What/How Did You Practice Today?

went to the range last night to work on my 3 Wood and 5 Wood.  I feel that I can hit those a mile on the range, but get me on the course and I'm clueless.  I was working on just focusing more on my tempo to make sure that I don't hurry through my swing and thus topping them.  It was interesting, plus it seems as though the ball went further.  Hoping it translates to our next round.

On average  used the fairway wood 1-2 twice per round and Driver 11-13 time per round

some rounds I have not used a fairway wood  and used a hybrid to reach green on par 5

Started using the hybrid last year and ditched the 7 wood and feel its more versatile

Cant hit the high cuts that I could do with 7 wood

Fade goes lower than 7wood but still same distance

for the draw - prefer the hybrid

The combo of the longer length shaft and high loft did not make it easy to hit a predictable draw with the 7 wood  for me

When your 17yo comes home from work and says he wants to go to the range, you throw your clubs in the trunk and head to the lighted range.

Worked on driver some more, always a work in progress. I feel like I’ve been reverting back to my fake body turn so I spent a lot of time working on shoulder turn. I also spent some time helping Jake straighten out his driver - ball more forward in his stance and standing a little further back did wonders for him. He remarked afterward that he still feels like he’s short with little kid irons and sets up that way, and hasn’t gotten comfortable with his newer irons and driver as a result. Just something that’ll get better with more time on the range and the course.

We also worked on wedges, trying to see who could come closest to the 50 and 100 yard markers then spent some time hitting punch shots.

Feeling more confident on the course

Synposis of what i been working on the last 2 months

Tee ball  reliable driver swing. Take out one side of the fairway  in my case Fade

Approach shots middle of the green with my irons /hybrids. Stay with what I got that day whether it be a fade/draw

Aim for the flag inside 110 yards with my wedge

Short game

Develop

a reliable chip and run stroke

a reliable lob from 30-50 yards

a reliable thump out from Greenside  bunker

develop a routine to read and stroke

breaking putts

long putts

be solid inside 5 feet and make sure my eyes see the path properly for short putts

Worked on wedges again today. Feel is starting to come back now that I've dedicated more time to it. I'd be lying if I said that being picked for the Indi wedge test didn't add some extra motivation to working on that part of my game. I'm not a fan of taking full swings with my 58 degree wedge, so I'm mostly working with a lot of partial swings on the wedges, and full swings really only being used with the 50 degree.

Well today I tried out my NEW driver 😇

Mizuno STz with my old smoke black shaft and I've not done any analysis of swingweight length or anything, I decided to put it together and see what happens but I think it's about 45inch and feels smooth when I swing. I've hit 10 balls with it and baby the 10th was crushed straight-ish down the middle with a penetrating level flight that went on and on strange for me, I'm normally up and down with little level flight so thrilled 😁 so hopefully I'm making the STz my gamer..

I’m a hacker who loves nothing more than to change how I play, be that grips shafts and heads its all fair game lol…

Typical swing work today but also implemented some fast driver swings. With my new swing changes on going, I wanted to check on my speed. First swing was a paltry 98 mph. I then hmph'd, and eventually got up to 116. best hitting whiffles was 112. Now, did the changes take affect on these fast swings? Ill need to video next time I can to see.

Got a lesson on my iron swing   I have been drawing the ball but really not the proper way.  I rolling my arms to much and really baby hooking the ball.  Instructors set me more square and stronger left hold on the club and I was hitting more powerful draws that did not hook 10-30 yards. But 1-5 yards   Like the pros do. Really weird feeling but I know it works on the course cause I tried it.
It  feels like I’m swing and hitting ball  to right field but it ends up square right at the pin.   Feels like I’m aiming for the trees to the right and curving the ball away from them trees and it ends up in the green

it’s crazy mindset cause I’m not really aim to get in the green I’m aiming to curve to get out off trouble it that makes sense

i think I prefer the fade ( if I can get back ) cause it felt I was aiming at my target rather than aiming away from some trouble

I’d been saying for a few weeks I need some dedicated practice time to get more comfortable and confident with my new JPX923 HM irons (6-GW).  Because of the heat and recent oral surgery, I’ve had limited range sessions but have played a few 9 hole and a couple 18 hole rounds.

