While I was practicing my swing, with a shovel, moving the "Buffalo sunshine" that fell in the supposed winter storm the day before, I looked up and said, "Hey cool a sun dog" seeing the one on the right. Then noticed the one on the left and said, "awesome a double sun dog!" And then I noticed the top one and the halo connecting all three and the sun pillar rising from the central sun and (took the picture first) then called to my wife and said "you gotta come out and see this!" as she is a science teacher too. There are secondary refractions off each one of the three sun dog nexus that look like horns or crowns and sun pillar like a beam upward from the sun. The lower ray is sun flare in the camera lens. It's all about the refraction of sunlight off ice crystals in the atmosphere at exactly 120⁰ of incidence between the observer's eyes and the sun. Alf. S
Snow gone in Scotland hopefully for the Winter. Big thaw this week means course open for 18 holes for the 1st time in 3 weeks but lots of stormy weather coming in from the Atlantic, hopefully avoiding the course leaving in open for the 1st competitive golf at the weekend. Played the 18 today, dry but gusting up to 25mph, my driving was abysmal to start with and started double, bogey, double, par, double. 7 over after 5 then fished 8 over for the remaining 13. Really rusty but happy with the finish.
