How do I respond?

On a couple of occasions, some messages from some long time friends through other sites magically appeared in the corner of my screen.   Being an old timer and rather digital illiterate, I tried to respond, but all I did was to apparently erase them.   How do I go about responding to them, if I get some more.

 

To those friends, understand that I was not ignoring you, its just my illiteracy.

Well, I feel better knowing you didn't close it out and run away, saying damn, he found me.

 

it's the Chat feature and I guess depending on your computer settings it should pop up automatically in the lower right hand corner of your screen with a small area to type your reply in.   Does your company use Lync or any messenger app, or have you chatted online with a service rep with some company.  it works much like that.  

 

if I'm missing any tips, maybe some of the longer term guys here can chime in.   it's a neat feature, but I try not to use it too much unless it's a strictly personal comment that would be of no interest to anyone else.   But then there is also the PM feature for that as well.
