I wish my parents would have been able to afford competitive hockey for me as a kid but they couldn't so I just played open hockey still expensive but not as bad as a league

I hear you my dad wanted the same thing and so they made it work and I count myself lucky they could and hope to do the same for my kids if they want to. I was never very good but I enjoyed it for sure.

Sorry to hear that.  Hope it's a mild case, and you and your wife don't get it.

The couple we played with today went through it a few weeks ago.  She tested positive; had slight fever and headaches, that was all.  She's 54.  He never got it.  They both are tested at work.  She tested negative after 10 days, and played golf the next weekend, but was quite weak the first round or two back.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Hockey is much more expensive than golf... as someone who played at a high level and still does I am lucky to have connections, but $1000 for skates $1800 for sticks for a season and travel cost adds up... glad to have sponsorship for sure... but sticks that break at $300 a pop is getting out of hand...

Geez, I had no idea hockey sticks cost that much but, when I think about it more, they do have quite a bit of material in them.

That was the one advantage as a kid, never really broke them since my shot was lets say, about precision (aka weak). But thankfully skates where not too much yet, but I am sure they have gone up. I also remember it was about 2,000 a year just to be on the team to pay for ice time and this was just a smaller town based team. The bigger more travel based/higher level leagues can be even more. But thankfully much like golf there are levels of equipment to save a few buck as someone playing for fun now. But yeah hockey is not cheap at all.

Yeah they have been all carbon fiber for years now and probably have much the same R&D as golf shafts, just square not round. It actually interesting to see hockey sticks being marketed a bit like golf shafts now.  There is talk of kick point and how this releases, basically speaking to the torque and deflection of the stick as you take a shot, plus of course all different flexes. Some big time NHL players play a very flexible shaft for the better energy transfer, who cares if you break them when they are free. Like auto flex but for hockey sticks. Alex Ovechkin was one of them just look at the bend here.

My wife hates me since I do both 🤣... but I’ll have to post some pics of me playing... hockey sticks can be like long drivers vs fairway finders... you will find forwards like Ovi playing softer flex to help launch quickly but it’s timing as well... vs a big defenseman who plays a heavier stiffer flex... low kick points high kick points it’s no different than a golf shaft...

Not gonna lie, as much as I love hockey I was not too sad when my son decided he didn't want to progress up to the next level after playing as a 7 year old. He liked it, but it just wasn't for him. My friend's son plays travel hockey and the money is insane.

When I was playing roller hockey even that was decently expensive when considering league fees, equipment replacement like wheels & bearings, new sticks... golf almost seems cheap by comparison (sometimes).

That's just the tip of the iceberg. League fee fees as an adult are $1,100 a year per person. I play in 2 leagues one is invite only which luckly is free. My other team is sponsored so it helps the cost. Also have a travel tournament team we do 4-5 a year all over the country...  but playing hockey helps with the golf swing! 😄

Well, I tried the course I left my rangefinder at one last time. No one's turned it in. So someone in the area has a mint condition NX7 with a full battery. Hope they enjoy it 🙄

Back to using phone apps next season, since that always stays in my pocket. Or I'll look into a new watch since my Bushnell's battery doesn't even last a full 18 anymore.

What a shame. About 5 years ago I left a Nikon Coolshot at a private course - no one turned it in. Similar thing happened this past summer. my OW fell out of the cart on the way to the range. Nope. Nada - no one turned it in (fyi it had our name on the pinhigh sticker). . My wife and I generally find a half doz things on the course from covers to wedges and we immediately turn them into the Pro shop.

FYI I have a bright orange lanyard attached to my LRF - it's a little easier to spot when i leave it on the course.

FYI I have a bright orange lanyard attached to my LRF - it's a little easier to spot when i leave it on the course.

In this case it was just plain ol' forgetfulness... my car battery was dead so as I was popping the hood and getting my cables out, my buddy hopped into the cart to return it while I was getting everything ready to hook up to his battery for a jump. I always do a walk-around of the cart to check the basket, dash storage, etc. and I didn't do that so the rangefinder was stuck to the side of the cart. Totally not his fault, it's mine for being preoccupied with the dead battery. It is what it is.

That stinks. Put one on your Christmas list and maybe Santa will bring you a replacement.

I thought about that! Not gonna lie. But honestly, I'm OK with going back to a watch or an app. Believe me - with my game, a few yards difference with slope on a rangefinder vs 18 Birdies is NOT going to make all that much of a difference to my scoring in the long run 😄

Appreciate the offer, Foz! I'm going to wait until after the holidays to do anything, depending on what shows up Christmas morning in the form of presents or gift certificates. No golf for at least 3 months for me most likely living in MA, so no rush on my end.
