My little paint fill project

So I was bored today. Just got off work from the course and the weather wasn't so nice so i decided to go home. I watched a video videoand thought hey paint filling looks pretty easy.... So I grabbed my older 60* wedge and decided to start messing around. I decided to do the number on the bottom cause if I mess up it won't matter cause it's always facing down anyways here's how I started....

 

- I first took my original wedge

 

 

- Then I used nail polish remover and a pocket knife to scrape out all the old black paint in the numbers

 

 

- Then I generously applied paint over the area (purple is sweet ok.....)Let it dry for a while

 

 

- Then wiped away the excess with nail polish remover and a rag

 

 

- Applied another coat (again more drying)

 

 

- wiped away the rest and Voila!!!

 

 

(It's a lot more colorful in person not sure what was up with my camera)

 

I believe it looks relitively nice and might have to do it to the titleist logo on the back.... I will keep you guys updated on the durability and such after washing clubs etc.

Thanks! I wanted to try on the bottom first see how it worked but I might do it to the titleist logo in the back now. Use acrylic paint pens or nail polish haha

If you want the best paint with the most colors available that lasts the longest, buy Tamiya X-Acrylic. They also offer translucents along with the standard solids. In all of the paints I've tested (Sharpie paint pens, Testors, Model Masters, Mr. Color, etc) Tamiya has lasted longer. Their color selection doesn't hurt either.

 

A few other tips:

 

Buy some needle tipped bottles an squirt the paint with. Always overfill the letters. A-West makes a quality needle tipped bottle.

 

Use a squigee when filling. Make said squigee from a piece of a cereal box that you cut out. Overfill the letters and then swipe them with the squigee. This removes any air bubbles you might have.

 

Let it dry as long as possible before wiping with acetone. Nail Polish remover works okay, but pure acetone works quicker and if you have different colors close together, you don't want to have to scrub, just make a quick swipe and go. Keeps colors from bleeding.

I get it at the local Hobby Town USA. Other Hobby Shops have it, but Hobbytown has the largest available local selection. If it's something I really need or want and they don't carry it, I order it from Tamiya direct.

I did my clubs with red, the red paintfill on the black finish looks pretty cool and red/black were my college and high school colors.

I do all of my stamping, paintfilling, refinishing, etc. Why send stuff out when I can do it at home? I'm doing my X-Forged vintage as I type. Rust is being stripped and I'm then trying out a new blackening product. Paintfill will be done as well in white and lime to match my theme, though I might throw in a little purple to go Joker with it.

Ace Hardware sells some. They're made by CH Hansen. I, however, have a little different set of stamps. Those work fine, but they're not as large as the ones I have, thickness wise. I use the larger ones and grind the backs flat so that I get a good flush hammer strike. I hit them 2-3 times most of the time 2. I also have a 4 lb. mini sledge I use so I don't have to hit them much. The more you have to hit them, the more opportunity you have of double stamping.

So after reading this thread, I decided to take this on...

 

You can see where I peeled the paint off too early, and since it wasn't completely dry, it pulled up, but I fixed that and it is drying now... I also filled in the alignment dots with blue...

 

I like this a lot since it matches my Mizuno irons, now I just need a new grip...

The dots can be done simply. You have to have one of the old headcovers though because Scotty changed thread he uses a year or two ago. He says to prevent fading, it's really because he doesn't want people doing just this. If you have one of the old headcovers, it's simple. There are 2 methods. 1. You bleach the dots out with ordinary bleach squirted onto them. The dye bleaches right out. The other is to use a dye remover. Same principle. Once they're white, you can either dye them or do like Breck does and color them with a sharpie. That's right, a sharpie. Then simply spray over them with Scotchbrite and you're good to go. As for changing the vinyl, you can do it a few ways. There is a glaze on top of the vinyl. You have to remove this glaze to get to where you can change it's color. I use acetone on my personal headcovers, which I also used to customize shoes and know how this works. You have to know what you're doing to remove it with acetone. The other is to use a vinyl safe deglazer. You can buy that by looking at horse saddle supply stores online. Don't have a direct link, but search for vinyl saddle deglazer. You remove the glaze with it. Then you have to use a vinyl color remover, again found at a saddle shop. Once you strip the color, find your color in a vinyl dye and hammer down with it. (You can bleach the dots back out if you get it on them, don't worry). Then you put a vinyl finisher over it and you're good to go. Do the vinyl first then the dots. I've done it on my personal headcovers and some for people before. There is a chance you could ruin the headcover if you don't take your time and practice (make sure to practice on something else before doing it to a headcover).
