On the west coast, we have a beer out of Santa Barbara called 805 by Firestone Walker It’s a beer to be enjoyed 365! Floating in my pool watching golf and watching the kids go down the water slide, or camping in the mountains sitting around a fire, or smoking your buddies by 5 strokes at your local favorite track. Not too heavy, not too light, with a nice slight Carmel aftertaste. So good. Or a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with some orange slices… damn, getting thirsty!

Ok this is *not* to start / renew a debate on walking vs riding .. I know there are several other thread for that .. but to ask for opinions from this group on if I should say something to the GM of my club..?

20230331_082005.jpg.e754841d1781ce0253ea7d8d09948be3.jpg

Just happened to see this on Insta earlier, and am kinda wondering if the club may be considering restricting walking...

Do you see this post that way..?

Background:

I prefer to walk; that's the way I enjoy the game and my opinion is that's the way golf was meant to be played. I understand others prefer to ride and that's fine.

One of the pros at the club seems to be anti-walking .. vs I know the head pro is all for it .. but don't know where the GM stands or what his thoughts are ...

Should I email the GM with my thoughts and concerns??

I’ll walk every chance I get. But if the course wasn’t designed with walking in mind, carts have to be used, or it adversely impacts pace of play.

Good point - in this case my club has an, I'll call it, old school course = not super long and in every case except one (on the back 9, and even that one is not all that far) the next tee is pretty close ("proximate" in Alistair Mackenzie speak) to the previous green. A few small hills but overall very walkable, imo.

So Random question:

Planning a road trip to a charity golf tourney in OKC in the fall.  Driving from MN to OKC.  Want to stop in KC for some golf and BBQ.  Recommendations for good courses and BBQ in and around KC?

Thanks!

I go to KC quite often for " Business".  I will actually be there the week after next.

Golf:

Canyon Farms, Dubs Dred, Falcon Lakes, Prairie Highlands are all good courses and I have played them all.

BBQ:

The most popular is Jack Stacks. Joe's Kansas City, Q39, and Burnt Ends BBQ are all good as well.

YES!  It appears that they want feedback, but the way its worded sounds like pro-walking IMO.  Maybe they are looking for info on how many carts they need to have/maintain.

I wouldn't say one is my favorite over another. I would play any one of those without the thought that I wished I was playing one of the others. I have played others in the area, and I only listed the ones that I would go back to from what I have played so far.

True story.  A CC in CT wanted to increase revenue by making carts mandatory on most popular days hours. On Wednesday’s there was a large group of Docs & professional guys who walked and spent a lot of money in grill, restaurant & Pro Shop.  When they received the letter they said no problem WE are all resigning immediately and moving to a neighboring CC who had no problem with them walking. The CC rescinded the mandate but too late these guys left.
Ir looks like you’re CC is feeling out the impact from the members.

Prefer not to leave the club but honestly as a hypothetical let's say they disallowed walking weekend mornings... I could easily live with that - for the right discount off annual dues 😝 - as I prefer quieter times later in the day anyway.

But this season plan to speak more with other walkers that I see there.

Son’s first travel baseball tournament is the year today.  Got five minutes from the field before we learned his game had been pushed back by two hours.

So now we’re going to go to Olive Garden to eat something and kill time.  Which will be lovely.

Playing Solo.  I wanted to get your thoughts on playing by yourself?  Do you like it?  Do you do it out of necessity?  Do you think its weird?  Years ago I used to get up early and be the first one out on Tewksbury CC before the place even opened.  I mean like I would pay after my round.  I was by myself and could walk the 9 holes in about 60-75 min.  I loved it!  Do any of you do anything like that?

I don't think it's weird. I play the majority of rounds by myself. I can play at my own pace., Although, sometimes I wish there was someone to see the shot I made, but most of the time I'm glad there wasn't a witness.

Not much of a MLB fan nowadays but have been watching a special about Tony Gwynn, a player I very much liked back then.  What a great story and what an awesome human being.  I didn't know he played both basketball and baseball for San Diego State. Arguably one of the greatest find a gap hitter ever.  Seeing the footage of he and his family receiving the call that he had been voted into the Hall of Fame was cool.  Sure could use a lot more Tony Gwynn's these days.

The whole tornado thing is scary - prayers to all affected. What's interesting to me is how the weather has changed. It wasn't that many years ago that tornados were more frequent in the KC area and hardly ever ventured in the mid south, now the opposite seems to have taken place.

I just got the news that the course I just joined is not planning to open until May 5th now. With courses opening and snow really melting this week I am beyond frustrated. The course was bought by a resort to the north which I will admit likely saves the course, but it is overly clear where there priorities are now. Those that vacation or have a second home up there are not coming up this way till the summer anyway so why open as soon a possible, and anyone who lives around here where now they own the own the only two courses at least 30 minutes in either direction, time to just suck it up and take the shortened season. I want to play golf as much as possible and before this the course was about that, now it is all about bringing in out of area golfers as much as they can. Just feeling like this in this trade local residents are losing a lot. Sorry I know the course needs to be financially viable and this is likely the only way to accomplish that it just sucks that it comes at making someone like myself feeling like such an after thought even as a member (not like a true member, more like a season pass to play whenever you want).

That sucks. Even if they just opened 9 for a week and then another 9 for the next week it would be better.

At this point anything, it is just the continuing of a trend. Started last year when I tried to show up on a Saturday ans sneak out 10 minutes early as a single since I only found out on Friday that I could play to only get a no I couldn't possibly do that. To literally making me wait until 6 to tee off when I get that at 5:45 and I have the first tee time as a single. The best part was one weekday morning I did this they made we wait until 6 and a 5:57 the fairway mower starts up. It is just getting more uptight and rigid by the week it feels and I am not enjoying it to say the least. Sorry no one needs to hear me complain this much just thought I would save my wife from hearing about it for the 50th time
