Black putter shafts?

Recommended Posts

In this video at MGS HQ, Adam states that black putter shafts outperform steel shafts. Is there a link to this study, or thread? I cannot find it.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v18_i_SByu0 Right around the 16:00 mark.

Very interested in the EVNRoll putters which prompted this search.

Thank you in advance for steering me in the right direction.

I don't think it's ever been an actual article or MGS labs.  Just something mentioned in that video.

It would make a great MGS labs test though!

We have not published an article on this yet.

Basically how this came about was GolfSpy_Dave had completed some putter testing and I was having him look deeper in to some of the data he collected.  Kind of a discovery process we like to do after we complete our tests.  There is almost always some amazing things we learn from this type of research.  Sometimes we apply it to our knowledge base and sometimes it is just an interesting tidbit that need more exploration.

This is one of those times.  Right now it is something both Dave has seen and we have seen as well.  But until we do a bigger study we will not know for sure.

Jeff, where are you located? I see you are in upstate SC, well you can't get to much farther upstate than I am. I am located in Fort Mill. I play the majority of my golf at Springfield golf club.

I looked for a welcoming post in the introduce yourself thread but didn't see anything so I thought I would ask here, and welcome to the forum.

Seems like this could tie in nicely with the data Ping found in the eye tracking article.  A black shaft maybe doesn't pull your eyes away from where they should be focused.  Similar to why they moved their shaft labels.

I will take a few when I get home tonight.  It is a proto for a new finish David was working on and have 1 of the 2 that were done. It is a great stick and almost too pretty to take out on the course.  Almost.

A few pics of my TP Mills that were requested. Apologies for the crappy pics all I have is my phone at the moment.

And being a large gentleman and having a putter named Fatso is kind of appropriate. Funny part is my wife almost sent it back to David when she saw the cavity stamping figuring it would hurt my feelings.

It's always good to start out a putter with a clean slate. I've found having a simple flat black putter shaft with no labels or distractions can improve your putting. It helps kee you eye focused more on the putter head or your spot.

FST makes a really good Flat Black .370 putter shaft I like to use in all my putters (no double bends). It's only $13 from Golfworks so it's relatively cheap and it has a really good feel to it. If you're playing Scotty's you'll need to get one from somewhere like Putter lounge since Cameron takes a .355 shaft.

I think I'm going to order that putter head and give it a roll. Looks interesting.
