Long story short, there is a tremendous history of cancer in my family...all four of my grandparents, my father at age 60, three aunts, and now my sister. As my sister was being treated, she had genetic testing performed and they discovered a gene mutation that was a likely culprit for her cancer, and my Dad's. Her medical team advised my Mom, brother and I to get screened accordingly, so I've been waiting 3 weeks for the result of a genetic screening for that particular gene mutation, and 83 others...basically the full panel. The verdict came in yesterday...mutation free! It was a weird feeling waiting to hear if I might be doomed, or could expect a long "normal" life. And, how would I respond to the news if I was positive...go uber healthy to do everything to fight it off, or "you only live once" and enjoy my limited time. Sorry...heavy stuff for a golf thread. Hopefully it offers some kind of explanation for my inconsistent participation of late. Hope to remedy that and then some going forward. Congrats on the non mutation! My family has a similar history, I tested this spring but the result came back I have the mutation. Went through my first scanning this past summer, and so glad I did. Will be screening annually for a while but honestly it’s just nice to know and glad I’m actually able to be proactive. was absent for a bit recently as we’ll been a hectic month. We'll be here once your life settles and you can participate in the forum on a regular basis. I'm happy to hear your daughter is not going to need surgery and that you are free of the mutation that has plagued your family. I've not been as active recently, either. There's been a lot going on at home and my focus has been here. Like you, I hate not being as active but I know it'll calm down and I'll be back to talking about this game we all enjoy soon. tony@CIC, rkj427, tommc23 and 10 others
Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
I've got a lot going on also with " hopefully" my move. The buyers of my current home are nickle and dimeing me to death. Take off money for a new front roof, fix any weathered boards, Fix the old termite damage in the crawlspace after you fully treat the house for termites since there was old damage. I just finished the weekend putting in an additional layer of main beams and a few cross beams. Six 2×8's and three 2x10's. Also added in four additional support posts. Do you know how hard it is to add new beams along side existing beams in a crawl space. With your entire house bearing weight on those existing beams. Not to mention all the electrical lines and heat pump lines your trying to get around. I am getting too old for that kind of work but my son learned a lot helping me. Not to mention saving a few thousand dollars if someone else did the work. Because I needed this on top of trying to pack up everything. I'm a sore puppy right now. But on a positive note. The house in NC is going smoothly. RichL85
Heating went out last week. HVAC was finally able to check it out on Tuesday and found a cracked heat exchanger and it needs a new motor. Now it's in the landlord's hands to decide what to do about it. In the meantime, it has been getting down into the 30s at night so the house has been a bit cold in the morning. Popular Post hohjoe
I spoke to some recently and discovered he had worked for a VA clinic near me and naturally the subject of military service came up. He asked if I received any VA service, and I told him I did not and didn’t think I qualified. He assured me I did. So I went to the clinic, applied for service disability hearing loss. I was asked to schedule a hearing test just over a month later. I had the test, and I was told to expect a 6-8 week wait for any further action. Then in just over two weeks I received a letter stating the VA accepted responsibility due to my MOS for 50% of my hearing loss in each ear and 10% of my tinnitus and the VA is going to pay me a monthly stipend. I was, and still am, shocked since it took so little time to process the data and since it’s been so long since I got out of the Army in ’74. Because I constantly heard how bad VA medical care is in NJ and the Philadelphia area, I have avoided going to the VA. There's a VA clinic in Horsham that's fine for routine things like bloodwork and minor issues, however I'd avoid the hospital in Philly like the plague. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
Crunch time..... I've been packing for over a week. I got the large POD full and it gets picked up tomorrow. I close on my current home on Wednesday and close on our new residence on Thursday. I have to be out by Sunday. Twenty Eight foot U-Haul is set for Friday for the furniture. If all goes well, we should be on the road either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. I haven't been on a golf course in three weeks. Here I am at 11:15 at night and I just sat down to check in. I can't wait to be moved in and unpacked. Looking forward to some new courses! BIG STU
On 11/17/2022 at 1:49 PM, RichL85 said: Heating went out last week. HVAC was finally able to check it out on Tuesday and found a cracked heat exchanger and it needs a new motor. Now it's in the landlord's hands to decide what to do about it. In the meantime, it has been getting down into the 30s at night so the house has been a bit cold in the morning. Nothing like many of you in colder climates, but enough to be uncomfortable and bring out the anger in the wife and kids. I kinda went through the same thing last week. We own an older mobile home and that old furnace is sorta pieced together. Not a lot of people work on the older furnaces anymore. But we do have a fall back we do have the woodstove was in here when we bought the place 22 years ago. My central air went out 2 years ago right when I got hurt so we have used "redneck ACs" as in window units. When I recieved my settlement last year we checked around and decided that it was cheaper to do some work instead of move. And really for us there was no where else we wanted to go. In the last 3 months we have had more insulation and new Vinyl siding installed. One of my golf buds is semi retired and is a carpenter handy man by trade. He works by himself and did not take on the siding job. I did have him rebuild the front porch including the wheelchair ramp. The ramp was here when we bought the place. In fact legally it did not cost me to re do the ramp because that came out of the medical fund money set aside seperately for medical supplies etc related to my accident Since we are staying I think I am going to spend the money and put in a central heat and A/C system. Oh trust me I will keep and still use the wood stove. fozcycle, Rickp, rkj427 and 3 others 6 Quote Driver ---- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha Speeder 565 R flex- 5W TM V-Steel Fubuki 60r--- 7W TM V-Steel UST Pro Force Gold 65R----- 9 W TM V Steel TM MAS stiff---- Irons 2015 TM TP CB Steel Fiber 95 R--- GW Callaway Mack Daddy 2 52* shaft unknown junk pile refugee.
