So I have been wanting to do a little bit of "hand hammering" on a putter for a while, and I decided to go for a high polished torched blue with a hand hammered top line, neck and bumpers on this C62. I think all turned out great, but the corrosion all over the head has caused deep pitting over the entirety of the putter. It's the only thing that's keeping me from loving this putter.

attachicon.gifIMG_1478497344.419490.jpgattachicon.gifIMG_1478497585.896058.jpgattachicon.gifIMG_1478497597.763553.jpgattachicon.gifIMG_1478497608.913864.jpg

I think I'm going to have to settle for the dull sandblasted look because it roughs the surface up enough to mask the pitting

That looks great! Can you explain how the hammering process works?

Sure. It was kind of a leap of faith for me the first time I did it. In fact, I gave it a whirl on the Circa 62 because if it went horribly wrong it was already a rust bucket and learning would've been worth it.

There's really not a whole lot to it. The club head should be in a vice - I guess it doesn't have to - but I definitely recommend properly securing it for the majority of your hammering, particularly for your first time. I used my drill press vice (link below). Then you grab a ball peen hammer, the smaller the better for detail work, and start whacking away. I started kind of delicately just to see what the severity of impression would be - I discovered that you want to be more delicate when hammering a top line, because if you catch it on the face edge you're going to foul the face and your edges are going to look sloppy. When hammering a sole (like the counterfeit Monterrey) you can really go nuts. The good news is, if you make a mistake, you're just one swing of the hammer away from masking it.

There are going to be areas where it's just impractical to keep the head in the vise. In those situations I just put the head on my anvil and worked slowly.

Yeah, it's pretty simple stuff. Press pause often on the hammering and examine work. You can always hammer more, you can never unhammer

This style is my favorite, and led me to my gamer(s) which are a Scotty Cameron Studio Design 1 & 2. They both have the same purple torched finish and black paintfill, same specs, same grip, etc. I just go back and forth depending on which side my miss is on. (The 1/2 shaft of difference in offset make a difference in my little mind) The torched finish has worn, but I'm very cautious about dings - I worked way too hard reviving them to beat them up! And I'm pretty sure I won't pound 'em with a hammer either! ;)

This is the #1:

Love the murdered out paintfill. Very nice hammer work there too. The flange looks awesome. It's definitely more than a little nerve wracking for the first dozen or so hammer swings - especially if it's a piece you care about.

This is where I'd like to get my hammer game to at some point. I know he's a somewhat controversial figure (esp "across the street") but I've yet to see a putter out of him that I wouldn't proudly game.

Thanks for the kind words!

Tyson is definitely a prodigy, and I think that he will become one of the greats in due time.

I saw a pic of one of his putters with a cherry bomb stamped on it, and the letter F inside it. Anyone who plays golf with me will attest - I need an F-bomb putter in my life! :)

Here's the first Spalding TPM 12. I first refinished this last year, but due to a little neglect while moving, it needed to be redone. Older TPMs usually come with a top line alignment dot, but this one didn't when I got it. I stamped a line, but it didn't come out right, so i cleaned it up and now it rolls naked.

Black Oxide 3x burnished in with soft steel wool.

This one will be up for sale soon. It'll come with options of a red, blue,

Black or pink Cork Tree grip, and I can change the paint fill to match any of the grip colors as desired.

Very, very nice black ox work there! Super even finish, looks terrific!

What where you using to stamp the dot? I've found that, especially for things like sight lines/alignment dots, using the drill press is a waaaaaay more reliable option. I didn't have one until recently, but generally they can be found in decent shape on Craigslist for $100-$500 depending on size/condition/age/etc. and my little $250 investment has been well worth it.

Good to know, I actually stamped a line sight line using a chisel, and it was actually straight and aligned very well with the cross of dots, but the i couldn't get the edges to look right along the top line and looking down on it just wasn't pleasing to the eye.

Just an update on the hammer thing - this guy got some heat tonight, and black paint fill. I stopped the heat just before the bronze started to turn blue/purple thinking that the bronze would best show the hammered texture. By accident, I figured out that wiping some black paint on the hammer area gives it some patina look as well.

Another M2 body. Dropping soleplate/face inlay back in totally stock w no changes after polishing and painting cherry dots. IMG_1478766252.832529.jpg

Ps the blue around the cross alignment aid is intentional.

Also, having recently switched from standard propane torch to MAPP gas and occasionally o2, the difference is staggering---in a very good way.

Thanks - it's sort of addictive! I did a tpm #7 last night, and took it up the neck (hammered everything but the face and top line). I thought about going purple or blue, but I think this bronze color is perfect for the hammered finish.IMG_1478804549.873451.jpgIMG_1478804562.898632.jpgIMG_1478804571.383080.jpg

I do too. Short of finishing it with cerakote/polymer there's just not a whole lot you can do with that 6061 "aircraft" aluminum unless you have an electroplating setup in the garage.

There's something I'm trying to accomplish in a torched finish, and I'm curious to hear feedback from y'all... perhaps RB7 could chime in and share some thoughts on how this can be achieved.

I've owned, cumulatively, no less than 2 dozen Bettinardis and still have 7 or 8 of them knocking around in my putter closet. One of my absolute favorite finishes ever is the beautiful look of their Queen Bee line of putters.

Pic for reference: IMG_1479135820.796527.jpg

Now, clearly, this is not a torched finish. In fact, the Bettinardi webpage calls it a savannah blue PVD finish. I'm not setup to PVD in my garage, and polymer tends to be a 1 color finish for me, unless I'm taping off sections to do multiple colors, but fading like that isn't something I can accomplish with a poly style finish.

I think the closest I can come (to the concept, I'm not trying to replicate the QB finish) - I believe - is through a torched finish. That Monterrey I recently did has given me a few ideas relative to this.

My idea, essentially is to basically torch it twice or maybe even three times. So, first torch is evenly heated, except in the area where I'm looking for the highlights-where I'll spend some more time, then after it's cooled, I'll very carefully polish the whole putter again except the area(s) that I want to stay the color they are, once I've polished then it's time to clean and prep for second round of torching. The second round of torching (if final round) I'm going to try to do very evenly to my desired finish color, with the understanding that my highlighted areas my get darker with more heat, so bronze -> purple, purple->blue, etc...

I'm working on a select fast back right now, that I'd like to have some kind of gradient effect coming out of the cavity and a two toned face. So here's what it looked like after torching once and polishing.

And after torch #2:
