after doing it awhile I really start to have much better contact, and body movement.

Went to the range today to play with the Garmin.  So far my observations are that it's pretty accurate as to flight path for me if I'm properly aligned with accurate distances that drop off in accuracy as you work into the top of the bag.  Can't tell if that's an algorithm thing or a range ball thing.  It doesn't have a setting for range balls like the Mevo, so maybe a bit of both combined with me not hitting the ball as far as I think I do  🙃

I played a pair of sim rounds today as I've been hyper focused on swing/putting/and speed training lately and wanted to take it easy.  Turns out that it was excellent practice anyway and it'll be something I do regularly.  It brought some realism to the range.  There weren't any wasted swings as each one was to a specific (simulated) point and distance.  I played my home course and found it pretty interesting that I shot what I normally shot -- losing strokes in exactly the same way on the sim as I do in real life.  Distances were surprisingly accurate as I hit many of the same shots from the same distances I do when I play for real.  I played a second one at a much tighter course I know (Quail Hollow Boise) and also found that pretty accurate.  The best part was that in a little over an hour I 'played' two 18 hole rounds of golf and got a ton of course management practice in.  I originally bought the Garmin aiming to use it for gathering data and understanding my misses and shot dispersion, but I think the 'playing' practice is going to be just as valuable.  Pretty neat little tool.

I've been going to the range after work a few times this week and I can't even explain how happy I've been with the results. It's been the weirdest feeling for me to step up and not have 100 thoughts going through my head. Somewhat related to this, I think it's time to cut ties with the coach I've been working with for the past year. Nothing against him as an instructor, but it has been causing too many problems in my game. I've purposely not taken any video the last few trips to the range because I know that from a technical side my swing has flaws, but I'm getting to a place where I'm accepting that my swing is my swing.

I talked Owen into coming with me to River Heights to play holes one and nine before the sun went down.  It was cold in the mid 30s but no wind.  We each took a couple of clubs and a few balls and off we went.

Owen hadn't touched a club in nearly two months since he'd had a major flare up of GERD.  Poor guy dropped five balls on the tee box as he hit shank after shank, lol.  Mostly expected given his layoff, and he finished one of the balls on nine with a chip in from the rough just off the green.

I took a couple of the Titleist prototype balls and my new PXG 3 wood I'm still trying to figure out.  This time around, it worked.  After my first tee shot bounced off a tree, I hit four beautiful balls on the two holes.  My couple of full approach shots with my PW were really good too.  Really close and on the green was a struggle but in the conditions I'll take it.

Been practicing my setup in the garage and it was nice to see some ball flight.  Wouldn't mind doing this again as long as the snow holds off.

Some more range time and another lesson .. and some more small, incremental gains in ball striking quality and consistency.

In my last lesson - we were working on a better shoulder turn back and through, what they in GolfTec-land refer to as "shoulder bends". On the backswing the goal is to get the hands deeper and for me a bit higher, with your back and trail shoulder blade (right, for me) facing the target; on the downswing the goal for me is to extend the follow-through and then feel like the lead (left for me) shoulder is working up then away from the target.

Once I started to get it (well... a little bit) ensuing shots with the same club started flying higher and further, and really close to the target line .. yea!!

So let's see if can continue this positive trend over the Winter and into next season, amiright?!?

Fascinating garage session this evening, testamony to how your body will react to different match ups.

Was struggling with an overdraw/hook. Counterintuitively, keeping the face more closed/square in the backswing got me hitting straight shots and even some small fades.

Assuming my body intuitively didn't want to hit it way right and compensated by swinging in-to-out enough to make the ball stay left.

It's amazing how time of day, routine or just mental fatigue/awareness can impact normal motion and more.

I am a big morning person. Up early, feel great and can get moving quickly. I have always played my best golf then. Make me play late in the day or practice and I'm useless. My body just doesn't react well or at least the same way it does in mornings.

Another good practice sesh this afternoon .. def seeing improvement in ball striking quality and a little bit better, too, in target line consistency / dispersion.

Met up with a friend and we played some target challenges and wedge distance challenges - stuff I normally do anyway when I practice but it was fun to make a game of it against a friend.

Then to the putting green to see who could get closer to the hole, two tries per hole then we changed holes and distance .. and without rolling your ball through all the goose poop that showed up on the practice greens! 😄😄

I did the Peter Cowen exercises this morning. Later today after the rain move thru northern Georgia I will go to the practice green

Played golf for over 50 years until my health and business calendar reduced my time to less then 5 rounds a year. Then 4 years ago I retired, changed my diet and lifestyle, lost 100 pounds and got back on the course. Its been a struggle but things are getting better.

Picked up a 3 tiered hitting mat and a pop out basket a month or so back. Usually hit 60-90 15ft chip shots to the basket in the backyard between calls or afterwards 3-5 days a week. Trying to work on consistency and tempo. Currently hovering around 30% on avg into the basket.

