Agreed. But in the article they were mostly highlighting the destination. Some of those places do look interesting!

So, I watched the short video of some of the holes at Lajitas and I have to say, NICE! However, if I played it, I see myself taking 1 to 4 penalty stokes a hole or hitting out of some really rough lies. Now that I think about it, if I only counted my penalty stokes, I might be able to finish close to par.

The course in Lajitas is a fun one. It's actually quite amazing to see such a nice track out in the middle of nowhere. And I mean.. Nowhere!!

Several years ago before the floods from the Rio Grande wiped part of the course there were 19 holes. What that 19th hole was; was a short shot over the Rio Grande shot to a green with an adobe arch structure where a large bell was hung. The shot was to hit your ball over the river and try and ring the bell. Of course the hole didn't count on your score but it was fun to try a few times. Also, they used to have two places one on each nine called the "Reload" where when you pulled up in your cart you could just help yourself to snacks and drinks, including free ice cold beer. All free!

It's an interesting place down there.

Wow .. talk about steep dues to join that club to get out onto their course.... Are playing privileges only granted after an extended period of good behavior.......

Found out about the Prison View golf from Skratch TV - first episode I watched. They put out some really good stuff.

Ooops. Just watched the vid - guards and staff only, no inmates allowed to play. Tho a few have jobs as groundskeepers; they interviewed one who's a "lifer" and he actually had a few sanguine comments.

Yeah, the Warden said that if the inmates were allowed to lay, then thier institution would be considered a Country Club Prison, not a hard core prison.

I dunno...  Playing golf is hard, frustrating work.  I suppose if they forced the inmates to play golf, it could be considered a form of torture.  Yeah, better not allow them to play.

Wow, that is unique! Guessing there are no Out Of Bounds markers anywhere... ;-)

(and certainly no Water Hazards)

 

Love the course guide, especially the hole where it cautions you to put smelly stuff on your ball to repel the crow!

I like to play remote golf courses around the U. S.  I've played in every state with the most remote course being North Star golf course near Fairbanks, Alaska.  The course is rough by "lower 48" standards but pretty interesting in that it is built on permafrost.

I've been wanting to play Furnace Creek Golf Course in Death Valley. That is the most remote course on my radar as of now...

Mackinac island in MI has a course or two. You have to take a boat to the island and once you are there either rent a pedal bike or take a horse and buggy to the course. No motorized vehicles allowed on the island. Beautiful place.
