What/How Did You Practice Today?

So finally had my lesson after four weeks of rainouts.  I really like this new teacher and will go after to the lessons session to post a lot more about the lesson.  Bottom line I'm totally past the new glasses issue.  I was hitting 7 iron after 7 iron after 7 iron, high and straight, high and baby draw, high and fade on demand  - By the end of the lesson I could hit a high 1 yard draw or a high 1 yard fade nearly every time I tried - My teacher said, "it's easy to see from your swing live and on video that you were once a very good golfer and are still a pretty good one. You aren't very far from very good again if you want to be. "

It was a lot of fun to hit balls on the range today is all I'm saying. 🙂  I can't wait to get out and do it again tomorrow.  I can't wait to start playing again either.  Sadly it looks like a tropical storm/hurricane is going to disrupt that.  😞

Being pretty busy in Florida for work, I didn't even bother to bring my clubs. Figured I wouldn't have time to play. I did bring my putter with me because it was luckily short enough to fit in my suitcase. I ended up spending 20-30 minutes each night putting around the various hotel rooms, finally dedicating myself to get used to the claw grip. Turns out having an actual, consistent preshot routine is helpful? Who would have guessed that?

Long story short, I got comfortable with the claw grip but didn't like the way my current club felt after awhile. I'm not 20 anymore and using a 33" putter is just not comfortable these days for my back. Went to my fitting earlier before my flight back home and found a new club to replace it. Every time I go in looking at putters I want to like a blade, and today I walked out having ordered a larger than I already had mallet. I'm pretty excited about having a full fitted bag on order. Would never have guessed a few of the options that worked, so definitely glad I spent the time to get a proper fitting.

Very windy/cold but excellent range session. I think the best all season.  I saw this video from Monte Scheinblum on Instagram the other day and it really clicked for me: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci5VWrbJ4BV/

To summarize, his suggested downswing feel is to point the butt of the club at 3 o'clock (9 o'clock for lefties) on the downswing without dropping your trail shoulder.

My No. 1 swing fault my coach has been harping on me about is that I shallow the club by dropping the trail shoulder and spinning my shoulders. This gets me coming way too inside-out, and leads to massive hooks when I'm off. I've tried several things, including feeling my hands coming more left to start the downswing, but nothing really seems to have helped. I still tend to drop the right shoulder and spin.

For whatever reason (opposing forces, perhaps), trying to feel the butt pointing at 3 o'clock got me hitting nice straight/tiny draws with the four clubs I brought to the range. Absolutely beautiful. The guy next to me even commented on me just hitting 5 iron after 5 iron straight, high and long.

Something to continue to work on as I move into the offseason. Really felt good today.

... You probably are aware of this but just in case and for others reading this, drills and exercises designed to address flaws will almost always cease to work and even cause problems if you stick with them. This excellent drill is designed to stop several flaws and swinging to 3 with the butt is a great start. But sooner or later a better player will start to over do it and then you may need to change to 2 and as you progress to 1 where it should end up. Eventually the goal is to stop using the drill all together and just swing but of course it is a process. I also love Monte saying it is about "feel and not real" and truthfully so is the majority of what we do with our game. Like Speith coming over the top with his practice swing that is feel and not real once he actually hits a shot.

This last 6 months of practicing just chipping (with 60/56 Wedges) and then practicing putting from 3-5 feet. Has paid off significantly.  I'm to the point now that if I missed a green (which I normally do), the confidence that I will either chipped in or get it close.  And then putting, the fact that if you chipped to that range of 3-5 feet that you will make that putt is such a stress free environment. Specially since off the tee is not an issue, fairway finder 71% of the time.

Next is to find a routing for my 8-7-6 irons, need to find the same consistency I have found in my short game, it will be amazing if I can get that GIR average 20-30% to up to 40-50%  would be a monumental improvement.

Oh most definitely. I like the feeling for now, especially on the range, because it's the polar opposite of my "stock" swing/flaw where the trail shoulder drops and I fly open, pulling the butt more toward 11 o'clock than anything else. Eventually I'll probably swing too much to the other direction and have to reign it in. 😀

... Nice. I hear so many talk about a drill or feel they had at the range or for several rounds that worked great and then it just "stopped working". But as you stated so well "Eventually I'll probably swing too much to the other direction and have to reign it in." But until then, ya ride it til it bucks you!

