GolfSpy Barbajo
First day of PGA Show week is in the books - spent at Lake Nona Golf Club at the Tour Edge Media Day. Tour Edge headlines the event with a batch a other companies to spread the word. Snell Golf, Golf Pride were the big names - but there were a bunch of smaller companies with interesting offerings. Here are some pics... This is a putting monitor from Ireland called Hole More Putts. (Holemorepitts.com). It's a little tablet that mines a ton of data about your putting stoke and offers online tutorials based on what it sees. Dean Snell spoke about his My Tour Ball and gave us the true story about how the Get Sim got its name. If the golf thing doesn't work out, he could do standup. New grip coming from Golf Pride - MCC's and MCC Plus 4's with Align technology. - a ridge on the back of the grip to make sure your grip is lined up properly. More pics to post - but I'm really sleepy. Will get more up in the am. GolfSpy Barbajo
Here are some more media day pix -- Tour Edge has some new stuff... That's the XJ-1 driver - super light driver, Kevlar crown, 911 Titanium body - which Tour Edge says is lighter than the normal titanium used in drivers and an SP700 Beta Titanium face. A 45 gram Fujikura Speeder is stock, and the overall driver weight is 265 to 290 grams. It's target is golfers with swing speeds in the 70-90 mph range. This the the new EX10 line of metal woods - should be out in February. Big news here is the Graphite Design stock shaft in both the driver and fairway. Hybrid has a Recoil stock. There's also a Beta version of the fairway wood. Tour Edge is also releasing a set of forged cavity back irons, due in April. Had the chance to hit the irons and metal woods on the range - really liked the driver. The standard FW flew high for me, preferred the Beta model, and the irons are wonderful, although Tour Edge admits they probably won't sell a ton of them. GolfSpy Barbajo
Lots of stuff on display at the range.... This is a training aid called Swing Coach. Gotta admit, I didn't get it... New shoes from Sketchers. Have never tried their shoes, but price is $100 for the spikeless, $130 for the spiked. New GPS watch from Sky Caddie here. Big news is that it includes tags for shot tracking. Don't need your phone, so it combines shot tracking capabilities with a GPS - what makes a ton of sense if you're looking for both. I here all kind of good things about the ball just cornfused Snell didn't have a booth at the show - they did take part in the media day to get the media up to date on what the company is up to and where it's going -- biggest news there is that they're slowing going to move into select retail channels in 2017 - mostly proshops. Snell says they're going to take it VERY slowly to keep growth under control. He also had private meetings with media folk (there were a TON of us) - so I can't speak for any meetings he may have had with pro shop owners/buyers, but he was busy with the media. McGolf
I like deals for golfers but the snell things seems like a hard road to hoe. I hope it works out for him. maybe I should look into it. Went to the hole out booth. it was getting some traction but it seemed they were still in the project phase. This would be a retail item. I was trying to wrap my head around making it into a fitting tool. I was trying to wrap my head around making it into a fitting tool. I'm not convinced on what they're thinking as far as price goes -- it's a lot of tech and data, but $459 is steep. I could see pros using it for lessons, but a retail version in the $250 range could make it. One of the things I like about Snell is that he really doesn't want to dominate - his goal is to stay small and only grow very slowly so that the business in manageable. He really doesn't want to take on Titleist or any of the others - just wants to sell some golf balls and make some money within in his business structure. He wasn't giving out volume, but he did say his business grew 400% in 2016. Says he and the kids will spend evenings putting balls into packages and getting them ready for shipping, etc. Small operation - but he keeps his costs under control. Doesn't have to be big to make a nice living... PlaidJacket
Isn't the "ridge" on the back of the grip old technology made "new" again? I recall a long time ago when grip choices were few I used to always re-grip with the green Golf Pride Victory grips. They had a subtle ridge you could feel under your lower hand. I see now on the GP site that they're re-releasing the Victory grip. In the old days they didn't last long I recall because they became slick and hard pretty quickly.
