quick unofficial review - BagBoy Quad XL push cart

Recommended Posts

Have been wanting a nicer push cart because I plan on walking a lot more next year.  Currently have a 3 wheel Caddytek that works ok, but has some drawbacks.  Couple things I wanted from a new cart: 1. more upright, so the clubs don't lay right on top of the console, like my current one 2. some way of making the umbrella higher, I'm kind of tall, so I keep hitting my head on it 3. Easy fold and unfold.

I saw the Quad Xl in my local golf shop and felt it met my needs (there is an available umbrella holder extension!  you have no idea how excited I was for this)

So I decided I would probably give this one a go, when I got a good deal on it.  Then came along RockBottom....cart is normally $200 everywhere, but they have it at $170 and gave me a 24% off....So I scored it for about $130 and picked up the deluxe umbrella holder (which is required for the extension, they didn't have the extension, so i will pick that up on amazon)

It was super easy to put together, basically unfold it and snap the wheels on, prob took less than 2 minutes

20161218_094821.jpg

As you can see, when folded down, it is pretty small (driver for scale)

20161218_094701.jpg

One thing I could tell right away, is everything about it is high quality, the frame, wheels, console, etc....

20161218_094807.jpg

Folding/Unfolding couldn't be easier.....unlock the handle, pull a quick lever and done...hopefully this video shows up

https://youtu.be/XSCHguWN8-E

It definitely fits my want of holding the bag more upright, the clubs are no longer in the way of the console

If you have any questions about it, let me know......I'm extremely happy with my purchase and can't wait to get it on the course!

I like these smaller more compact designs. Question: what secures the bottom end of the bag? I'm guessing there is some sort of strap. Does your bag remain upright and not shifting from side to side?

there is no strap on the bottom, only on top..it sits on top of a bar.....feels very stable though, dont feel like shifting will be an issue

Good info Judge!   I use a golf cart and have for many years now.  It's not like I'm physically unable to walk as I already walk two miles every day with my dog. The last three golf courses have included the cart fee in the package so almost feel obligated to use it.

I LOVE the way your new cart folds down into a very compact position.  This would be a huge selling point if I was in the market. With the discounts it looks like now would be right for picking one of these puppies up.

Hey thanks for posting!!!

Great info!

Q: do you know the approx weight?

Q2: did you try it with a stand bag (vs a cart bag)?

I'd splurged on two new ClicGear 8.0s for myself and my wife, and while they are quality and durable carts we would actually prefer something a bit lighter.

I'm also liking the more upright carry on that BagBoy, too.

I did not weigh it, but the website says 14lbs

I do not have a stand bag to put on it, but it says that it is designed for cart or stand bags...check the pic below, the stands shouldn't interfere

The upright position is a HUGE bonus, with my caddytek, you basically can't get into the console or especially the drink holder without pushing the clubs aside

That, or at least rule the SLDR-C Driver non-conforming.

It's a very 'hot-faced' driver, and quite possibly non-conforming!..  :o

Could this 'hot-faced' 2015 SLDR-C clubface pass the CT test?..

Well,  :taylormade-small: knows, but frankly I prefer NOT to know!.. :P

(Of course, if I did actually know, I wouldn't admit it here!).. :D

Others can debate the matter....I just want to keep on playing it!..

Cool, will do!

After one more question: did you also look at the Clever Caddie Upright (same price)?

BagBoy looks a bit more durable, tho the Clever Caddy may be a few.pounds lighter and can hold the bag vertically.

(dammm I spend too much time comparison shopping.)

I actually did do some research on that one....it seems the only real advantage it had was being completely upright, the reviews were not all that good on it as well and I didn't see much in the way of storage.   Some of the reviews I found commented on it being cheaply made.

Unofficial Follow-On Review, by cksurfdude, to the Unofficial Forum Member Review, by Judge Smails, of the BagBoy Quad XL push cart.

  • Bottom Line:

    • A nicely featured and very high utility cart at a very good price.

    • Highly Recommended!

Plus it looks good, too! Check out this pic -- could not have matched the color better to my bag if I took it into one of those shops on “Pimp My Ride”!

BB glam shot.jpg

Story: then...

When I'd started golfing (kinda late in life) I started out ‘on the cheap' in case I didn't like it (no: really!) - shopped online and found a “boxed set” of Top Flites (driver to putter), bag included, for like $125 and a two-wheel pull cart for $25. Well, clearly by the start of my next season the Top Flites were sold off and almost new TaylorMade R9s and Cobra Baffler hybrids, and a Cobra S2 driver, were acquired. That basic pull cart stayed on, though, and even continued to provide good service for a few more seasons.

But then after I retired and started playing more (and started down the dangerous road of club ho'dom) the old pull cart felt in need of an upgrade…

Story: last year (2015)...

Did some research online, read some reviews, looked at different models in stores and decided that a 4-wheel push cart was the way to go - primarily as they're considered more stable going up and down (and across) hills. Wanted something that I and my wife could move around a course without too much struggle.

