What/How Did You Practice Today?

Your hands are too high at address. You have too much weight in your heels.

In your takeaway you stand up (not good) you me left shoulder should be moving down and towards the ball and the right leg losing flexion as the left knee gain flexion.

You roll the club way open and behind you. Since you are using the tour striker ball watch the videos on their site on proper drills. And this is part of why you are cupping as I mentioned earlier.

The standing up and rolling of the arms gives you no choice but to lift the arms and get the club over the line.

Thank you.

Skipped warming up yesterday, and hopped into a sim round. Golf gods displeased with my arrogance gifted me with a case of the shanks. Slogged through the round never quite finding it.

After the round, I took my sand wedge and practiced the 9-to-3/L-to-L drill. Focusing on taking my club back, locking my hands/wrists in place, and then turning through the ball getting my weight to the left. This drill helps a ton on my angle of attack and a more consistent face angle. Probably always need to warm up with this drill, and need a million more reps till its second nature.

Also rolled some putts on the PuttView, 15/18 from 4-6ft and then 3ft star drill for 30ish putts.

Warmed up to low 30's so I was able to head out to the barn and get that ole heater flowing. Got warmed up to close to 50. Started gentle chips and then started full swings on my 8 iron, then my 7 iron. Trying to concentrate on a consistent hit. I'm trying to focus on a specific dimple, center top. First 4 shots were a bit erratic. I believe I was reacting to the previous shot. 1st was low but center. #2 high and toe. #3 and 4 again reacting to the previous. But I did see some positives in 5-10.  I need to keep at it obviously, but hey, I've still got at least 2.5 months before the first course even thinks of opening.

On my 7 iron my first 3 were somewhat off, but not really horrible. The rest showed improvement.  Lots to work on still but also enjoying the journey. At least as best you can in the winter.

you have jumped right in, good for you, are you thinking of getting some lessons? Might be good to get someone to take a look before you hit the course. Always good to check grip, stance, path etc, just a tuneup.

Went to the sim at Golf Galaxy (discussed at length in the Good Morning thread) and hit drivers for almost an hour. I was trying out new equipment, but also working on converting a push into a baby draw. Occasionally I succeeded.

Nah, I am not a lesson guy. I have a pro that will take a look at some stuff but lessons for me are not productive. I only go for outside help when I get stuck or just want confirmation that I am where I need to be. In fairness this is my first off season from playing in almost three years.

As part of my practice of late, I am working on my fitness level. Mostly core work with situps, planks and side to side motions with weights.

I did get a chance to head to the range the last couple of days and was just working on commitment to the shot. I'm really happy with my ball contact at the moment and I am finishing my golf swings, which I know will pay off when I play next. (Likely in about 8-10 days).

I finish off my 5 weeks in the desert on Saturday, then 3 days drive home and we will see what the weather is like once I'm back before I head to the course for a game. I managed 12 games on my holiday and played really well overall. Really excited about what 2024 holds in store!

Cheers,

Mike

Day 14 (26 Jan 24) - Played at Minnesott today with my son (temps in the 70's - whoo, hooo!).  Played okay, rolled putts with decent leaves.  Iron play okay, driver and fairways were king today.  Have to say the pre-shot routine of slowing to check at P2 before making the swing has produced more consistent iron strikes.

Got to the range this morning. It was misting, fog, damp, cool, and had to hit off the mats, but what fun it was to actually be outside and to swing and hit some balls. Really didn't care how it looked, just wanted to feel like a golfer again even in late January.

Took the cobra blade to practice last night and rolled some putts on the PuttView. Was 10/18 from 4-6ft, and then spent awhile just working on 3ft putts. Finding the blade to be much more sensitive to setup than my 009 mini, but the feedback on mishits is greater. Differences I’m finding in setup is lower hand position, lead shoulder slightly closed to the hole, and face setup looks almost open at setup. I think it’s good practice, and things I should be thinking about more with the 009 even if it feels easier to roll, could help my consistency.

