Baseball and golf similarities

Hockey player here :)

I guess I look at it like this.  You can draw a lot of similarities from almost any sport.  Weight shift, hand-eye coordination, wrist movement etc.  Hell one of my favorite "tips" I've heard when trying to hit a draw was pretend you're trying to skip a rock across a pond.

As a hockey player though I played lefty.  I golf righty.  So very different movements and on opposite sides of the body.  I thought playing hockey lefty would help me with putting so bought a lefty putter.  It was one of the worst experiments I've ever tried.  I looked like a blind man trying to find an M&M on the floor.  So the sport definitely did not carry over in this instance.

As an athlete can you draw on previous sports and experiences to help you with golf?  Absolutely.  Should you be getting swing advice and tips by watching other sports?  Not really in my opinion.  If you want golf swing help watch golf swings.  If I want to learn how to fly a plane I'm not going to watch formula one racing just because they both sit in a cockpit.

I think Rev said it best though.  An athlete is an athlete.  Most athlete's are going to have an easier time picking up a different sport just because they are already athletic and have the body movement and hand-eye coordination to succeed.

@hckymeyer get in here lol [/quote

I played hockey for many years, I don't feel like there are many similarities between hitting a golf shot and striking a hockey puck, too many moving parts in the hockey shot. Like Hcky, played hockey as a right (right hand shot), and I do everything as a lefty, I think it had to do with holding he stick in your dominant hand.

Lefties are always in their Right Mind

Yup, growing all my friends though if you were right handed you shot righty. I was taught top hand should be your dominate hand since that's what controls everything

What side do you hit from in baseball?

A hidden transfer for me is putting and throwing. I look at the hole when I putt just as I looked at the corner of second base when I threw.

Yea I'm with y'all, in that both require hand eye coordination and some athletic ability. Depending on how we look at it, there are few or many similarities between different sports. Its always interesting to talk about to me though.

I do pretty much everything left handed, hockey was different because of stick handling.

I personally love setting the backswing like a baseball bat (super vertical).Than I drop it horizontal like a ball player hitting in the strike zone.Looks like a loop, but works well for me

That describes my swing in a nutshell of course. :)

I get the best of both worlds being a former hockey and baseball player. In terms of hitting the draw on an in to out plane, hockey is great. The descending blow into the puck and the finish all help with opening the hips for power. As for baseball, my strong right hand has led to many hooks and a lack of face rotation on many occasions. In college, I became a much better off speed hitter than I was in high school. I like to think that my ability to keep my hands back, even when my hips open, has helped create a lot of lag in my swing.
