Got Problems?

Schools are the main focus. I have 5 kids, they are more important than the job. So, sending them to a school in say Downtown Miami doesn't sound to appealing.

The job is the same mostly at all of these places.

I understand that completely.

Cites aren't ideal for kids unless they have sexy nannies and go to snobby private schools.

I would have liked that too, but it was never within my means.

My kids went to city public schools with all the challenges that entailed

Had to save money for their college tuitions.

I couldn't agree more about the unsolicited calls.

How could anybody not hate them?

But how can you survive without a credit card?

How do you make a hotel reservation?

Buy airline tickets?

Rent a car?

How much cash do you have to carry around?

(I assume you have to carry a gun!)

Do you always use cash in restaurants?

I don't carry a balance on mine, but I can't imagine living without them.

It's not 1940.

The world runs on credit and debit cards, doesn't it?

Then again, if you can do it and still live the way you choose to live,

that's great--more power to you!

You sound like you are shaming me for avoiding all of the pitfalls of digging yourself into tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

I used to carry around a couple of credit cards, and one day I work up and got tired of paying $300 - $400 a month to some bank for some meal I had bought like 5 years ago that still remained on my credit card.  I sold a couple of houses and paid off the credit cards and only buy things I can afford to pay cash for.  If you are in debt and paying for things that you "have to have it now" and running up thousands in debt, I frankly think it's a foolish way to live.  I say that only as someone who used to live that way.  Absolutely stupid IMHO and my own experience.

As for the answers to how I do hotel reservations and those sorts of things, I do carry a debit card that is attached to my checking account.  That suffices for all those sorts of purchases.

But I will tell you this, after reading about a number of people who had their credit card numbers stolen by some low life restaurant employee, I pay cash anytime I go out to eat.  I don't trust anyone who has access to my card and it leaves my sight.  So when we go out to eat, which is a lot, cash it is.

I apologize and assure you that shaming you was the furthest thing from my intention, G.

This was my reasoning: you can afford to play golf, and golf is an obscenely expensive game.

I therefore assumed that you lived in a manner that might normally require credit cards.

I also said, if you look back--more power to you if you don't need them.

As I said, I don't carry a balance on mine.

I just couldn't live the way that I know how to live without them.

I certainly did once, many years ago, but that was many years ago.

No criticism of you in the least if you can--truly.

Again, I'm sorry if I offended you.

You realize you can pay your balance off each month month, never pay a dime of interest, and get cash back, right?

My wife and and I put everything on one credit card and pay it off every month. Never have paid one cent in interest. Get $50 to 80 cash back every month.

Personally I keep a credit card for the travel perks I get with the one in particular, but I never understood how people could rack up so much debt. You don't spend more than you make. It's isn't rocket appliances.

Just attended a wedding of good friends last month and most of it was financed because of course it had to be at the newest golf course in the city. Now they're asking parents and grandparents (some of them have already thrown some cash their way) to help them out and they'll "pay them back as soon as they can"

I lived for 20+ years that way, where I got sucked in thinking that I'll just pay it off at the end of the month and get cash back, or rewards, or whatever.  Next time I looked up I had $6k in credit card debt.  If it works for you, more power to you, but knowing my undisciplined self, it's too tempting to get sucked back into debt when I go one month not being able to pay it off.

Too much bad history, bad debt and bad experiences with credit cards to ever want to go down that road again.

I'm debt free, including a paid for house and cars, etc. My largest bill every month is the cable company.  I'm content paying cash for everything as much as possible.  I know that any cash I have in my pocket to pay for things won't put me in debt.  It's just far too easy to whip out a credit card to pay for things, and not have the discipline to remember what you spent on that card and where.

Just my bad experience talking is all.

Here's my rant:

I'm a little disappointed that nobody commented on my "Short Par Five" thread.

I'm getting to be a real boring  m-f er  in my old age, i guess.

I guess that i find amusement in prosaic things--as if i were smoking pot (I'm not)..

There's probably about 100 people lurking, and 5-10 people who post regularly.  I'm borderline at the point to where I think I am posting too much, so I've retreated into a lot of lurking lately.