I went out to the range yesterday for some Mevo testing and was able to get some good practice in along the way.

I started out by warming up with some chips and pitch shots just to loosen up a little bit and work on accelerating through the ball.

I set the Mevo up for a range competition to start out and created another person for me to compete against then set the challenge for an 80 yard shot. The results were pretty good, out of ten total shots I scored within the 50 point range on nine of them. My one miss was a 91 yard slightly bladed shot.

Once that was done, I moved on to a full swing session just to get an idea of distances throughout the bag. I can't say this was great as I was contacting the ground before the ball regularly. The main positive I got out of all the bad shots was seeing a slight uptick in swing speed that has been missing since my foot injury.

For comparison here's my first ever session with the Mevo

Screenshot_20240107_150551_FSGolf.jpg.fed327d8437809a56603886f45224951.jpg

This is from yesterday

Screenshot_20240126_174601_FSGolf.jpg.4b5852ce10fb50a5902adee2cc98c196.jpg

There's still a lot of work to be done, but I'm feeling positive right now in how my swing is trending.

One thing I noticed yesterday was I needed to work on strengthening my grip. I looked down and noticed it was slightly weak to neutral as I could only see part of one knuckle on my lead hand. I moved it to where I saw two knuckles.

Another thing I worked on was a feel I saw on a Crossfield video where you feel like you're pushing your right back pocket toward the target on the backswing. I used this feel the last time I played and saw good results and unfortunately didn't focus on it until my last two swings with the 3 wood, but did see better results. I feel like it helps keep me from swaying and helps me get into my lead side in the follow through.

Upper 30's and dry today, so I was able to do some Super Speed maintenance and driver swings with the PRGR. Its been a month or so since I've swung a driver and several since I've used the sticks so I took it slow today. Felt good to get outside and make some swings however.

Day 15 (27 Jan 24) - Shifted drill focus today - worked with 4h on 20-25 yd bump and runs for work around the greens.  Have 3 pins set up in the backyard that are 20 - 25 yds apart.  Of course yard grass is not fairway grass, but still gives a good approximation and forces focused accuracy.

Got out in the garage for the first time in two weeks yesterday. Low 40s was very comfortable, much better than the 14-18 degrees I saw in there last week.

My Stack training has been pretty lackluster this offseason but I was pleased to see some speed start to come back. I then hit way too many 6 irons but am making strides there. My focus is to get more knee bend in my setup, which seems to help me stay a little more centered with less sway as I can turn into my hip in the backswing and not move my mass outside of it.

Probably try to get back into a Stack routine but it's been good to have a little break from swings. My ailing lead wrist is feeling better and I seem to still be making progress on my swing even with fewer overall swings. Most important part is keeping the rust off, of which I seem to be doing successfully.

I practiced indoors today. I have an indoor putting mat made by Birdie Ball. I practiced pace and touch as I have a tendency to run my putts past the hole. This proves problematic when you have to put down hill and in some cases down hill w/ break. I usually putt about 300-500 balls per session into a Puttout putting trainer.

Back out to the barn to hit balls into the net. Continue to work on consistency. Also trying to work on maintaining my spine angle throughout. I find I have a tendency of lifting up before impact which causes me to a bit thin. Also rearranged the net area a bit to find a spot where I can hit my 5 metal on a full swing.

Damn @Arnie C, 300-500 putts. Above and beyond the call of duty for sure. Way to go. Also welcome to the forum group. Hope you gain as many insights as you can handle. I know I've gained a lot of knowledge from these folks. And who says you can't teach an old fart a few new tricks. Again, welcome.

Thank you Dweed. I break it into 4 - 30 sessions. Usually about 80 putts per set, sometimes more depending on how I feel. I’ll take like a 15 break in between sets. I’ll put on a replay of one of the majors on YouTube so the time goes by watching and putting. I also collect putters so I switch out to break monotony.