Spent some time in the basement hitting a few different clubs into the net and trying different feels, positions, and tempos.  Fascinating to me how these changes affect different clubs in different ways.  Not always sure how to process that information but it does make for a lot of mental notes.

I'll get some of the top tracer data up a little later, but spent some time on the irons today and wow. Found a small change that made a world of a difference and was flushing irons effortlessly. I am going to go back again tomorrow and see if the same feeling yields the same results, but my oh my am I a happy man now!

As you know I am a lefty golfer, but I am right handed. During my takeaway normally I would always feel as though my right hand commanded the start and much of the swing. I think it just got me out of position at the top and kinda over rotated so the swing was long and often lead to a trappy over the top which caused some less then stellar results.

So the change I made was simply the feeling of the left hand starting the swing and then letting my natural movements take over. I should take some shots of the irons. Flushed! A few a bit thing, but way less curvature, distances the same and overall just great strikes.

I'm the opposite. Natural lefty but play right handed. I've noticed for me that my body responds to different dominant side feels on different days. One day it works to focus on the right hand, next day it's a left shoulder feeling that works. It's occasionally infuriating. I have noticed that for some unknown reason, I don't have much success with any thoughts about manipulating my left hand/wrist, so I end up working backwards to get rid of that wrist cupping. It's weird how the brain works sometimes.

The last couple of days I've been getting out in the yard working with the Swing Jacket, taking swings without a ball. I have wanted to put the net up, but windy conditions have kept me from it.

Mostly, I've been out taking divots and observing where the club contacts the ground. I'll find a piece of grass or a leaf and see where I'm contacting the ground both front to back and side to side. My results have been encouraging, I'm seeing more ball then turf contact and less shanky shots. Today I did hit 5 whiffle balls and they were good.

Lately I've been too obsessed with golf swing and not just letting my body do the work and my game has suffered. The jacket just allows me to move through the ball and takes my mind off all the club manipulation. I'm planning on continuing this for a while to build a feel and try to keep it simple.

Jason, I bolded and underlined the most important parts of what you wrote. It is great to just keep these simple, easy to understand thoughts while practicing, as it truly does lead to great results when you do get back out and play just using things which feel natural to you.

I haven't posted much lately, as work has been pretty hectic and crazy due to staffing issues due to other's being out for medical reasons. I have played the last couple weekends, at different courses than usual, and just went with the idea of hitting a variety of shots and not keeping scores. One course actually played with just irons and none longer than a 4 iron.

I did not go with the idea of using what would be the correct club off a tee, or what a normal shot would dictate, just to get through that round practicing all the clubs in the bag at various distances or situations. I wanted to get ready for an outing we had this past Monday for my old boss, who retired at the end of 2019, then suddenly and tragically passed away in November of 2020 with none of his plans or goals of retirement fulfilled. Sadly, he was the same age as I am.

I did play in that event on Monday, although it was a cold and rainy day and actually had my best round of the year. +1 on a private club, that played about 6500 yards from the white tees, with 17 pars and a lone bogey where I missed a short par putt after initially missing the green with my approach, and then having a 5 footer with some left to right break to get that par.

It truly is more about feeling comfortable and confident that you can come close to the shot that you visualize before you actually pull the trigger and execute it while eliminating any bad thoughts and minimizing any mistakes or errors, as none of us really hit each and every shot perfectly.

Been trying to make some time practice what I can as we head into the off season. Lately I have been working to get 40 to 50 putts in focusing on set up and just the pendulum motion going (thinking about building my own gate). Then I have started up super speed training again and its is great to get the speed coming back along again. Now to keep that off all off season. Finally, today I tried that low point drill that was shared here a while back with two coins where you try to hit only the second one and miss the first. Got in a bit of a grove with pitch shot length swings. It was fun. I moved it forward and back in the stance too for various short game shots. Will have to keep that one in the rotation.

When you are doing the putting with a gate, I would suggest using different length stroke o help ensure you are starting all your putts online.  I personally find longer strokes are easier to get through the gate and struggle more with a stroke for a 5 footer.

I agree, when I can get flowing with the stroke it is much easier but I can't flow 5 footer
