What other obsessions do you have?

Other than golf, what are your other obsessions.

 

For me it's coffee, wine and recently barbecue has crept in.

 

Ive been roasting beans in my shed for about 10 years, and the coffee I make on my high end espresso machine is as good as any I can buy in a cafe.

 

I've got a tiny Shiraz vineyard out the back which is finally starting to produce. First batch is ok, but I'm looking to improve this vintage.

 

I got interested in BBQ about the same time I joined MGS, last Easter whilst holidaying in Hawaii. Since then I've cooked up some great pulled pork with homemade rub and homemade North Carolina style BBQ sauce. Trying to build my skills before attempting a brisket.

I go bowling, mostly during the winter. I do leagues, but try to stay away from competitive ones. I'm decent and could Bowl in them, but people get crazy obsessed about it. So, I stay away. I do the fun ones that are just as much about drinking as bowling. I'll also do pot games from time to time for a little money.

Hmm other than work and family can't say anything comes close to golf. Working out would probably be next in line on the list. Followed by Cardinal baseball....Cubs suck....but man are they good!

Beside wrenching on my truck, it's BBQ, beer and wine.

 

I built a smoker a couple of years ago and have been hooked since. (Tip for the brisket @Peaksy68...go hot and fast. 325° F, wrap in non lined butchers paper after 4 hours and start probing the thickest part of the flat until it probes "like a hot knife through room temperature butter" after another 2 hours. Take it out of the smoker and leave it on the kitchen bench until it reaches 150° F or about 2 hours. Slice the flat against the grain and once you hit the point, turn it 90° and slice that, but only slice as much as you eat.) This spring I'm going to add another cooker to the arsenal in a wood fired rotisserie, again, built by me.

 

I homebrew beer and wine. The beer is all grain after starting out with extract kits. My house beer is Dr Smurto's Golden Ale and a Vanilla Porter. I also do a Summer Ale for the missus. The wine I do from kits, because it's a hell of a lot easier than stomping on grapes.

 

The beer takes about 6 weeks from start to drink, the wine takes about 5 months at a minimum.

Oh, actually this is the other obsession. My first love(s) are my bikes, and to a lesser degree, running. I do triathlons when I can, but I also endurance race bicycles ( road, mountain ). I run a few races each year too. I actually golf as cross training, walking and such, it makes for a great change of pace.

Now that said, I am obsessive, so I am 'gear centric'.

Not a hobby really, just an interest in it. I used it for work, it was required at the time. Still can be very useful at times. At a school I was at I got asked back to do a lecture on it last Fall and then the students (hand picked by the professor) had the chance to defend their position against me. It was a fun time for all involved and I've been asked back. This stuff can used for good too; not just doing someone over.

Like SuperDave, I use to bowl but haven't in a yr because they extended leagues to 36 weeks. Just too long. Thought I was better bowler than golfer. Ave just over 200, long time back did have a perfect game.

Also into cycles. Chopped a couple of em. day after finishing one, it rode out to Cali to meet friends.. 2500 + miles round trip. Only had a couple of things fall off. Lol

Recently I got a chance to use it down at the Italian Consulate to help out a friend and we won. This I still like to do if it is to help someone out. But, when I first retired I got offered a position at a top public relations firm to head up their critical strategy (code name for the dirty tricks department) but for me; that is not the way I would enjoy myself.

Fishing, specifically fresh water but I'll go out into the Chesapeake just the same. Just started this hobby up 3 years ago. I'm not good at either golf or fishing but the kids like both so it gives me options depending on how the kids are feeling.

I have a few.

• My Kid - Like any good parent, I am very involved in my daughters activities. We have never missed a Track Meet/Cross Country Race/Concert/Art Show/ect..., and never will. (I'm sure that she is getting a little sick of us)
• I play FPS Video Games.  I know I'm a little old for Video Games, but I have been gaming since 1981 when I got my Atari 2600 for Christmas. 
• I love to visit National Parks. We try to visit 1-2 new Parks every year.. It is getting tougher to find parks that are close to home that we have not been to.  
• I enjoy Photography. I am terrible, but I love it.  
• Running. If my body would hold up, I would run 50 miles a week.. As it stands now, I can barely manage 15-25 without some significant injury. Getting old sucks.

And since you didn't ask but I'll tell you anyway  did I tell you the funny story about the time I broke a course record in the morning, and would have re-broken the record that same day on my afternoon round, except  I stopped to get a cat out of a tree for an old lady, and had to pull a stranger form a burning car in the parking lot at the turn, only to be finally slowed up by rescuing a dog that had gotten snarled up in some barbed wire on the back nine, so I didn't get to finish the round.   

 

What really sucked, all that caused me to miss the detailing appointment for my Benz!!
