Fitting/model

Recommended Posts

This could be interesting.  I currently have a Ping G30 driver so it will be two models old in the near future, time to replace it.

My Pro shop is exclusively Titleist/Cobra.  Over the past 20 years I have done best with either Ping or Titleist drivers although I did have some success with an SLDR that was lofted way up.  My best drives with that are longer than my Ping but I'm far more consistent with the Ping and thus it stays in the bag - same thing holds true with an MI that I tried for a time.  I have never found a Cobra driver that fit me.  The same holds true for Callaway as it did for Nike - I had nothing against those brands and have gamed or do currently game other clubs made by Cobra and Callaway.

Titleist will do a full fitting at my course some time soon.  It will be outdoors, titleist brings balls in for it and it will include flightscope.  Further my course will check to make sure that I get what I order so I'm going to do it.  (Assuming that I find a fit that improves over my current driver)

But I am curious about the community here.  What's more important for you?  Is it brand or is it ending up with something that is properly fitted.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Both?

Ideally, I'm looking for a club which I like the look of first. If it looks good, then thats a good place to start from. Next is feel and sound. Lastly, the ability to be dialled into spec.

The last aspect is pretty much easy to do across most brands these days, but a lot of it has to do with the consumers willingness to assist in the process too. Many times, we see golfers not willing to try a particular brand because of the dreaded "there aren't any available near me" mantra. Often too, the brand perception and association has a lot to do with it. "Better player only" perception tends to put some people off, but by the same token if there's someone you don't particularly care for that plays a particular brand, then you're less likely to use the same either.

What I would say is play what suits you best in all those categories, because if there is even the slightest element of doubt or mistrust in the equation then you have a major problem with getting the best out of it.

Your mind will always be looking around the corner for "something better".

So "getting fit" is not just about the physical metrics of the clubs and how you swing, it's about the whole package of personal taste, feel and mindset too.

Good luck with the fitting.  Have fun with it.

Rev I don't care what brand I play as long as I get the results I want. Which is accuracy, shot pattern, and distance. Yes, I do care what a new driver looks like. I'm partial to traditional more pear shaped heads. I also like a sound that's not weird and the club has to "feel' right. There's a lot of good equipment out there. It's great that your fitting will be outdoors. To me that's the only way to truly see what's going on. Choose wisely and good luck with your selection. Should be fun.

It's what ever pulls the wagon the best without hitting every pot hole in Georgia. ;) â€‹ The mules don't have to be pretty as long as they get the job done.  The wagon can sound squeaky as long as it carries my big old arse to my destination.

With that said I do believe in well made quality stuff.  From the looks of my bag it looks like I'm a Cally brand homer however I go with what feels good to me and the numbers line up.  My new driver (Fusion) is not the prettiest out there however I'm feeling really good about it thus far.  I will get fitted for a proper shaft asap.

Performance is my first criteria.  If it performs significantly better than my current gear I am willing to game the club.  I have a wide assortment of clubs in my bag so obviously I don't really lean toward one brand.

When I was younger, it was brand and whatever worked best in that brand (Mizuno usually for irons) . Now, it's going to be whatever maximizes my swing to hit the most fairways and greens, although equipment can only go so far to fix my swing, lol

I really am a psychological disaster... looks are a big deal to me, and a few brands just aren't going in the bag.

I could go get fitted for anything, but if it doesn't look right, or if it's a brand I don't care for, it's not happening.

Once we get past all that, I'm all about dialing in my specs.