Ended up with the then-new ClicGear 8.0 … the so-called “Cadillac” of 4-wheel push carts.

(Hey - if you're gonna splurge .. may as well go all the way….)

Everything seemed great about it at first, but after a bunch of “in-field” uses the original lustre started to wear off… It is a bit of a trick to get it opened, and later closed; it has a large ‘footprint' when opened; it didn't accommodate my stand bag well - I had to manipulate the upper arms through the space between the bag and the stand arms in order to get the bag to sit snug; but the worst part was the weight … it's actually a workout to push that thing + your full bag up a steep or long hill.

So my buyer's remorse was having me look at potential replacements, but the cheapskate in me was saying no no just make it work…

Story: now…

Then I happened across Da Judge's member review of the BagBoy Quad XL. I had looked at this one, among others, when I was originally searching but can't recall specifically why I'd passed it over. Anyway, based on his rave review of it - and that “50off” deal! - I pulled the trigger.

We had a relatively mild day here in NY, especially for almost Christmas - it got up to hi 40s with some partial sunshine and only a moderate wind - so took it out for a spin in the afternoon, and .. I couldn't be happier!

* Chalk it up as another “Win” for MGS member reviews!!!

Judge did a great overview of the product, so I'll just move right into what I see as the…

Highlights of using the BagBoy Quad XL:

Features:

  • Lighter (much!) vs. the ClicGear 8.0

  • Easy (very!) to open and close

  • Very compact folded; can optionally remove the wheels via a push-button on each axle for an even smaller package.

  • Upper bag bracket has an ‘indent' specifically designed to fit a stand bag

    • In fact - I could slide mine in from a few inches above the bracket and have it settle into the indent such that I did not even need the strap around the top!

Detail of stand bag's arms settled into cart's upper bracket.

(Note I have the cart strap folded away _behind_ the bag.)

  • Large diameter outer bracket arms can hold cart or staff bags.
  • Lower bracket support is large enough to hold any bag, and there are rubber sleeves around the lower tubes to help hold the bottom of the bag in place (no lower strap needed).

  • Bag sits almost vertical, at a slight angle, so all clubs are in view and ‘at hand' and easy to reach and slide in and out, without rubbing grips.

  • Bag sits snugly and is held in place without rolling over to one side or the other; feels 'connected' to the cart.

  • Whole cart feels solid and stable with a low CG.

  • Cart appears to be well-made and durable.

  • Grab bar handle has a nice cushiony grip, and the piece is easily height-adjustable.

  • There's a smartphone / GPS holder (with a bungee strap) just inside where your hands are on the grab bar so it faces you and you can quickly futz with your device on the go.

  • Integrated drink holder right on the top of the console is a nice touch.

  • Storage pouch is reasonable, not overly large but there are extra loops on each side of the push bar arms to clip on/hang other stuff.

  • Hand brake engages/disengages easily and holds the right rear wheel.

On the course:

  • Rolls easily, feels balanced and is very maneuverable, and easy to steer - the length of the push bar arm gives you a bit of leverage to push down / lift the front wheels..

  • Handled moderately hilly terrain, and navigated around large grass mounds, easily and felt stable the whole time.

  • Lower tube structure designed to offer good ground clearance.

  • Brake help the cart still while I had it pointed straight downhill on a fairly steep (approx 30 degree, maybe) incline.

  • Unexpected bonus: after the round on a course totally littered all over with geese poop - the tires were fairly clean, only a few small spots that I could easily kick off.

Yours truly out on the course in late Dec with his new buddy BagBoy.

"We" ;-) are on the tee of #3 / Par 3 which is 150ish with a big pond in front of the green (so all carry). For some strange unknown reason - that I really wish I could know what it is, so maybe I could do it again - all my tee shots that day were going long-left (as opposed to my more usual short-right); high draws mostly pin high but 20 - 30 yards wide. Hmmmm. Anyway, second tee shot here hit the middle of the green (yea!) though it rolled out to the back fringe (but still not so bad).

Thanks guys!

Yeah - good match, huh? But really am happy with this one. Went back and got one for my honey, too!

So now I have two perfectly good ClicGears to clean up and put on Craigslist......

Quick Update:

A few years .. and a whole lotta miles .. later I'm still luvin' this pushcart! Still solid, still works great and has been maintenance-free -- the only very minor "fix" I've had to do is tighten the four small screws on the underside of the handle that secure the storage pouch.

Also earlier this year replaced my bag with a newer one (a Datrek Hybrid) that has "Top Lok" integrated onto it -- you just slide the bag into the matching part of the top bracket on the cart and it's in! No need for the top strap at all (I have it tied back but it can even be removed).

post your thoughts on it here after you get it, see if we have similar opinions on it

I know it's been a while but, how does it compare to other carts in size when open.  For some reason, expanded dimensions doesn't appear to be a notable spec in product literature.  I got the wife a TourTek 360 -- color being the more important attribute -- and she declared it too big.  I was trying to get info on the BagBoy Compact 3 but, this Quad XL has many color options.
