Arrange *MY* Game - Pick 3 Clubs

dru_

Recommended Posts

So, let's have some fun. Sunday I'm playing in a 3 club tournament.  only 3 clubs + a putter.

Here's the fun part. I'm gonna let you crazies pick out the club selection...   :).

It's going to be cool to downright cold. (high is in the mid 40's)
The course is short, about 6000.
The fairways are narrow

The greens are fairly large.

I expect the course to be playing shorter than normal.

Longest hole is 500

Shortest is 130

Par 70

1w = 270

3w = 240

5w = 220

4i = 205

5i = 195

6i = 180

7i = 165

8i = 150

9i = 135

PW = 125

AW = 115

SW = 105

60* = 90

While in a normal round, the GW is my inside of 50 club too, I'm comfortable using the SW in that area too.

My thought was 3w, 6i, SW, or 4i, 8i, SW, but I've never played this format before, and figure I'm likely to see a big number, so let's have some fun with it.

So it is, I place my fate in your hands.  You have a cold boring saturday to assemble my bag :).

I played in 3 club tournament once, but that included a putter,  and did pretty well with 5i, 9i and putter.  The 4i and 8i would also work, but I much prefer chipping with a 9i over an 8i.  It all depends on the yardages of the par 3's IMO.  Since you get one more club than I did, I would go with the 3W.

Since you get a putter plus three other clubs here is what I suggest:

Driver

7iron

SW

Putter

You might get in the sand a few times and if you have deep traps and can't get out, there goes your chances.  SW or some high lofted club would take care of those shots requiring loft around the greens.  You could bump and run the 7 iron if needed and the driver will put you out there to shorten the holes up for your attack.

What are the lengths of the par 3 holes?  I try to pick a set of clubs that will allow me to make as many full swings as possible..  That means leaving full wedges or mid irons into par 4's and 5's.  If the course is really only 6000, I would take 50°, an 8 iron, and probably a 4 iron if it fits into longer par 3's..  The wedge is imperative around the green..

I hope your par 3's are not 120-165.

Well, the event got rained out, so we'll do it again in the next few weeks.

A couple of follow ups. The par 3's are:

#4 is 150-170 depending upon the tee box setup. I expected it to be set about 155, but the hole plays a little long, and short is the safer option.

#6 is 160-180, if you are going to be short, 135 is the better location. anything long, and you are pitching back onto a green that slopes away from you.

#8 is 180-195. Downhill. Both ways. In the Snow. Oh wait, wrong story. It's downhill, and though I've played this course for 6 years, I still haven't dialed that hole in.

#12 is the hole that concerns me the most. It's 140, and plays closer to 120 most of the time. The plan was to play this with a 3/4 swing 6i if I felt I needed to be aggressive, but the safer play was a full swing SW, and then a controlled up and down into the green.

#17 is 120 on a tough day, and 110 set up short.  I frequently play is with closed face 56 anyways, so no sweat.

I've been hosting a tourney like this for several years now, it's so much fun and really make you work for it.

We do 3 clubs only, so your Putter counts as one, most people putt with their wood or hybrid of choice. My brother in law usually uses his driver and shoots in the low-mid 80s.

I usually go 4w, 8i, SW, myself. Good luck when it comes back around!

Looking at this list and judging from your yardages from earlier, I would carry Aw, 7i and your choice of long club, but I would trend to the 4i.  Most par 5's you should be able to reach with 4i, 7i and 7i.  Par 4's should be 4i 7i with your length.

You might really be surprised at how well you score..  just play to your yardages, and swing away!

We were a small country club in the northern part of Louisiana, which was in the middle of the piney woods. Only 250 members. Let me tell you, we had some fun! As a private club, we could do a lot of things that you could not do at a muni. If we drank a beer a hole one week, the next we would do bourbon shots. There were about a dozen of us that really used the club and we enjoyed it.

This sounds eerily like my suburban home course...  Private club. just over 100 full golf members, another 100 or so social or swim & tennis members, and another 300 playing rights members from a sister club that is about 2 miles away.  Our core group of golfers is about 35 players (and growing).

And truth be told, the course is in great shape, but alot of people don't think to try it out because it's short, and it is.  The thing is, most of us find that our handicaps playing there are high compared to the people we play with at other area courses. It is a course the penalizes wild shots. Whereas most of the courses around here you can spray it pretty wide and still be in play :).
