Vision Golf Ball - US Test Pilot Project - MyGolfSpy

Hi Hen,

Glad to hear your wife found the Pinky to have merit against the Solaire,

the more I encourage players to dial in the balls feel/sound and speed off the their

current putter the better the results for sure.

Confidence in gaining the ability to contol how far a ball will go when putting is one

of the great keys to lowering your score.

Cheers, Boz.

Well, whaddya know, I actually got to PLAY GOLF today. And, as payment for my drought, I got to play at Beverly CC. I brought out the sleeve of X3's to see if they were up to the test. I will keep my review pretty simple:

Driver: Good. Similar length to most balls the I've played, and seemed to be quite straight. A couple slices, but that was my knee, not the ball. The ball did perform well in the wind, which there was plenty of today. Seemed to fly on a lower trajectory than other balls.

Irons: Satisfactory, though perhaps a bit short. Not sure about this, but a couple shots didn't seem to get to my normal distances. Could have also been a gust of wind.

Putting: Good. Greens ranged from quick to wet & slow, but I putted well on all of them.

Wedges: This is where the ball fell out of contention for a gamer spot. On short chips (10 yards or less), the ball is fine. On half wedge shots (40, 50, 60 yards) which are my favorite & my specialty, this ball does not spin enough. I hit my best shot of the day (36 yard chip) and watched it roll 10 feet past the hole.

Misc: The ball doesn't seem to cut, but it does scuff a bit, and seemingly does so easily. After 1 or 2 holes, the ball had that scuffed feeling to it. Not a major problem, and it didn't impede my play, just an odd thing that I noticed.

FINAL POINT: The glove still f***ing rocks. Going back to a regular glove would probably be a rude awakening after having this much tack and grip.

I will be playing Sunday and then next week Saturday, so more reviews will come.

Hi Matt, good info and yes the ionomer covers wont give you the urethane spin that you

are used to and that is ok as that is how they were designed, grip with controlled release.

For a few of you guys you know I don't have a Premium Tour Design in place yet so what you

see is a E6 / NXT Tour towards RX3330 type ball in the X3 series.

In regards to the cover shearing, the material can be partially restored after play, try

cleaning the ball with a light scouring pad and some cream cleanser like ajax and you will

find most of the marks and roughness will be removed.

Glad to hear the glove is still making a good impression. :)

Thanks for the support,

Boz.

Boz,

I have a scramble coming up in three weeks from tomorrow. I don't care what it costs me, I have to get a sleeve or two of the Pinkys, so I can win long drive and drive at least half of the 6 drivable par 4's (I consider anything under 365 drivable). Let me know if that is possible and what I need to do to make it happen.

Thanks,

Hi all first post here.

I'm one of Boz's test pilots back in oz. Good to see his balls over in the US and gaining some popularity. He provided a link and sang the praises of this forum for a few of us to have a look at.

I'm one of the high handicappers boz is trying to help with his game improvement balls.

I only started playing nearly 3 years ago and having never really swung a club in my life I was suprised at how hard this game actually is. I havent had a lesson in that time and have been learning through reading and tips from my playing partners. I have 2 young kids 4 and 2 1/2 so once they get a little older I will get some lessons and join a club and get out there and play more regularly then i'll worry about my high scores :(

I used to shoot in the 150s when i started and my best to date is 103 ,which i know is crap, but i have started playing really well I just have a few blowouts per round which makes hard to post a good score when you have 4 or 5 holes that amount to 35-40 strokes on there own :o Last game out I had two par 5s that i was hitting my third at from 100 out and the best I walked away with was a 7. I found my problem area of my game that needs to be addressed now which I am confident that with the help on an X3 i will be on my way!

I started using the standard UV's and unfortuneatly at the start I averaged 6 lost balls per round which was a killer but I think Boz may have liked the business :P As my game got a bit better and i got a little more consistent I got hold of a few of the X2s, to try a slightly higher spinning ball. I had a shocking slice so tended to stick with the UV's (plus i HATE white balls). I had alot of problems that needed addressing and with the help of another forum member back in aus he gave me a few tips that were an instant help and i still hear is voice after a bad slice :) Now days my swing is a mostly better and my ball of choice is a UVX3.

I can keep it fairly straight (I now have more trouble pulling balls to the left) as I often leave my driver in the bag for the first 9 holes as i'm more consistent with the 3 wood but the driver still brings out the slice in my swing. I have even managed to get these little X3s to stop on occasion with the full shots from the pw 9 and 8 irons. The feel off the putter is what i really like about this ball though i'm still not as good with them as I am with the old UV. Another problem i have is with slightly fat shots but thats bearable. I'm still chewing through my stocks of UV's version 2 I think as i am getting better I barely lose a ball a round these days which is good... but I really want to play the X3's. One thing Boz will have to work on is a few more no's or symbols on the UVX3s as not in my regular group there is a few of us playing them

Anyway thats my story thanks for reading. It looks like you guys have got a really good forum going on here so i will enjoy sifting through it. Alot of Boz test pilots hang around on an aussie forum if you guys ever want to jump on and see what were doing left me know and i'll post up the address as I dont know the rules on that sort of thing.

Is there anything more mundane than a white golf ball?

Finals are done and I am finally able to get to the course tomorrow to try out the vision equipment in game situations. I have been practicing around the green with them, but that is a lot different (for me) than game play. I will try and post my thoughts soon after.

May I be so bold to ask where do you normally try and land your pitch shots? By that I mean are you looking to land them at a point and the spin the ball close to the hole or?

There as been some comment about this is in Aus and the general agreement reached has been that the release of Boz's balls is constant and after allowing for the amount of roll one gets a different landing point plugged into the brain and the rest can be become child's play.

I totally agree with your comments about the glove. I got to the stage that I couldn't find a glove that I was happy with and went gloveless for a while until this thing turned up for a trail. Feel naked now without it :)

Decided to post my thoughts on here as Boz seems to be around.

Decided to give the Proto UV a go today & test it out with the UVx3. Started on 10th hole with the X3 . Hit 2 good shots GIR 2 putts for par. 11th tee. " No lake " Pulled out thge prototype. A crow flys over & perches in a nearby tree. Yellow ball back in the bag. Play a white one.

12 tee. " big lake" played the X3 2 good shots for bogey. Hit the prototype of 13 as it is the last hole on the back nine without water hazards.

Felt good off the driver & the irons. Is it better than the UVx3?. Hard to say after only a few shots. Will take me a while to get a feel for it when I can only play with it when there are no lakes in play. :)

Not surprised to find that a few of you are liking the glove. It has to be the best glove I have found so far.

Sarg. Next time , keep it a little bit shorter. that's a novel you wrote there. :o :(

Dang Boz... ya just keep impressing me more and more! I played the UV X3's yesterday for the first time. 18 holes and I didn't even come close to losing a ball. Love the way they almost glow and I can see them all the way to the ground, even on long drives. My GPS crapped out on me after two holes so I wasn't able to get correct yardages for comparison, but I had NO problem ripping that thing as far as I have ever hit on average. (What do you mean I'm suppose to charge the battery every now and then? LOL!) A couple drives were real boomers (well for me anyway).

I really liked the way it performed off the irons too. I was sticking the greens as well as, if not better than I ever have with this ball and am VERY happy with it. I didn't get much chance to use the wedges with it, as I was hitting the greens with longer irons and holding on them. (except for 2 sand shots and those went well too, but ya can't really judge a ball's spin from a sand shot)

I also came to a conclusion about my earlier comments concerning putting with the Vision balls. Uhnhhhhhh.... it aint the ball's fault. My flat stick is NOT working well right now and I have no idea why, but it'll come around. All my fault.

The glove still performs as well as it did the first time I wore it and this is probably going to be my "standard" for any glove performance in the future. No slip, just grip. :)

Another 18 coming up today and another model to play!! Woooot!! This is actually fun!

