Practice Drills

Practice makes perfect. So thus in golf. There are different practice drills in golf that will help your skills up the ante. Such drills are very easy to do and some can be done at home. With dedication and lots of practice these drills will make you good to better in no time. The following drills are designed to teach you related concepts and help you get the most out of your practice time. Each drill is designed to improve your golf swing mechanics and/or give you an idea about the swing itself, putting, driving and pitching.

1. Baseball Swing Drill. Baseball swing drill is a swing acceleration drill.

2. Stand erect and make several baseball-type swings with your golf club.

3. Notice the wrist and arm action.

Continue to swing as you bend over once you have reached the golf swing position.

Basic Golf Swing Drill. A good way to learn to swing a golf club. This drill provide you with opportunities that allow you to coordinate your arm swing with your body movement.

Take your address position and place the palms of your hands together.

1. Swing arms back with body turn.

2. Two thumbs up in line with shoulder tilt.

3. Turn and swing arms forward with body turn.

4. Two thumbs up in line with shoulder tilt.

Grass-cutting Drill. This drill is a nonstop swinging drill that helps you coordinate the timing of your arms, hands, and body when making the swinging motion. Your hands and arms swing the club as your body pivots.

Imagine that you are cutting grass with the clubhead.

Let the club swing back and forth without stopping. Make sure you complete the whole swing each time.

One-and-two Drill. The golf swing is one continuous and rhythmic movement that starts smoothly back, changes direction at the top, and then speeds up gradually to the finish/ the complete swing lasts from 2 to 3 seconds. You can swing at different tempos but you must always keep your swing in rhythm.

One-hand Putting Drill. One-hand putting drill will teach you to release the putter head properly and restore hand-eye coordination because you tend to forget putting mechanics and simply stroke it to the hole.

1. Pitch Drill. Pitch drill for those struggling to pitch in the air

2. Put your left hand in your pocket and swing the wedge with your right arm only.

4. Feel the clubhead pass your hand as it bottoms out.

5. Pretend you're on a putting green and hit the pitch.

Avoid taking a divot by properly using the bounce. Practice on a patch of closely mowed turf on your range.

Feet Together Drill. This drill improve timing, reduces swaying due to narrowed balance point, and promote good swing mechanics.

1. With feet together, an inch or 2 inches apart practice hitting the ball.

2. Swing slowly and concentrate on making solid contact with the ball.

3. Practice until you can hit a consistently good shot with your preferred tempo and rhythm.

4. Whoosh Drill. The whoosh drill is an acceleration drill that helps you hit the ball longer. The whoosh sound will give you the feedback on the speed of your swing upon impact.

5. Turn the club upside down and grip below the clubhead (shaft). Produce a swing and listen to the whoosh sound at the bottom of the swing or impact area. The louder the whoosh, the faster your swing.

Repeat the whoosh drill with the club in the normal golf swing position. Focus on hearing the club accelerate at the bottom of the golf swing.

First of all... Welcome from the Pacific Northwest!!  Glad you joined us.

All good drills, but practice doesn't make perfect... perfect practice makes perfect.  For beginner golfers I would recommend seeing a teaching pro, do drills while they are watching, and correct any mistakes.  If you do these drills with incorrect fundamentals, then you will have to "unlearn" bad habits later.  The only way to unlearn bad habits is to swing correctly until you make it the new habit.

Welcome

All the drills you mention are fine depending upon the issue that a player is trying to address.  I will trust my pro to let me know if one might work for me.  Thanks

Interesting that Pamala's first (probably only) post is to help us out with golf basics. Thanks. Even more interesting is that on the website (golfcreators.com) link provided; there are numerous articles-tips-lessons, etc all by one person... Chan Lim. Cleaver marketing eh?

I'm not being too skeptical am I? LOL

I think that Kenny and I were saying the same thing Plaid but you have spelled it out far better than we.  Of course we don't mind manufacturers or teaching pros on the forum, in fact we welcome them, but when the first and only thing that they post is about their product?  I'll tell you right now that if they are around and post and comment I will almost certainly try their product if its relevant to me.  I suspect everyone here is like that.  I've used any number of our advertisers in the past and right now there is one popping up on my screen, Blackwolf Run, that's making me positively homesick for Wisconsin. It remains my favorite place to play golf in the world.

Note to the author of this link: it might have given you more credibility had you used a different bogus handicap.  All of the guys here are avid golfers and many have single digit handicaps.  I doubt they are going to take advice from a 25.

I agree Rev.  The poster should have provided a little bit of info about themselves and the website.  It appears to me that the website directly targets new, beginner golfers and that is great.  There is some information that I feel is very helpful to this target audience.  If the poster had provided an introduction like new members do and then explained the purpose and goal of the website, then I think we would all appreciate their efforts.

I agree with Kenny. The first step golfers should make is seeing a teaching professional. Get their swing analysed and get the right fundamentals in place before any bad habits creep in.

I wish I'd done the same years ago and it wouldn't have taken me 20 years to fix swing faults and instead having to rely on compensations.

Thanks for answering Pamala -

I would still recommend that beginners find a pro and take live lessons rather than attempting to learn the game themselves.  But you get points for popping in and answering.

Yep!  Sounds like me too.  I thought I was smart enough to learn this simple game on my own.  Seems like I am still undoing the damage!

In over 50yrs playing I have taken 3 lessons but although I maintained a 5-9 hcp I never used the same swing two straight rounds. Now in my 70's I still have enough length to carry a 9 hcp from the men's normal tees and I will soon be an 8 hcp using just one swing.  I wish I had started using this swing yrs ago, and while most golfers would not be caught dead using my new swing (I was reluctant to use it until I spent a day actually learning it) I can only say if you are new to the game or have spent yrs hoping to feel confident over the ball, then give it a go.  My swing is largely based on the teachings of Jim Venetos with some personal modifications to make it feel more natural for my stature, etc.  Golf is fun again.
