Need to do a little work vent... So as most you know I work as an Ice Technician for Curling Clubs/Events. I've been assigned to go to Kazakhstan in November for 2 weeks to do an event there. It is a long flight (even from Switzerland) and the visa process is tedious at best. However that is all well fine and good.

I have been to this same venue and city before back in 2017 for another event. People are nice, food is good, but still a very different world from what most of us are use to. Which leads me to my vent/rant. Last event we had ALL brand new equipment for our ice making needs. This equipment was taken and as we were told put into storage... apparently this wasn't the case. We had a call the other day and they want all new equipment again... however we are a month out and ordering, shipping and customs it is likely impossible to get it into the country on time. On the call we were told to forget about the 2017 kit and will likely have to source a lot locally (not easy to do) or bring a lot in bags what we can. The sad part is this is not entirely unexpected and teams here are trying to qualify for worlds and olympics which is very important so a lot of pressure on making stellar conditions.

In the end we will get the job done, but the stress is already mounting and there is little spoken english there(thankfully my deputy is Russian), but it will be an adventure however with a little extra care a lot of this could have all been avoided and managed a lot easier.

Before anyone asks there was no way I thought I'd be going back there either... but again the food was good!

Keep in mind Kaz has only been independent for the last 25 or so years so there is still corruption and well shady stuff. As I've been told much of it from the previous event is broken, stolen, lost or who else knows. I mean I had to use a garbage bin and sub pump to mix and spray the paint last time haha

I'm hoping to have a call and catalogue what is there and bring everything I can, but who knows. I will have 6 days (5 after TV takes a day for setup) from when I arrive to take it from a hockey arena to full curling arena with all the dressing and good stuff! It will be enough time, but bound to loose a day or two to stuff not being there, needing to build something or who knows what else.
Screenshot 2021-09-24 20.10.45.png

I should say although this is a rant/vent these experiences are incredibly unique and provide funny stories, new friends and travel to incredible places. However in a normal event I'll do 12-14 days at 12-14 hours a day and this will be closer to 14 days at 16-20 hour days... just needing to mentally prepare for it and appreciate all those listening to me vent away.

Good luck. Was there a reason why you couldn’t have brought the tools back with you before? Was it because they bought it and therefore “kept it on site” in Kazakhstan

Not really a problem, but a frustrating morning today. Last night I received a request from our automation manager in Florida if I could be at a client site this morning to act as a second set of eyes and oversee the operation of a piece of equipment that has been giving the client some trouble recently. This kind of thing is normal in my job so no big deal. I have some reports to work on but not terribly busy. I arrive at the client site early because of the time difference I can be in touch with Florida if there are issues.

Turns out, the client site is not even running the equipment at the moment due to an issue with a piece of equipment on their side that is needed to supply it. Would have been nice if they had communicated to me that the issue was going to prevent them from using the equipment and given me at least an estimate when my equipment was going to be up and running so I could do something useful with my time.

The box for equipment for the event is 10 by 6 by 4 (feet) and that didn't include the painting equipment, scraping machines and blades so it is quite a lot and probably 50k US worth of gear.  Just too much, normally places rent equipment from us (world curling federation) but they wanted to buy it. Apparently the stones are okay though! Because that's another 80k of "equipment" haha

... I hear ya. The day before I moved in to my first home (new construction) I played golf with a guy in his late 40's. He congratulated me on my new home and said I should go in the backyard, dig a deep hole and start throwing money in it because that is what is like to own your one home. I thought it was a pretty crappy comment to damper my excitement but not inaccurate. 😳

At least it's your hole in the ground 🤷‍♂️

He has a fractured orbital bone.  He’s been to 2 Docs today and his eyesight is coming back. Doc told our daughter he  will need a few surgeries.
Typical Kid he’s concerned that he won’t be able to get ready for Spring Ball and might lose his starting spot as Varsity catcher.

I’m putting this here because I will most likely have a problem in a few days.  I’ve been nursing the shoulder for a few weeks now… pain is getting better, and the strength is getting better… so against my better judgment. I’m going to play 9 sometime this week.  Probably 75% swings, but I can’t stand being on the bench anymore.

My shoulder has been bothering me for about a week now, but it's not structural, just muscular.  I played on Sat. and Sun. but it wasn't fun.  It took me 9 holes each day to get comfortable taking a full swing, and my ss is nothing close to yours!!  Well struck shots didn't hurt much, but a bad shot hurt a lot.  Don't make any bad shots!!

I echo @Rickp's comment.  BE CAREFUL!!

I distinctly remember my dad telling me things that could have prevented some trouble… did I listen? Absolutely not.

Will i this time? No. But I will be careful and if it starts to bother me I’ll quit.

All right guys, I,ve got one for you. Had open heart surgery in June. Getting antsy to play golf again. Will have four months of healing under my belt next week. Want to know if anyone on this site has gone through the same and how long it took them to get back playing. What drills and exercises did you use to get back in shape. Am putting right now but that's it. Docs  are of differing opinions of when to start back. One says around November and another say after the first of the year. Sure don't want to mess things up or my surgeon will be pissed. Thanks in advance.

I wanted to give an update on my mother-in-law, as the past week or so there hasn't been much of a change in her condition and really nothing to tell. She's finally cleared of Covid and her MRSA is under control. She's doing well enough that they transferred her to a rehab facility last night.

She's still got a long road ahead of her, but at least this is a positive. It's going to take a while to get her back up and walking as she's been bed ridden for a month and a half. My wife said she talked to her today and today was the first time Cindy really realized how bad of a shape she's been in. Honestly, she's been pretty disoriented and confused, telling some wild stories. I've gotta say, she's got am imagination.

I appreciate all the support and encouragement as my family has been going through a lot. You all are awesome!

I'll continue to update as things progress, I just wanted to share she's finally out of the hospital.

Fantastic news 🙂

Also nice to hear a positive prognosis! Hera's hoping for a speedy recovery.

If it was smacking as bad as you described in the first post, I'd advise not to hit balls.  Maybe just lightly swing the club for exercise and to keep things loose, maybe some short chipping and putting, but these injuries take some time to heal.  If you rush it and re-aggravate, it can set you back or make it even worse.

My non-medical background, simply a fellow spy who has dealt with chronic shoulder pain, .02 cents... worth exactly what you paid for it.

Happy to hear she's out ofd the hospital and in rehab.  My advice to make sure that she is up and about as much as possible.  My dad spent 2.5 months in rehab the first of the year after a fall.  I couldn't get in the see him because of covid, and I don't think he was out off bed much except for his therapy and meals near the end of his stay.  He ended up with bed sores that took a long time to heal.  Keep her moving!!

Great to hear man. Having done through something similar with my dad, it’s always a blessing when they make it through

My brother-in-law's girlfriend gave birth to their son two days ago, about 6 weeks early. Haven't heard too much news other than the baby will probably be in NICU for at least a month. Having been through the NICU with my own, I do not wish those kinds of experiences on anyone.