Keep it up and keep 'em coming!!!

For those half wedge shots that I referred to, I generally land the ball about 5 yards short (could be more or less depending on the green). I have read many comments on this thread about playing this ball to release, and I have no doubt that the performance is very consistent. For me, however, this shot is something that I practice a lot and use quite a bit on the course, so I don't have a strong desire to re-work it. As I said, in all other aspects this ball is a very strong performer and I am very impressed with it.

I pulled out the glove today, the fit is perfect, and as has been said, its very grippy. I did notice it seemed a bit hot, like perhaps it didnt' breathe as well as what I usually wear (FJ Sciflex or Cally Tech Series). Today was a perfect day for golf, 80 and zero wind, so it wasn't a probem. I liked the glove quite a bit actually, I'm just curious how it will perform on a 90 degree day. Hopefully we're done with that heat here. Curious to see how it wears as well. I typically get probably 4 or 5 playing rounds out of a glove before it gets demoted to a practice glove depending on the weather conditions.

Tyk. I have been using the glove for over 12 months now & have no problem with it being too hot in the summer heat. This is one of the reasons that I like this glove so much. Average summer temp would be around 32-35 deg C or between 90 & 100 deg F With days of over 75% humidity. Many gloves do not last long , as far as grip goes on those conditions but the Vision Sticky holds up really well.I have one in my bag, ( as a reserve ) that I have used for over 7 months. It looks like something dragged out of the Rubbish bin now but still Grips well.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the all the posts.

Hey Mat, fully understand your thoughts and that is why the third level for my ball

designs is now a project that makes sense. Low markers are now willing to give my

designs a run but I know what they are looking for in general having spoken to a

lot of better players over the past 10 years, so TV ONE is a work in progress but

I believe I am closer to getting there than not.

I am interested in Tyk'sand Pom's thoughts on the glove in warmer conditions.

Currently the material will breathe and wick moisture more through the

palm material which is a little different to the normal gloves that you

mention.

The other issue is the colour, I am running one colour to trial my designs in

being the grey/white but I am curious as to how much heat is absorbed

rather than reflected due to the slightly darker colour than the SciFlex off

white?

As you can now all see I am really mixing up my player types here in Oz in regards

to the TP team which has been great because everyone has been so keen to help

and who usually never gets asked about the gear they buy by any of the designers or manufacturers.

Thanks for the support,

Boz.

Sarg. Next time , keep it a little bit shorter. that's a novel you wrote there. :D :D :D

It takes me a few words to get out what i'm trying to say :P

Still no plans to come down this year? Played at bribie a couple of weeks ago with FGA guys got 12 i think all up. Super course if i'm still living here that will be the club i'll join its in superb condition for a superb price.

Had a craker of a round driving, the rest of the game needed help though. Only good approach shot for the day was an 8 iron in and managed to nearly stop the X3 dead 7 feet out. It bit and kicked a foot to the right, it feels good to hit a shot in which i get to repair my own pitch mark instead of every other lazy beggers.

Does not look good for Xmas this year. Too much work coming up. Might try to get down a little later next year if Possible.I seem to have suddenly developed a shot that starts with S. Never been qa problem for me in all the years I have been Chopping so will have to work on that in the next few weeks or the old Handicap will be going backwards again.

Last week I analyzed the UV X3.....today I played the Arctic White X3...Remember when I said the UVX3 felt like a rock last week?....well no way today!...The X3 was booming off the driver today....I thought about last weeks performance so I teed up the ball a little higher, using the yellow tee with the smiley face on it that was included in the package...I figured my balance must have been off so I played the ball more to my center than my left foot.....the result was very acceptable...and the Arctic White made it easy to spot my ball down the fairway from the others.

Hybrids and fairway woods were fantastic.....great feel off the ball either when I swept the 3 or 5 wood or when I pinched the 3 or 4 hybrid.

