Callaway Chrome Soft

Hi guys.

I was looking for a forum topic on this ball and couldn't find one. I am struggling to find a ball that works well for my game. I have been playing 2-piece distance balls like the Nike PD Long (although not for long) and I have played some Snell Get Sum's as well.

These balls have worked fairly well for me off the tee, but obviously have tremendous limitations everywhere else. I have a lot of spin off the tee, so playing the tour-level balls that all the other sites seem to recommend is probably not a good option for me.

Does anybody play the Chrome Soft? From what I have read about it, it seems to be the perfect mix of low driver spin and greenside feel and spin. I have a club speed around 105-110 (I had a driver fitting in November) but all sorts of issues with inconsistent contact and I struggle with a slightly out-to-in path on occasion.

Anybody have any feedback for me? What do you guys think of the chrome soft? I know Tony hates it, but from reading this site over the last 6 months or so I seem to think he hates everything  :D

I love Chrome soft and the red truvis look. I don't like playing high spinning balls like prov1/x because I put a ton of spin on my iron shots. The CS has enough spin to stop but it doesn't spin off the green. Give it a try you shouldn't be disappointed.

The best way to figure this out is to just test different balls.  The cheapest way to do that is look for balls on the golf course.  At least at my course it seems fairly easy to find a few decent tour level balls in a round.  Then just pay attention to what you find and test them out.  Or pick up a sleeve of 2-4 balls you want to test and go play with them.

Personally I'm not a fan of the Chromesoft, it plays fine but I don't like the softer feel.  That's just a personal preference though.  I wouldn't hesitate to give the My Tour Ball a try too if you liked the Get Sum but want more spin around the greens.

Honestly you aren't going to see a ton of difference in spin off the driver.  Yes it may be a few hundred RPM's, but that is going to be the strike and your swing, not the ball.

Typically when testing balls you want to start at the green.  Find a ball that reacts to your putter and wedges the way you want it to.  Then move back to mid irons and make sure it still works.  If all that checks out it's probably going to be fine with driver.

All of this - you should find very little difference in spin off the driver and regardless the way the ball plays around the green is more significant.

Good luck

Well I'll say I love the Chrome Soft. I too, have a lot of spin off the tee, but since working on my follow through its been getting less. Not to mention I am a high handicapper and have a slower swing speed than you. I'm happy, for now, with the distance I get from the Chrome Soft off the tee and love the spin with the short irons and around the green.

I have been playing the Duo, Duo Spin & Duo Urethane lately as they were given to me by our club VP to try out. So far I really like the Duo-U best.

For our Club Championship this weekend I will be gaming the My Tour Ball by Snell. Great control off the tee and especially around the green.

I normally play a PROv1x but recently was given a sleeve of volvik vivids. I have a similar driver swing speed, and this ball absolutely exploded off the face. I honestly can say I was impressed. Doesn't spin as much around the green as the prov, but no problem holding greens. I would give them a shot, you may be surprised

I like the chrome softs but for some reason when it gets hot out I can't game them. I just end up losing distance off the tee with them. Hopefully the new chrome X will be harder to prevent this because for the price it's a great ball

2 cents...

I played the Chrome Soft most of last summer and love it. I'm not devoted to just one ball but insist on a urethane cover with any of them. Here are some of my gamers that I like in no order:

I'm going to 2nd Plaid on the MG Tour C4, since the KSig is currently unavailable. They are really hard to beat at $19/doz.

As far as the Chrome Soft, I love the feel off the wedges and putter, but with a SS around 120, it feels like a marshmallow off the driver.

I have played the chrome soft for about 1.5 years now,(ever since I ran out of Snells), that's also a good ball.

I love the Chrome soft, I typically use the black and yellow, or red and white Truvis, I am interested in the new CS X, but as I read up on it, it may produce too much spin for me. I have no issues with distance loss, if I do lose distance it's not noticable. I have played the Wilson Duo, and others like it, they don't work for me. Buy a sleeve, and try them, or PM me and I will send you a sleeve, they will be Truvis, but it won't cost you anything. Let me know.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I would love to do some serious ball testing right now, but living in Canada means that it's damn cold here right now, so testing balls is probably a no-go. I joined a winter simulator league at a local driving range and it's been keeping me sane.

