I got an Apple Watch as well. I already know there is a few golf apps for them. Don't know if I'll use them or not though

I've got "golfshot plus", and "hole19" apps ready to go.

I'll be comparing them alongside the V3, and soon, the V4.

I'm currently a V3 dependent player, as I never really trusted the gps based systems, and a quick check with the lasers is fast anyways.

I also seem to notice that the gps based players always ask for the laser read, if it's handy.

So if it ends up being close, I will be surprised.

But so far, I totally dig the iWatch...

I guess the "iWatch 2" has GPS abilities now, so I don't know how much they'll be dependent on the iPhone to work...

I have an Apple Watch and never used it in the golf course. Really can't play golf with a watch if any sort.

Just remember, the yardage is from your phone, not the watch. If you leave the phone in your cart and walk over to your ball the yardage will not be correct. I have tried it with my iPhone 5 and it ate up my battery. I have not yet tried it with my iPhone 7. I am sticking with my Garmin G6.

I guess that's my primary question as the AW 2 has built in GPS...so I'd love to see if any of the apps leverage that feature

It didn't, Foz was correct in that it just mirrors the phone. I'm guessing using its own GPS would really drain the battery. The series 2 watch didn't exhibit much drainage. I did notice the app "hole 19" didn't work on a few holes either.

The unit was very close to the the gps system in the cart.

With that however, numerous times it was much different from the laser. Which is why to me it's only useful on non-approach shots, or perhaps blind shots.

Not for pin hunters...

  • 1 year later...

Randomly saw this topic and figured I'd post with my thoughts and see if anyone had any updates.

I have the Series 1 watch which I got before I started getting into golf more seriously. Been using the Golf Logix app after playing with a few people that suggested it and doing some research. As mentioned in rosier posts, the gps location is based off of the location of the actual phone. Not a big fan of carrying my phone around on the course a lot - I like the idea of just tossing it in my bag and forgetting about it for a few hours. However, since I'm carrying around the phone I find myself looking at the phone more than my watch. Works pretty well but have had some cases where the yardage took a while to update which got annoying.

Debating on purchasing a gps watch/range finder for this season bust haven't made any decisions yet.
