When do you replace clubs

tony@CIC

Recommended Posts

As background I took up golf when I retired 5 years ago. My wife bought me a set of ping g20s back then. I play about 15 times a month from April til October. Additionally I do regrip on a regular basis

My wedges look a bit worn - but outside of technology changes do clubs really wear out?

You'll never wear those Pings out. Aside from wanted something new or something different, they'll live forever.

Your wedges may be a softer steel, and will wear out eventually.

If you change to a forged club eventually, they do wear out:

Wow. Impressive wear pattern. Bet the ball has no spin at all.

I use a groove tool occasionally to get the grooves back. May help here.

Not sure if the USGA approves as you are modifying your club if not done correctly. Remember the Wilson Driver v. Driver show and the retired USGA judge Frank? He has a website that talks about regrooving.

Love your dedication to your existing club

Not my club - just a pic I found for example. I would have updated long before they got that bad!

A good groove tool does help - it's kept my 2009 vokey wedges alive so far!

I agree that you probably won't wear out those G20's.  I have i20's and they still look great after years.  My old Ping Eye 2 wedges from the 1990's are still decent, but I switched to the forged SCOR wedges a few years ago.  More than likely you will want to change irons before they are worn out... it's a sickness.   :)

Nah, those Ping's will wear out. They changed steel around the i5 line and they don't wear like they used to. I change wedges at least every season, sometimes more. Drivers when the wind blows. Irons I've tried several to replace my gamers but haven't found any yet. Hybrids last the longest for me followed by fairways. Putters are like socks, rotate them daily

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

Some of mine get switched out when they displease me.  I have discovered that simply mentioning the "penalty box" often is sufficient to get them back on track.  Others have to learn the hard way... ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

I replace my clubs far too often. I've only golfed for 5 years....and the list of clubs that I've gone through is far too lengthy. I've settled down a good bit in terms of constantly buying, but there are still times where something new and shiny catches my eye :)

Just curious why you've changed clubs so often? I've only been playing for six years (play about 20 times a month from April through October). This is the first year I'm upgrading - but only because I didn't know what I needed the first time). Just bought new Cleveland wedges as recommended by my instructor. Also upgraded my hybrids.

First set of irons I had were cheap and didn't fit me. Same with my driver and woods. Where I live, the options of getting a good fitting aren't great, so the option that I had was Dicks Sporting Goods. After awhile, I eventually got fit for irons and woods which helped drastically, but before that I went through a number of clubs. Some of it were clubs that didn't fit, so I would sell or trade them for something else. Now that I have a set of irons and woods that I like, I haven't gone through as many clubs. I also have a tendency to try and sell/trade clubs just to tinker with other options. I enjoy trying various clubs and options for fun, and if I can do it by trading or selling to buy, then I go ahead and try it just to see how it goes.

Once I got into golf I wanted to learn not just about the game, but also equipment and terminology. I love learning about fitting, shafts and the specs of golf, which then drives the side of me that likes to tinker various equipment for fun.
