Is Thomas the new Spieth?

Recommended Posts

It wasn't so long ago that Jordan Spieth was the next in line for super stardom, but a Masters blunder caused him to fall back to earth. Justin Thomas has skyrocketed to the top young player in the game. Is he there to stay or will he have a meltdown that brings back to reality?

Here to stay he has what Jordan lacks which is distance. It's a heck of a lot easier to hit wedges than irons into greens.

Fair question, but I don't think he's the top young player in the game. He may be trending that way, but I need to see him have a year like Speith did two years ago to grant him that. He does have more of a skill set to allow him to overpower a course ala DJ or Day but I want to see him go up against those guys at the Masters - at WGC events - at The Players - and we'll see what type of consistency he has.

Gotta have a major or two before we start talking crazy. He's a great young player but the mental game in a major is a completely different beast. Gotta prove it there.

Still a lots of chapters to be written in this book.

I believe he did beat Jordan a lot when they were playing Junior and College golf. In his first appearance at The Masters he finished 39th. Not too shabby for your first go round there. He definitely has the length to win any major. I'm curious to see how his overall game holds up at Augusta.

I tweeted on Saturday, outside of DJ and Rory, he may be the player I enjoy watching the most.

LMFAO

True!  but DJ makes either one look like a 15 year old girl hopped up on Mountain Dew who just got her first cell phone :)

Personally, I believe Thomas will be far more streaky of a player while Spieth will be more consistent on a more regular basis.  The main reason for my assertion is putting.  That's not intended to be a knock on Thomas.  Very few players in the history of the game can putt with the level of accuracy and consistency as Spieth.  Both have extremely bright futures.  I cannot wait to see Thomas in Ryder Cup competition.

Thomas teaming with Reed in the Ryder Cup will be fun to watch

I think he wins a major this year and if he does, it's on like donkey Kong

JT peaking too early in the year. As mentioned before, let's have this convo when he gets a major.

A lot of guys are assuming he's going to win a major this year. He's off to a great start, but the Lee Trevino quote, "the big armadillos don't come out until after midnight," comes to mind. Let's see how this plays out before we decide he's the next anything.

Someone always wins or gets on a run early in the season and seems to falter out when things get hot. Scott and Day did it last year. Spieth is being sneaky good so far as well (3rd &2nd) . Also for the Thomas>Spieth argument I'd have to see him handle a high pressure situation. Yes he hit a one in a million shot to seal the deal at the TOC, but he doesn't have the polarizing effect that players like Rory and Jordan have.

In my opinion, and yes I could be wrong I think that JT could dominate more courses because of his length and ball striking when his putting is on point. Speith is that annoying guy at your course who is an average ball striker (in comparison to others on tour) and gets up and down and makes putts when he needs to. way too early to tell but JT is like another Rory to me, length and great ball striking but will come down to putting.
