Popular Post hckymeyer
I can't even count how many times I've seen posts on various forum's asking where to buy black putter shafts. Happens all the time, and while swapping a putter shaft is pretty easy, this is a whole lot easier. All you need is polyolefin heat shrink tubing. Just take off the grip, slide it down over the shaft, and then apply heat. Today I decided I wanted a black shaft on my Evnroll ER5 putter. Here's the before picture. I already wanted to change the grip so I just cut it off with a utility knife and cleaned up the grip tape. Then just slide the tubing over the butt end all the way down to the head. Make sure to get it all the way down because it will shrink a little bit when you heat it up. A quick tip is to just heat the very end next to the head, maybe the bottom 2". Then you can still push it down again so you don't see any shaft next to the head. Here's the shaft all shrunk down before the grip goes on. I blow my grips on with air so after that step I just put on one layer of blue painters tape and then blew on the Superstroke for the finished product. All done! Quick and easy matte black putter shaft. Took me about 5-10 minutes total time. The best part is that this stuff comes in a ton of different colors so it's easy to create a very unique putter. I should also mention this stuff is dirt cheap. You can easily find 15' for under $10 shipped on ebay. That's enough to do 4-5 putters depending on what length you play. If you're interested just search 5/8" Polyolefin Heat Shrink Tubing on ebay and find something that looks good. Have fun! JBones
Awesome. I've used heat shrink for years on various tools and want not, but never even crossed my mind to use it on a shaft. I'm gonna do a black shaft on my Ketsch and paint fill with high gloss black. I would think the thickness of the heatshrink would make it hard to get the grip on....looks awesome Depends on the grip, but it's basically just a few layers of tape. Nothing different than building up the grip a few wraps. Superstroke was tight, but I got it on with a little elbow grease edit: You could also just cut the tubing right at the end of the grip so just the very end is tucked under the grip. Thanks for the heads up! Should work the same on irons shafts too huh? Might add a couple grams of weight, but the tubing itself would work. I have a buddy that owns a paint shop and he's painted a few different iron shafts which has also worked very well. A knick in the paint wouldn't be a huge deal, but I would think a knick in the tubing would eventually keep spreading and peal off. YMMV but the shaft in a putter isn't doing a lot and the weight isn't noticeable to me. cnosil
I guess on on the other side of the coin and think that vibrations contribute to feel and do come up the shaft I know grips will significantly impact how a putter feels. I just think the wrap may dampen the feel But for a few bucks it would be a fun experiment. hckymeyer
For a heat source I use a heat gun. Not sure if a hair dryer would get hot enough, it may but it would take longer. I just weighed the stuff I have. 34" of if weighs 16 grams. So just under 1/2 gram per inch. Since the weight is distributed evenly over the entire shaft I really can't tell the difference. I also have not noticed any "dampening" effect on feedback. If I hit it on the toe or heel I can still tell. You can get 8' for $7 shipped. That's easily enough to do 2 putters. Pretty cheap experiment if you want a black shaft and if you don't like it you can just cut it off.
