Who do you root for on tour?

Jiro

Recommended Posts

I don't get to watch a ton of the tour outside the majors but try and keep up with who is winning week to week. Probably the guy I like to root for right now is Jason Day. Top guy I root against is still Sergio--he plays the heel so well. Who do you root for? Who do you root against?

Don't really root against anyone.....have a few favorites I like to see winning or in contention:  Spieth, Kuch, Lefty, really starting to like DJ

I find myself rooting the most for the ones I see as the 'nice guys' on tour

Rory. I can't explain why I like the dude but I do. He seems to have a weird sort of awareness about himself and everything that's happening around him that is refreshing from a super star athlete. As an American, I especially like how he took the role of villain upon himself at this year's Ryder Cup. I feel like he knew exactly what he was doing and put on a great show.

I don't really pull against anyone. At least not that I can think of. I dislike Bubba alot but can't really say I root against him. I also sort of dislike Reed. Except team events when he turns into superman lol.

Other guys I pull for are DJ, Koepka, Thomas and others depending on the situation and week.

I tend to root for the underdogs, whoever they may be on any given week.  The top dogs are going to win a fair number of times, but when someone who doesn't get into contention very often is right there, I'm pulling for him to win.  If they have never won, or haven't won in a long time, I like to see them get a chance to taste the winner's circle.  As an example, I was an early fan of Stricker when he came back and started winning again.

The tournament last weekend in La Quinta was very interesting to me because everyone with a chance to win was not a big name.  Hudson Swafford has made 19 straight cuts, but hadn't won.  It was fun to see how he handled himself down the stretch.  With that said, of the big dogs I like the amiable types.  I like Spieth, Day, Thomas; I haven't warmed up to Rory or DJ yet.  Great players, but need better personalities.  I actually like Reed, although I know a lot of guys don't.  Someone that I would really like to root for is Matsuyama.  What a great player, but until he learns to speak English and interact with the other tour players, he is not on my list.  I would love to see him with Danny Lee's personality.

I don't like Tiger, Rory, DJ, Matsuyama.

I do like seeing a lot of young talented players on tour, They have a lot of talent, and many of them will win. Golf is fun to watch.

2 Aussies and a Kiwi... I can understand that.  Sergio?  I like him a lot better since he stopped waggling 15-20 times before a shot, and became a little more humble.  I have actually rooted for him the past few years because of his near misses.  If he could only putt consistently!

I like to root for Phil, DJ, Tiger, Speith, Stetson. Just for the fact they can make the impossible shots look so easy. I like it when it's an all out slugfest too - two golfers are going at it at such a high level that you just wish you were there live (British open 2016 comes to mind).

Matsuyama should hopefully get more interesting when he starts doing his own interviews (in english without a translator). Word is, that should be soon.

I do like Matsuyama as well. I am half Japanese so tend to root for the guys from Japan. This year looks like a year he could win a major.

I'd love to see Tiger or Phil win another major.

Typically I'll pull for Jordan Spieth Ryan Palmer and Jimmy Walker along with any of the other Texas boys then if a Texas A&M grad is in the field I'll go with them. After that it's fellas like Phil and your usual suspects. I try not to wish bad for any player out there but if a guy has a bad personality (had some eye openers volunteering at Colonial) I won't necessarily pull for them either.

The Texas Rangers are the home baseball team here and their pitcher Yu Darvish is the same as far as the language barrier goes. Got to meet him once and he didn't speak much English, makes it hard for fans to get a connection in any sport when there's a language barrier.

Glad you asked. I posted this somewhere else, but don't remember. I make my picks by region.

USA: Phil Mickelson (when retired probably Dustin Johnson or Patrick Reed)

Ireland: Rory Mcilroy

England: Andrew 'Beef' Johnston

Australia: Jason Day

Japan: Hideki Matsuyama

Canada: Brooke Henderson

I have a few more, but I think I made my point. When you watch golf on TV, you don't see everyone play. So, if you got options, you should see someone you're rooting for.

Yea but Yu is FILTHY when he is on. Check out the video of him throwing a slider left handed. Even it was pretty solid lol.

Matsuyama can apparently speak English very well. He just uses the translator so he doesn't have any slip ups. Kind of like a security blanket. A Cabrera is similar. He always uses a translator despite speaking great English. I think Matsuyama will soon start doing his own interviews though. Hopefully anyway.

@SuperDave Great call! How could I forget the Beef Johnston?! That dude is awesome.
