DeChambeau trying Side-saddle

Joey East Coast

I believe Randy Haag once said Bryson would be the best side-saddle putter the Tour has seen. I have my doubts...

Yeah. He seems like a very intelligent person, but I bet he over thinks everything.

I thought he was already a pretty good putter but if he thinks it will help him further then I am all for it. Every one thought he was nuts on the constant length clubs and huge grips but he has started something. Several companies are marketing heads for constant length clubs including Tom Wishon. Like everything else in golf It ain't for everyone (me included) but for some I can see it helping some folks

Most people with minds like that tend to "over engineer" at times. Their minds run like a computer

Seems a little early in a career to be making a change like that IMO. I would have thought he was a good putter to even get to the level he is and with all the accomplishments he's had so far.

I expected better here at MGS. I saw some vitriol thrown at DeChambeau over at wrx, but thought this forum would embrace the forward thinking Is it different? Maybe. Will it work? According to Dave Pell, it probably will.

http://www.golf.com/tour-and-news/sidesaddle-putting-why-sam-sneads-method-might-be-post-anchoing-future-putting

And Gary McCord, the master of instruction, thinks so too.

Even if it doesn't last, I like that someone is trying something new in what can often be a fairly staid sport. It'll be interesting. Worst case it'll be something to watch while waiting for Tiger's next tournament.

I agree - I don't know that he's 'my kinda guy' but I can't bash on him - he might be weird, but he's making a lot more money than I am, and he's playing golf with Lexi all week!

In all seriousness, he has already changed the sport - single length irons are gaining popularity, I'm seeing people wearing those hats, and I'll bet you start seeing local people putting sideways by the spring.

He makes me think he'll tinker his WHOLE career and not really ever be great. I could see him going a similar path like Charles Howell III who's a declared tinkerer as well. Time will tell...

Hey, no hate here. I would love to see him win or top 5 it with that stroke and turn the forums/OEMs on their heads. It would be arm-lock push 2.0.

I agree! I play with a guy like that, who has a 'new tweak' or 'swing change' every week and wonders why he never gets better.

Changed the sport? Debatable at best. As for single length irons, don't confuse "available for purchase" with "gaining popularity". Scally caps have also been around for decades, just look at Ty Webb. KJ Choi tried side-saddle at the 2010 John Deere and was subjected to the same doubts and skepticism Bryson is currently experiencing. I question how much is game-tinkering and how much is quirky marketing. Regardless, his hustle is real. Dude has his card for '17 and is making his money. Gotta respect that at the very least.

With only a few exceptions, most pros tinker all the time, especially with putting.  How many different putters and putting grips have you seen the pros use in the past 5 years.  Phil, Sergio, Rory...  Some work, some don't, but they are always tinkering, looking for an advantage over what they have been doing.  BD is no different.  Part of his "brand" if you want to call it that, is what I call throwback; I almost expect him to wear knickers at some point, but he has to be careful to not step into the Payne Stewart model... yet.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Didn't Snead side saddle later in his career? Really helps you sweep it to the cup- looks so weird though!

If it improved my putting I'd be all in on side saddle putting! It might look goofy but I can handle that if the results are there.

It would appear the USGA, in it's infinite wisdom, has gotten in it's own way again.

http://www.morningread.com/releases/4d684bcd-591a-444e-b8fc-1b31360818b6

According to Adam Schupak, the USGA has deemed DeChambeau's putter to be nonconforming.  Inspecting the putter on a weekly basis, according to the article, gives me the impression the USGA is trying to find a way to make DeChambeau conform rather than use a conforming club.

I wonder if the USGA is trying to get him to give it up voluntarily.

Quote from your linked article "DeChambeau, 23, was able to use the putter head but with the shaft in the rear instead of the center of the club. "

In doing so, it causes him to push the COG through impact rather than pull it through impact with the shaft placed at the front of the putter head. This can lead to more unstable face angle and reduced MOI on off-center hits. Thus, if Bryson were to find that the putter was too unforgiving, he would voluntarily give it up for an alternative.

Ultimately, this would be the best case scenario for USGA. Instead of looking bad by banning him from using it, he would simply stop and people would think it just wasn't working for him.

Conspiracy?

I think they were hoping for him to give it up voluntarily by pushing a 23 year old kid in the direction they would like for him to go.

In my opinion, I think this is far more about optics with the USGA than the construction of the putter itself.  They don't like the look of it and it doesn't fit with the 'old guard traditionalists" mentality.
