Callaway MB irons

I hope this will be their 2017 offering (looks like an old school blade),  although I really liked their very first set of Prototype blades Callaway that kind of went with the Forged irons. Still to this day I feel the 2 best players sets of irons Cally ever made.

You won't be getting your hands on these if I had to guess. Supposedly that pic is of the ones Rory is testing (although I don't believe it).

They are the same as the ones Jason Gore was messing around for a bit with last year. Too bad bc they are good lookin.

Those as well. Guess it's kinda hard to reinvent the MB. Nike did do a good job with the vapor line but it never caught fire

Speaking for myself, I think the typical older MB player is like me - sort of old school or conservative.

The Vapors were probably really good, but you probably need to be a younger guy to have an eye for them.

I can see that being the case, maybe if they were just the satin finish it would've been better. For me they were very good with shots near the toe which is where my miss tends to be.

Pretty easy to sort out when you consider the big picture.

Callaway has no financial arrangement with Rory - and Rory has said that what's in his bag this week could change next week. From Callaway's perspective, it has no short term, let alone long term guarantees that McIlroy will continue to play its products. In the event that he plays well, wins, etc., the nature of the arrangement (or lack thereof) means that Callaway cannot promote or otherwise commercialize the fact that McIlroy has its stuff in his bag.

Sure, forums such as this one and others will disseminate that information, but compared the market as a whole, the reach is minimal.

So within that context, which makes more sense?

1. Callaway grabs an open mold or some other non-Callaway product, restamps it, gives it to Rory in hopes that they can cash in on some minimal amount of promotional value.

2. Callaway gives Rory something akin to a prototype - a not finalized product that won't be ready for retail for several months as a means to 1) give him something that aligns with his personal preferences and 2) gives him a sense of what Callaway's R&D department can offer should he decide he wants to sign another equipment deal.

JWall and NoLayingUp at twitter are saying otherwise

They used to deny Tiger was playing Mizuno irons at the beginning of Nike clubs as well. Tiger also played a "Nike" ball that was Bridgestone. No one would ever admit it until years from now.

All Nike balls were produced by Bridgestone for quite a while, not just Tigers. This has been public knowledge for some years now.

The irons I didn't think were Mizzy but I'm honestly blanking on it and don't feel like looking. You could be right there.

First thing to remember is that Callaway isn't Nike. It has R&D capabilities that Nike simply didn't have when it spun up a hard goods business, so there not a fair comparison to be made there.

A bit off topic, but regarding Tiger and the Bridgestone ball, this is a point that requires clarification because I think it's often misinterpreted.

Nike designed their own golf balls. Bridgestone manufactured them.

Along similar lines:

Dean Snell designed the Snell Golf Ball, they're manufactured in a Korean factory.

TaylorMade designs its golf balls, the bulk of the manufacturing is done in that same Korean factory.

Same holds true for hard good.

Nobody ever considers the factory that produces Titleist drivers, right, but the relationship between Titleist and that factory doesn't differ much from Nike and Bridgestone before Nike moved to RZN and shifted ball manufacturing to a different 3rd party factory in Taiwan.

One designs, the other manufacturers.

Going back to my point, it was only confirmed by Tiger just a couple weeks ago via Twitter. People "knew", but it wasn't confirmed by the player until many years had passed. Point I'm making on Rory's is the same, I may be wrong, but it could be a similar case that they are just stamped Cally and he doesn't admit for some time to come.

Anyway...

Why would a player comment about that though? That isn't his job. Most may not even know as much as the equipment junkies in the forums. My point was just that it has been public knowledge for a while that Bstone made them for Nike. I personally don't see the big deal in that. Like T mentioned, it's not like they designed the ball.

If I were them(pros) I really wouldn't care. I can almost promise Rory doesn't care. It took him less than a morning to pick his last gamer Nike Driver. I doubt he blew up Cally about the irons when he isn't even under contract with them.

Btw I wasn't disputing they(irons) could be something else. I had just mentioned they looked a lot like the ones Gore tested last year.

T is the one with the real inside knowledge up there.

Yea, but the circumstances as to why you would think they might be stamped as callaway are completely different.

And they're not stamped. They're manufactured by callaway.  Just because something happened once, over a decade ago under completely different circumstances, doesn't mean we need to be suspicious every time a pro puts a new bladed iron in play.
