tony@CIC
What a difference a day makes. Wife and I played yesterday - blue skies, mid 70's and no wind. Today it's 61 wind gusting to 19 and overcast. Can't believe I'm admitting this- I went for a bike ride tonight and had jeans on with a polartec vest over a long sleeve tee shirt. So for all of you Floridians I made fun of the other day who were wearing a parka and long pants in 60's weather I'm sorry for making fun of you. ejgaudette
In NH its that time of year, now and spring, where we get the lovely mixed precipitation. I have always found it interesting how just subtle changes can take you from snow, to sleet, to freezing rain. In NH most precipitation, even a whole bunch in the summer, starts as ice crystals (its cold up there in the clouds) and then melts on the way down as it warms up. the depending on the depth of the cold air at the surface you can get sleet or freezing rain. Just a little less cold air can take the ice pellets of sleet, which while slippery are nothing like the glazing and coating freezing rain that just wreaks havoc. Also quick shout out to my favorite winter precipitation, graupel. Its those tiny balls of snow that fall from time to time, like very small snow hail.
