  • 2 weeks later...

Starting to grow concerned that I might have tennis elbow. I started having some minor discomfort a few weeks back but it was on and off, no big deal. Thought maybe I slept wrong. I was in some discomfort after playing 18 this weekend, but figured that was just overuse due to the amount of shots I had to hit (😳) . Yesterday I hit a large bucket and was really not feeling so hot once I was done, and this morning after working on props for the kids last night I am now in some serious discomfort. Some quick research has my arm pain in the exact spot of tennis elbow. Gonna pop some Advil and see what happens, but of course now I'm going to be worried that it's going to keep popping up as I play.

Will those arm 'pressure' bands work for you? I played with a guy last Tuesday that had them on his arms - same issue.

No idea. This morning is the first I really considered this might be an issue due to the pain I was in when I woke up. I could barely get my coffee cup lifted without a stab of pain. I just spoke with a co-worker who was diagnosed with it a few months back, I guess heavy mouse usage at work can cause it as well, and I'm on the stupid computer all day long at work. I'm also wondering if moving back to steel shafts after using graphite for so long may have had a hand. Anyways, we shall see.

Arm pressure bands did not help me. One of the platinum our group is a Doc and he gave me a series of exercises to do and after s month or so pain was gone.
The exercises should be on line if not let me know.
Good luck I know it is very painful.

Guess it's more voodoo stuff? On the other hand what did wonders for my joints was glucosamine.

I am assuming that the pain is in your lead elbow (left?).

I have had that pain off and on over the years, and I found it to be an issue with the position of my elbow at impact.  The lead elbow rotates in the backswing and the downswing, and at impact the elbow should be pointed at the target, as should the back of the lead hand.  The problem that I have had in the past is that I tended to rotate my arm too much, which put the forearm in the "sunny side up" position.  When the club makes impact, the elbow is not in a position to bend a little like an elbow is supposed to, and stress is put on the joint.  While graphite shafts will absorb more of the vibration than steel, the swing flaw is still there so the chance for pain still exists.

I had used graphite for years, but I prefer the feel of steel.  I went back to lightweight steel a couple of years ago and haven't had an issue since I improved my downswing through impact.

... You will get differing opinions from those of us that have suffered this insidious injury. Close to 20 years ago I decided to master the knockdown shot. It was fall in windy Chicago and almost all courses stop watering, so everything was hard and fast. I hit knockdown irons off every tee and every full shot I played. The good news is I became very proficient at knocking the ball down in the wind. The bad news is I developed some nasty elbow tendonitis. Started similar to you with some discomfort and I took ibuprofen and played thru the pain. It kept getting worse until I just couldn't play and finally went to an Ortho. Total rest for 3 months. It was already late October so the season was just about over.

... The reason I am posting this is I switched to graphite in my irons. After reading everything I could, graphite in irons for elbow tendonitis was recommended by too many to ignore. I started hitting in a dome right at 3 months and at that time Aldila was making the NV Tour iron shaft and at 130gms and 1.5* of torque it performed as well or better than my DGS300's. But before diving in to graphite, I tried Sensicore, Pro Soft and a few home made shaft cushioning inserts, and while they improved the feel, I still had elbow pain. It completely disappeared with graphite. I have played graphite irons ever since, going from the 130gm shafts to Aldila Pro 105's, Aldila VS Proto 100's and finally VS Proto 85's that proved to be too light for my swing so 95gms is my cut off weight. I have tried Stelfiber and Recoil 95/110s, currently playing Recoil 95 Prototypes. I would never go back to steel.

... My advice would be caution and rest. It is never a bad idea to see a specialist if the pain persists. Good luck!

It's actually in my right elbow, however that's the arm that's also moving and clicking a mouse 8+ hours a day. It may be that the range and a few rounds caused things to really flare up. I never hit off of mats just to avoid things like this.

I'm planning on giving the clubs a rest for a few weeks and I took some ibuprofin this morning, which I'll continue with for a few days. If this keeps up & doesn't get better, or it flares up again, I'll head to the doc. I started researching exercises as well.

I did have graphite shafts for around 3 years and I loved them for the launch, since I'm a slower swinger and low ball hitter. My son now has my last set with graphites and I've been in steel again since last summer. Even without the elbow, I was considering going back to graphites and this may have been the final push I needed.

Trying to get my wife to consider it. She's got nerve damage in her back, a frozen shoulder, and heads in for surgery on her wrist next Wednesday. My brother's been using it for his back for a year with great success. I've been following your posts about your experiences with it as well.

My Crohn’s/IBS situation is ridiculous. I can’t find ANYTHING bland enough, or “gluten-free” enough, etc, that doesn’t mess up my gut. Every day, some kind of pain or discomfort. Ridiculous. Dr has no answers....

Humira didn’t work for me. Was out of my system too quickly. Dr says it’s more IBS than anything, but we can’t find the root of what causes the daily issues: a food, a spice, etc. I eat mostly plain white rice and baked potatoes on bad days, which is about 3-4 days a week.

Try CBD oil. 20-30mg or so under the tongue in the morning and another dose before bed.

Try some KT Tape... you know, the tape that Michelle Wie wore all over her body.   You can get it at Walmart.  My wife uses it on her knee... not the one that was replaced, the other one!!

Thanks for the link, I appreciate it!

On the good side - my co-worker gave me his arm band to use for a bit of the day yesterday and it made a big difference. So I bought one at CVS (and got a mile long receipt!) and wore it last night while I had to cut a number of PVC pipes and use a drill for a few hours. This morning I'm still a bit sore but it's nowhere close to what it was yesterday. I'm hopeful that a few days of the band plus ibuprofin will help. Not touching the clubs for at least a week.

We had what I suspect was a tornado come through at 6pm on Sunday night. We lost power and it was finally restored at midday yesterday although the internet is still down. Fortunately the battery backup sump pump worked great and was still going strong when the power came back on.

But, the worst part was we lost another tree. A big willow that gave a bit of privacy to our pool. Another fortunately, when it went, it went in the opposite direction of the pool and the fence I replaced from the last tree coming down. I've called the tree company because I started cutting it yesterday and realised that it's just too big for me.

I hate to see you lost a tree, especially one as nice as that willow, but I'm glad to hear that it wasn't worse than that. Hearing anything about a tornado is a scary thing. We had some rip through our area a few years ago and the destruction was terrible.

That's a lot of tree to be cutting up. - makes sense to call a tree company. We had another squall run through the the western part of the state tonight it'll probably reach you in a couple of hours. Hope it doesn't knock out your power (again).

Man that stinks.

Back in NY we a had a few nice willows, one very large in the middle of the front yard.

But their root system runs so darn shallow and their wispy canopy catches so much air that one by one, they all came down at Mother Nature's command.

Love 'em but so easy to lose 'em too. Good luck with the removal.

You took the words right away from me.
Willows are awesome but unfortunately are fragile.

Glad you guys are ok. I live in Moore OK and we have had some truly horrific tornadoes with just devastating damage and loss of life. I'm glad your pool wasn't damaged too.