Irons were solid.....only issue here is I was leaving my clubface open resulting in a push to the right with my 5, 6 & 7....great feel and response using the 8 and 9 irons....Used my SW quite a bit as the greenside rough is in high bllom and was thick as spinach....my issue here was I played the ball too softly. It came out of the rough well, but I failed to give it enough ummmph to get it to the green....and sometimes it only landed in the rough closer to the green.

Today, my putting was "hands like a rock"...I had no feel as most every putt passed over the hole and kept going....used the same putter as last week...Ray Cook Blue Goose 3.

Midweek I went to the practice green with 5 putters and putted for 1 1/2 hours. Although the UVX3's and Arctic White X3's provided a different feel with each putter, the end result was usually the same...No one putter was better than another...These are the five putters I used:

1-Ray Cook Blue Goose 3

2-Ray Cook Gyro mallet

3-Slotline High Moment Inertial (Original design from the 80's)

4-Slotline SL781

5-Scotty Cameron Newport 2

The order above is the order I decided after putting with both the UV and the Arctic White. Note that the most expensive putter is at the bottom of the list.

Overall, I prefer the Arctic White X3 over the UVX3....but will continue to use both.

I did lose an Arctic White on hole # 13 today. 160 yards to the green over a pond...I left my weight on my right foot which caused me to skull the ball. It skipped across the pond dying about 4 feet from the other shore. For a moment, I thought it was going to skip across.

To date I have lost one UVX3 and one Arctic White X3....at this rate I should have several rounds left before I have to go back to my Callaway & Maxfli's.

Very Important.....I have been fascinated at the difference in construction of the hats, ball marker, tees & towels from Oz....different than USA stuff....the towel is much higher quality and feel than USA golf towels.....the hats have a different sweatband...one that really works, the Tees are fatter, but performed well, but the ball marker is defintely different....Why?..when I had to move my marker out of my partner's putting line, I flipped it over, as I always do to remind me that I must replace it to it's original position, err I get a 2 stroke penalty, well as I flipped the marker over, and went to remove my putter, the marker stuck to the bottom of the putter. I had to re mark...In the USA, the magnetic ball markers have the magnet in the part attached to your hat, whereas the OZ mfg ball marker has the magnet in the marker. Definitley the opposite as Oz is the land from down under.

The glove definitly Rocks!...used it all day, felt like I was a tree frog when holding the club. Note to self:I must get more gloves from Oz!

Also wore the Teal Hat....everybody noted the Vision logo on everything today. They wanted to know what brand was making this stuff....When I said Vision, they still said "who?"..then I would tell them about the Boz from Oz.

Playing tomorrow on Labor Day (hooray..3 days of golf in a row!)....gonna try the UVX3 again....but will have the Arctic White if I can't get the UV off the driver.....now if I only had a Vision Golf Shirt.....

Hi Foz, nice write up with good info as a comparison with your first go around. What will be interesting for some of you will

be how your perceived feel/results will alternate during this process.

My experience over the years has lead me to believe that most players through variations in timing and their own physical conditioning will result in totally different efficiencies in their ball striking and when its not on it just wont feel right no matter what balls or clubs are in use.

Glad to hear the Vision Team gear is making a noise, I have always been interested to see if there was a way to take on the Tour brands with this alternate take on belonging to /supporting a brand

Cheers,

Boz.

People are definitely very curious about the balls and the gear Boz! Golfers just can't pass up something new ya know! I wore the hat today and its going to be one of my favs I can tell. Didn't play the balls because I didn't really feel like paying attention to what I thought of it. Probably give the Gel a try tomorrow though!

Thanks Tyk, see that is what I like about this process as you know its pretty cool to be the guy that has access to a design studio and you can see the presentation of all the little things I do is like the balls themselves in that they always draw questions from other players for being atleast different and usually in a good way. Like I said earlier it can be a lot of fun to be

part of my team.

Take your time on trialling the different balls or it will start to mess with your head

and then your game.

Cheers,

Boz.