The other side of this coin is someone who goes through about 30 different intro threads and says, "welcome" in every one of them.  When someone does that, it bumps all of the interesting threads like yours onto the 2nd page, and that means it's essentially gone into oblivion.

Maybe I shouldn't view MGS the way I do, where the latest threads are on top, because all of these intro threads are an empty waste of space honestly.  If you want to introduce yourself, contribute to a real thread, and go from there.  Otherwise, it's a waste of space.

Personally, I don't view Intro threads as empty waste of space.  When I joined MGS 5 years ago, I lurked for awhile just to get to know some of the regulars... some are still here!!  Then I joined and wrote an Intro describing myself and my game.  I don't remember exactly, but I think I got maybe 5-6 welcomes.  I wanted to change that and make people that take the time to write up good intros feel like they can stay and chat with us.

It is a little different today with all the MGS testing opportunities that didn't exist when I joined.  I applaud MGS for creating these opportunities and getting people to join.  Although most only join for the tests and rarely post anything, there have been many new forum members that stuck around and I'm happy that they have.  Even though I haven't met many of them, I feel like they have become close friends.

BTW, it's easy to tell who might stick around.  It's the ones that check back in their Intro thread, and post replies to comments made by members welcoming them.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I (mostly) agree with that.

I didn't create an intro thread for myself, but then again, I knew I was going to stick around. I feel like a better way to get to know someone, is getting to know them, when they are just posting, instead of an intro thread where they tell you what they want you to know. (If that makes any sense)

Otherwise I don't mind an intro thread IF you are going to stick around and contribute regularly. I do mind when you make an intro thread and only apply for testings. That is what clutters the place up.

That's sucks. I'm sure their Customer Service will take care of it after all it's poor packaging that caused the damage and loss.

Anyone else get a ton of SPAM calls on your cell phone?

I get about 4 or 5 variety of these calls every day, and the ones that are obvious are from the same area code and prefix as my phone number (850-445-****). If I see that sort of number on my screen I don't even answer it.

Then there are others from Las Vegas and New York that are 99.9% guaranteed to be SPAM.

The ones that make me laugh are the record messages that say, "We are calling about your credit card account..."

I don't have a credit card you morons!!!

The other one that is really starting to piss me off and make me want to jump through the phone and strangle this person is the one where after you say hello, they say, "Hello Grandpa."

I mean, how bold and evil do you have to be to just be randomly trying to scam old people out of money. There has to be a special place in hell for people that would even attempt phone calls like these. I so want to put a tracer on my phone and locate these scum of the earth and have them put before a firing squad. That would be the only appropriate justice for these sorts of scum of the earth.

A primary reason why we cancelled our house phone!

Also I read a news article the other day that the cell companies are very concerned because it taxes the system. They calculate that by the end of this year spam calls will represent 52% of all calls. I don't answer a call today but just wait for a voicemail. I figure if you want to talk to me you'll leave a message.

Oh and if I don't recognize the number it gets blocked. I must have several hundred blocked numbers on my phone.

FYI you can buy a spam blocking service from the cell companies. AND you might also be interested in knowing that politicians are excluded from regulations regarding unsolicited /spam calls.

Hiya is a good caller id/ phone block app

I've been using Should I Answer? Compares all incoming calls to a known offenders database and can be configured to not even ring when it's known spam. They struggle with the places that mimic numbers in your area code/exchange, which I suspect all the blockers will. I got 15 calls over three days that caller ID said was my number. I answered a couple times hoping to yell at a human, but it was a robocall.

Doesn't a land line come with your internet and cable TV?

It's included with mine.

We've got a set of five, and they all tell us visually and verbally who's calling.

They even pronounce most ethnic names correctly.

Plus, if any of the TVs are on, the caller ID shows up there as well.

AND, they even link with our stupid cell phones.

Good thing we have the land line, because I hate the modern cell phones, this although we're forced to have a couple.

I like keys, not touch screens. That's why although my wife has a smart phone, I'm sticking with my flip.
