Driver Shafts

Samson

Recommended Posts

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my custom fit Srixon Combo set - and have been "informed" by my Valentine this year that my golf budget is tapped out. To that end I am building a set around these irons by way of second hand equipment and am currently working on my driver.

I swing really fast and my Fly Z+ tends to balloon. It goes a really long way - usually carrying 280-290 as per flightscope, but just stops where it lands. I have zero experience with aftermarket shafts and was wondering if anyone has any experience buying used ones. I'm currently looking at a Black Tie 5m3. Has anyone had any luck with any of the low spin low launch shafts and are willing to spare some advice?

For me to recommend any thing would be the equivalent of closing my eyes and throwing a dart at a board.

That said a black tie is a pretty inexpensive experiment.  Check out golfdealsandsteals1 on ebay.  I have no ties to that seller, but they have some good deals on black tie shafts.

I'm in a golf club trader group on facebook, has over 10k members and there are always used aftermarket shafts on there, at good prices.   PM me if you want a link, I don't think I should post it here.   As long as you pay w/ Paypal, it's as secure as Ebay.

Haha that would be it! Stuff can be tough to come by there sometimes with as many people there are in it. Some of the childish antics get a bit old at times too. But there's some really cool stuff that flows through that group.

It has it's good and bad, I've had decent success selling some equipment there and avoiding Ebay fees.  Also have bought a few things, and have yet to have a bad experience.

I second this! I bought a proto Project X Shaft off of ebay from them for $60 brand new never cut. Sent an email to someone at Project X and they confirmed it was a tour only proto made for a player that was the HZRDUS Black profile.

They sell only quality gear

Sure - finding the correct shaft is not a matter of luck, but more as a result of being correctly fitted and common sense. My advice is to see a fitter with a decent reputation, whilst probably ignoring any anecdotes from anyone who says a certain shaft worked for them. You're not them. And we're not you.

Make sense?

You steal all the fun out of being a club ho :)

But yes, this!!!  For the cost of one or two failed experiments in the shaft market you can pay for a quality fitting and remove the guess work!

I used to be a competitive power lifter... It's taken some serious work to be able to keep a driver in play.

... If your distance comes from power and not technique, I would recommend trying the Nunchuk shaft. My son is a recent ex college DE and is still very explosive as he continues his workouts. A normal looking swing but just crazy power and he too struggles to control it. Couldn't hit a driver until I installed a Nunchuk. Still hits it off line but no more hooks or slices more of a push or a pull now. Great shaft for anyone really but really good for very strong players.

OP getting fit is correct answer.

But more than likely you are going to need something heavy and low launching.

These may give you some ideas but is no substitute for getting properly fit. https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/18081-120mph-swing-speed-driver-shaft-recommendations/?view=findpost&p=248047&hl=%2B120+%2Bmph+%2Bspeed+%2Bshaft+%2Bsuggestions

Get fit...figure out what bend profile and weight you need and then go from there - There are a ton of shafts which run the gamut in price, but you can't really figure out where to start unless you get some good baseline info...

I would also agree with h getting a fitting. Another thought as I read this is why go so light if you are struggling with dispersion? I have a fairly smooth tempo and have played the 7 series black tie in a few drivers with a lot of success.