Labor Day.....My 3rd day in a row playing golf....what a joy it is to live in Florida....Today's rounds will be 2 4somes using Modified Stableford points totaling the net +/- points from our weekly averages.....this means every shot counts ....or doesn't.

I chose the Fantom as my projectile of choice....hoping to gain some distance with the lower compression.

1st drive of the day was a flop....I came up over the top with my drive and the ball went to the edge of the fairway....a very long way left to play....in the rough, so I used a 4 Hybrid and smashed it well down the fairway, 170 yds. Back in the game, I was still 170 out to an elevated green. I hit the 4 hybrid again and absolutely smoked it...heading directly towrad the pin, but unfortunately a little breeze dropped it 5 yds short of the green. Although I did not score well on this first hole, I can still remeber the feel of the Fantom when I hit it square with my 4 hybrid.......sweet.

2nd hole was a 145 yd par 3...my 7 iron was hit well, but I pulled it into the bunker...pin high....again, nice feel off the clubhead....chipped out of the bunker and 2 putted for a bogey.

3rd hole put me in the rough again as I hit into the trees on the right and it kicked back just in front of the fairway. I grabbed my 4 hybrid and bombed it back into the fairway just 95 yds off the pin...overshot my wedge and took a six. Not a good score but striking the ball well away from the tee box.

On the 4th & 5th holes I found my drive.....long, sweet and right down the middle...bogey, bogey.

The day continued, using the Fantom as if it were a Bridgestone or a Callaway....great feel off the clubhead, reasonable release off the wedges. I was scoring my average game....finishing with a 92...+3 on my points for the day.

I used my Ray Cook Gyro putter today...it's a mallet with a backstryke type shaft.....The Fantom rolled smoothly off the face.

Hole number 18, the last hole, par 4. My drive left me at 170 to the pin...again I reached for my 5 wood and smoked it to 8 feet left of the pin.....made the put to end my round with a biride.....BTW, we won the game at total net points +22 versus +15....

Overall, I really liked the feel of the Fantom over the Arctic White X3 and the UV X3....so far......stay tuned.

Hey Foz, That was what I was hoping to see as the core setup would be more to your liking as it plays hotter for the sub 95mph avearge swingspeed players.

I hope the Gel-V Arctic and probably the Gel / Pinky also give you the feel and boost you might like to see out of your gamer ball.

Thanks, Boz.

Get use to it :)

My wife makes off with a ball out of every dozen cracked open. She seems to think they make an excellent cat toy!

A couple more review thoughts later in the day after rocking 72 holes in the last two days

Boz is amazing to work with. Worked up the great custom number design in a flash. Balls got to Cali from Oz even faster. I can't wait to see the reaction at the tournament honoring Coach Mattos later this month.

Those are brilliant! I hope everyone enjoys them Sactown.

More thoughts

A: Everyone that I've given the glove to loves it, interlocking grippers exempt

B: Pinky is definately the ball for me as much as I like the X3. I don't tend to play a lot of flop shots and the Pinky has a good controlled release that I've finally dialed in. It's a little more clicky off the face but again, I like that as I have a bad putting habit of not needing to look where the ball is, so I tend to gauge the shot by the sound.

C: The tour ball is too soft for me by some of my friends loooove them. They're not quite as "spongy" as a Pro V1 but don't seem to loose anything around the green in terms of spin even with the new wedge grinds. The only downside they seem to have is off the driver. His problem was two fold A: the ball felt like it wasn't even there to him. Frankly, that's what all the super soft balls feel like to me so it might just be him B: I actually out drove him for the first time ever. He was mollified when he shot par on the hole and I double bogeyed though heh.

Hi AW, Perfect that is where I thought you might like to end up

and please note the next UV and TruBlue release will use the specs

from the PINKY, just so you can either go HiVis or :P less questions on your colour choice from the guys.

Great info on the TV, the core formulation wasn't really set up to max out the full shot feel or COR (core speed) so I believe we should see some good results with this cover formulation on the core/mantle structure in terms of distance and a more solid feel. :D Cheers, Boz.
