Found an SM6 wedge...Knockoff or Unfinished product?

Ashton Plumley

Recommended Posts

So I have been looking around the internet for random things to sell or buy or buy then sell, and I found this website out of Hong Kong that sells mostly cheap products and gadgets. Well for kicks I typed in "golf" and these Titleist looking wedges pop up. They look just like a Titelist SM6 but they don't have a name brand on them. It almost appears scratched off. So my first thought is Knockoffs! But then I started looking, the name almost appears scratched off. So here are my questions...

How different would they really play??

What are your thoughts and experiences?

For $50 it might just be worth the gamble

Looks like they used photo shop to blur the titleist logo. Might be clubs taken from the factory.

Something looks fishy with those things alright.

Edit: I'm sure they will play. But you might be buying into a fake/copied - pirated - illegal business.

Best to just stick with legit clubs.

I had a buddy buy the old Cleveland RTG wedges 3 for $100 and they've worked fine for him to this day. However my father in law bought an FT IQ driver from one of his buddies that bought it online and it was a total POS.

Yep you gotta watch that stuff especially from that area of the world. Like others said those photos seem to be photo shopped. I bet the real product is shoddy. I have seen some of that crap. For folks in that business it is easy to copy and cheap to build. The ones you get could be made of any kind of what we call cheap pot metal. that is why the big golf companies have banded together in recent years to combat what is called bootlegging of counterfit clubs. I know about 10 years ago they caught some guys just up the road in North Carolina reverse casting Scotty Cameron putters and selling them cheap. I would rather buy used real stuff from a reputable dealer than to really even think about buying something like that. Those Cameron copies those guys were doing looked suspect to a real trained eye but to the average guy they could not tell the difference. Putt with one of them and if you have ever putted with a real Scotty you would know the difference. Those guys tried to sell us some at the golf shop and we were a Titleist dealer even though we did not stock Cameron putters we could get them. We suspected a Rat since these guys were selling them about 75% lower than we could get them at dealer prices. We bought 2 to try and caught the whole transaction on security along with the tag number. After we did the deal we contacted one of our customers who happens to be a Law Enforcement Officer on the county wide fraud and crime task force. We also contacted Titleist. Our cop buddy came out and got the tapes and putters. He came back a couple of days later and said the Feds were already all over that deal. In fact a federal ATF officer came and talked to us and told us to keep mum on the deal. Titleist even sent some security guy along with our rep out a couple of days later. They had already been building a case against these guys and we added fuel to the fire so to speak. About a month later the Feds pounced on them. We actually got reinbursed for the putters by Titleist or actually given a credit. We never got a receipt but it was all on tape. In my way of thinking and upbringing that is pure theft just like sticking a gun in someone's face and taking their billfold and cash etc. I personally have no problem with clone clubs for folks on a budget but absolute counterfits I have a problem with

This. Also, I watched a show a few years back on fake golf equipment and how it can have inconsistencies in the equipment (incorrect loft and lies (which happens in legitimate sets way too often as well), differences in weighting and head materials then the originals and defective shaft flex too which caused unexplained/inconsistent distances when hit. Not to mention the financial effect on the original company. I would be wary of buying from a site like that.

I think the pictures are real Vokeys with the logo photo shopped out.  The Vokey custom shop is now located in China.  It is possible that some clubs are finding their way out the back door.  It is more likely that what you would receive would look nothing like the pictures.  Grey market goods are tricky.  I know for a fact that high end Seiko automatic timepieces find their way out of the factory and are sold for 50 cents on the dollar.  I know this because I own a few, and they have been authenticated.  I'm not proud of supporting theft, but my defense is that upon purchase I fully anticipated receiving  a horrible fake.  I'd stay away as even if they are real the unsavory characters who stole them may not send you yours.