I feel pretty decent with the 8i-GW but getting similar but different kind of misses compared to old irons.  Some of the misses are far right pushes, others are pull draws.  Getting my hands consistently set at the top of the backswing needs….better consistency.  In general I’m 100% sure ball placement needs to be 1-2” more forward in my stance, which is 1-2” forward of center.  I also need my hands a little forward of the club head.

I did 2 range sessions today.  The first late morning, I hit GW, 9i, and 7i, and I would hit 5 balls each, then the next club, then the next.  I did this about 5 times.  At the end, I hit my new Ping 430 Max 5h and 7w.   Overall results were kind of mixed.

Then I went home, cooled off and ate lunch.  Then back to the range and sequenced my PW, 8i and 6i.  Was having better results.  6i has been my most challenging, but it was better.  Then sequenced by hitting 3 balls each for a few rounds.  Felt I was figuring things out so then sequenced hitting 8i, 7i and 6i, one ball each.  I’m feeling I need the 6i about 2” forward of center and each ensuing shorter club slightly less forward.  At the end, and pretty tired, I hit my new Ping 430 7w and 4/5w.  I’ve have very minimal time with the 4/5w and although tired, was hitting it really well.

Still a work in progress and may do a similar set of sessions tomorrow.  Today the range was set up on the mats which are really good mats and allow 100% focus on the swing, and eliminates other issues.

Range session today. Only thing I was really working on was trying to get this !#$#-ing hybrid going. I slowed down my swing and was making better contact but was pulling left consistently. Experimented a little bit with how I've been setting up on the ball, different weight distribution and shifting my hips around some.

Likely my last post for a while  There's a lot of swings out there and I dont really own a swing

I own a setup and tempo that natural for my "swings"

working on my "swing"  for lack of a better word --> maybe golf motion instead of swing?

Short game i feel centered along my spine and  swing is initiated at the spine or arms and  the arms are passive or active depending on the stroke  Legs are for stability and centered

Long game- I feel like "body swing" pivot off either my right or left leg

My suggestion is to setup with the face square.  I saw a video or post a while ago that talked about hybrids and how they force people to setup closed with them which causes them to go left.   Use the grooves on the face and not the topline to setup;  it will look open to you.

Absolutely! At his clinics he told me the key for me - and keeping in mind that each student gets their own individual swing key - was after making a much fuller turn back, to really emphasize the arms coming down and powering the swing .. *then* the body joining in...

Practiced at the NKGC range and practice green today:

Range: Warmed up with wedge shots, followed by 6H, 9W, 4W and Driver. For the 4W and Driver, I foot sprayed the face to work on face strike. For each club, picked boundaries to represent expected dispersion (wider for driver and progressively narrower to 6H).

Practice green: Practiced pitch shots of 5 to 20 yards (LW from fringe and SW from rough) to various pins, putting out some of the longer ones. Then did ladder drills with the LW from the fringe first progressively longer followed by progressively shorter shots. Practiced long lag putts (my putting distance control needs work).

My guess is you probably take too long of a backswing and go oops that’s too much and end up decelerating and then have to early extend to hit the ball and end up thinning it. Then you get scared of that and don’t take enough club or big enough swing and then feel the need to rush and get quick and then chunk comes in.

Probably some other swing flaws s in there that don’t help these other issues when trying to take a partial swing, like rotation not matching swing length, hanging back on the trail leg.

Still working on my Iron game trying to really dial in what club i need at what time like for me right now im getting about 13 yards difference in my full shots where i struggle is when i have to take some off i dont know what happens i freeze in my back swing and almost always chunk it or thin it so im working on being more comfortable taking half and 3/4 swing shots

With the requisite disclaimer that I'm not a teaching pro nor do I play one on TV...

What works for *me* is to take the one more club and grip down ½ inch or even a full inch, depending, and make a full/ full-ish swing.

YMMV of course!

Making off speed swings on clubs longer than wedges is hard - especially for a regular recreational amateur.

Swing work again. Had my monthly check in lesson and here were the points to work on:

Takeaway, have hands come straight back down the line vs going out away from my body.

At top, arms pull straight down

Also at top, instead of shifting down and dipping my head and losing posture (causing me to stand up to make contact), feel lead knee turn out and push off the back heel of lead leg. It feels strange which means I must be doing the new move correctly. Have to do it very slow.

Follow my journey to enjoying golf and going low