I will try and do some testing, but I know sims aren't always the best for this. I picked up some chrome softs to try (truvis pattern, I like the look, but I really hate soccer) and I'm excited to test them out.

Thanks for the feedback about not decreasing driver spin. I think the sim is giving me bad numbers, I'm getting 4000-5000 RPM of spin with my 2016 M1 in the forward setting. But I also suck at golf, so I think that contributes.

I have tried nearly every ball in the world. IMO the best ball to play in winter / fall / spring golf is the Wilson Duo or Vice Tour. Inexpensive so if you lose it in the leaves or muck you won't care, far off the tee, and has some OK check. But really in those times of year, you need the extra distance.

For good weather golf, I usually play Bridgestone 330-S, Vice Pro, or Chromesoft. The Chromesoft X might be a good alternative if you are looking for something a little bit harder.

But this year, I am REALLY hearing good things about Taylormade's TP5/x line and will definitely be trying it. And that's coming from someone who won't touch Taylormade equipment with a ten foot pole.

The old TP5 was the best ball TM made. If it performs anything like the original, it will be a good ball, and sell.

I put one of these on play today and was really impressed with it!  I think I have found myself a new gamer as it works really well for my game. With my new Fusion driver and these Chrome Soft balls I was hitting some really solid shots. It's amazing how a ball that matches up to your swing etc. can make the game a bit easier.

So one thing that I found when chatting with a Bridgestone rep online was pretty cool...

I was going through the same search as OP for a golf ball earlier in the year and was really juggling around the options in my head. Reading the descriptions of these balls make it feel like there really isn't a perfect option for someone out there. They all have one positive and one negative characteristic for me. There never seemed to be a perfect fit.

Take the B-330 RXS. If you read this description for this ball, you would leave that thinking this is the highest spinning ball that Bridgestone makes. For someone like me who wants to play a high spin ball around the greens but needs low spin off the driver, this was a buzzkill. It would achieve one angle but not another. Now look at the B-330. Firmer core and less spin off the driver, but also less spin around the green. It solves one problem but not another. Catch 22. Or so it seems!

The enlightenment that I found was focused on the core of the RXS. So yes, while it will be the highest spinning ball out of their lineup around the greens, it ACTUALLY will also spin the least for me off of the driver than their other balls. Contrary to popular belief, the softer core actually lowers spin and the firmer core adds spin. Without this conversation, the RXS would have seem like the worst option in Bridgestone's lineup for me, and afterwards I find out it's the best.

The point of the story is to make sure you ask someone about the tech in what you're considering. I played the MTB all season last year and loved it. When I went for my fitting I found out that it actually was costing me 3 MPH of ball speed. It has nothing to do with the quality of ball, just my impact as a golfer. Make sure you test these things in a real world environment but I feel it is just as important to test with a launch monitor to verify the data you're seeing on the course. Also talk to these companies to make sure you're choosing the best ball in their lineup!

While I never got along with the Chrome Soft, I've been testing the Chrome Soft X for a few rounds now and think I have found my ball. It's longer off the driver for me and I'm hitting it really well with my wedges. Make sure you try both versions of the Chrome Soft if you are testing.

A question for you Chrome Soft users:

My normal "go to" ball is Pro V1 or 1X. I used to play the TaylorMade TP5 a few years ago..... I really liked that ball. It became unavailable, or the name changed so many times I didn't know what I was buying, so I just went back to Titleist.

I have played TaylorMade Project (a) a few times and I also like those quite a bit. So...... how does the Chrome Soft stack up against the Project(a) and the ProV1/X?

Like Plaid, I want a ball with a urethane cover.

You ball choices are the same as mine.

Good news is TaylorMade is coming back with the TP5 this spring as a 5 piece ball.
