furu
Some rumours surrounding Mizuno. Will they do "a Nike" sooner rather than later? The problem for Mizuno is that they're famous for their irons. Not balls. Definitely not shoes and clothes, like Nike. They don't have any high profit products that can make them stay in golf. McaseyM
that. would. suck. BADLY. maybe they just stick with irons and wedges and even pare down the offerings? I haven't tried the newer driver, fairway or hybrid yet, but they also seem to be coming out with many lines of irons each year, between MP, MP-H, JPX EZ, 3 JPX number lines, then wedges that alter shape from year to year. Their bread and butter seem to be the MP line, may just offer MP, and 1-2 along the JPX line for GI and moderate forgiveness?? sixcat
Mizuno was conspicuously absent from the merchandise show last week. Could this be a rumor stemming from that fact or the first signs of them exiting the business? It's hard to say at this point but it would be sad to see. Mizuno has had some iconic iron offerings through the years.
03trdblack
Everyone should try out the JPX 900 driver because it's really good. I think Mizuno has more of a global presence than we in the US see, especially in Asia. They just choose not to bring all the products Stateside so it looks like they don't have much going on. Sort of the same as what Bridgestone does. My bag is a revolving door!
revkev
@MCasey - I fear that's wishful thinking on your part. If they aren't turning enough of a profit and want out they are highly unlikely to trim their line in order to stay in. What I could see is them staying in the market in Asia and Europe and pulling from the US. Frankly though I don't know enough about the golf business or their business model to make anything beyond a hopeful guess such as that one. We'll see. They tend to go their own way, so I wouldn't read anything into they're absence Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy ... Ad to that Mizuno knows it is basically a niche product in the US. They have a very loyal following that doesn't replace irons every year, but when they do they replace them with Mizuno's. I was very interested in the 900 Forged but went with Srixon 545's. The current line up of the 900 series should move their sales in a positive direction, although how much is anyones guess in todays equipment climate. ... It will also be interesting to see how the T7 sells this season. One of the better wedges imo since fewer and fewer wedges come with my personal preference of a dead straight leading edge. Mizuno doesn't do as much advertising as other's like Cleveland or Vokey. I have yet to see a satin T7 in any stores and the blue T7's don't seem to be moving. jaskanski
Agree that Mizuno are really a different brand in the US to the rest of Europe and Asia. As far as the US sales go, it only accounts for a small part of their sales. Mizuno worldwide are rather like Wilson in terms of sporting equipment sales - they do a lot more than just golf. And up until a few years ago, Mizuno always used to debut their new equipment in UK / Europe first - a refreshing change to get something the US couldn't. Anyways, like a lot of other brands Mizuno are struggling to make inroads against the market leaders, (not just in the US either) especially in the woods and other non-iron equipment. It would be too early to say if they would lessen or completely stop the flow of exports to the US in golfing equipment, but Bridgestone also found themselves in this predicament last year. furu
Loyal customers means nothing if you don't make money having only these customers. I agree that being absent from the show isn't a sign of anything when it comes to Mizuno. Europe is a small market, but their office is in Italy and virtually impossible to deal with. They don't even ship to Norway. We're a mini country, but actually not being able to buy Mizuno here - that's just weird.

SPY VIP Tony Covey MGS Posted January 31, 2017 SPY VIP Share Posted January 31, 2017 I've done some cursory digging on this one, and it has some steam. Not saying it's going to happen, but there does seem to be enough chatter within the industry that it's at least possible. As John said, the absence from the PGA Show is nothing (they haven't been on the floor in years) or in a conference room for the last couple, and the market is in decline. Even if their share holds steady, it's still less money in with no reduction in development costs. MyGolfSpy is only major golf site that refuses advertising from large golf companies. Sent from my VS986 using MyGolfSpy mobile app Totally agree about Adams, Nike, and Hogan. However, I think golf courses in trouble may be a location-specific phenomenon. Over the past 10 years there have been only a few courses that I know of in the Pacific Northwest that closed, and these were private. Some later open again as semi-private. If anything, I think business is good and specially in my area, we could use another course or two. I suspect that those areas where courses were over built may be suffering. If the courses here in Phoenix are suffering, you wouldn't know it!