So I tried a new swing feel today in practice. I recorded it and added it to YouTube, so I could add it onto here, but I can’t get it to upload. So I will try again in another post. It is my first swing ever uploaded, and I am very nervous to share. I have been working on keeping the club head outside my hands in takeaway, and then dropping my club in downswing to stop coming over the top. This feel I exaggerate in my practice swing really helped. It really squared up my divots, and added some carry distance. So before the exaggerated rehearsal, I was landing my 9 iron just short of the 152 yard pole, and after I was flying it well past. But my ball flight was noticeably stronger and much straighter. It was a huge game changer. I still need to work on my camera angle, and hit the gym I didn’t know how big my stomach has gotten 😂

So my swing still needs some work, but it is night and day different from where I started. I’m still a little steep in the down swing, but I am definitely on the right path.

I wouldn't worry too much over posting your swing on here, but I do understand how scary it can be. I was terrified worse over doing audio, I can't stand to hear my voice on tape.

Hopefully the new swing thoughts will continue to show good results. You've put in a lot of time to improve your game and we're all rooting for you.

Looking for practice ideas for indoors. It’s all snow and cold until June or a planned exodus from snow capped peaks.

I’ve found my wife’s ruggable rugs mimic green speed fairly well so I’m putting… daily.

Thoughts?? I probably just need to find an indoor facility of some sort.

If you have room inside, make swings with an iron.  Don't have to be fast swings, and it's preferable if they are slo-mo.  Use a full length mirror if you have one, or set up your phone down-the line and face-on.  Once you see what your swing looks like, you have a basis for making changes.

Working on putting is a great idea; with a surface that is similar to speed of your normal greens is even better.  Try focusing on face path as well.  Can you roll a ball on a 4-foot metal ruler without it falling off before the end; hard to do, but if you work on it all winter, you should have better face control when you hit the course next spring.

Again if you have room, get a small mat and some Almost Golf Balls (you can use real balls if you have a place where you won't break anything 😄) and practice chip shots into a basket; make it challenging!.  This is great for honing your technique and feel for various shots.  There are many techniques available on YT, but if might be worth a review of your swing and short game by a local pro so you can focus on the areas that the pro suggests.  However, you can check out the various methods and pick what you think would work best for you.  Having done both, I will always lean to a pro's advice... less to unlearn later after trying to do it myself.  🤣

Best of luck, and I feel for you as I have shoveled my driveway twice this week!!

Just wanted to meet the range again. A0C4D21F-2C6A-4766-8394-2657B2F5B251.jpeg.b2f7054897bf708da0a8347d83e7cf2f.jpegI know that Ian was horrific but Nicole was no picnic, either. This is a left over from her visit.

I hit lots of pitch and chip shots, some short irons, then 3 5 woods and 3 of my new “3” wood which is a 4 wood head on a 3 wood length shaft. It was the winner. Same launch as the 5, 7 yards more carry and 12 with the roll out 207 average - just what  looking for. Hit 3 nice drives and went to the trap - that Ping Glide 3.0 Eye 2 grind makes those trap shots so much easier for me. I hit a dozen or so, all out, all on the green, all in 2 putt distance, several in one putt range and the last in tap in distance. So happy with that.

Our fairways are way too tight for that club right now. So I switched to the SCOR 56 and hit some ridiculous good chips with it - just randomly going to balls laying around whether they lay - holes the last one. Went to the putting green and rolled it well. The cooler, dryer weather has let them shave the greens. They are some firm and fast right now.

Hoping you all can make it to Florida soon.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

40ish something degrees and a bit of a North wind so why not hit the range to keep working on drills? Couple of warm layers plus regular, not winter golf, gloves actually didn't feel too restricting.

Kinda feel like I've got a little momentum going, so wanna try to keep it going before real Winter sets in and shuts us down around here.

Started out and finished off with some putting; always changing position and target.

Had a constant left miss with the PW, but I mean really consistent like most of the balls I hit left landed within a pretty tight circle... (..think I have an idea where it's coming from, but have another lesson on Tuesday so will ask my instructor about it!)

Then on to the 8i which was better; then hit a couple of 7Ws pretty well (off of a mat, though); LW and 54 were ok-ish for distance but had some serious left-right issues; and then tried to work on the driver some but today seemed to be one of those uhuh-not-happening days.

So typical practice session = some good with some yeah that still needs more work...

Spent a little time in the garage hitting a wedge today, trying to work on my stance and rotation.  Started with little chips and gradually worked my way up to full swings.

Was striking it pretty good, until I didn't and took a divot.  On the rug 😬.

Funny side note: While typing in the word "divot" my phone tried to autocorrect to "divorce," which might be my next topic once my wife sees the rug!

Small victories, am I right?  Funny thing, in the past few minutes I just got my new hitting mat delivered...this all could have been avoided!!

Well now you have a mat to cover the hole. Win win.

This happens to be one of my Dad's favorite stories to tell at Christmas.  "Have I ever told you about the year Tim got a living room carpet for Christmas?"  This was after I got a "little steep" with my PW at my parents house...  😬

I like to spend more time on the course working on my game than at the range, however I seem to be at the range a bit more in the past 2-3 years, anyway today I was practicing R&B, rhythm and balance.... always something to work on eh?
