Will Tiger Make The Ryder Cup Team?

Recommended Posts

I read in the paper that Cory Pavin is planning to talk to Tiger about the Ryder Cup Team. It seems that unless Tiger can earn some point between now and the season end, he may not make the team. Presumably Corey wants to talk to Tiger about he would want to be chosen as a captain's pick or not.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

let him sit this one out. Personally I find golf without Tiger much more interesting, plus it would give someone who is actually performing a chance to help the team actually win.

Nothing helps you find a lost ball better than a provisional hit straight down the middle.

If Pavin left Tiger off the team I would fire him then and there (if I could that is. As my currest position stands I have no power to fire the Ryder Cup Captain ;) ). Tiger might not be performing at his top level but he is still the best player in the world. He gives them the best chance to win.

While I don't feel quite as strongly as Jamo, I'm definitely on that side of the argument. Tiger is still the #1 player in the world and he will make the team better. He will only get better as he gets further removed from the divorce/scandal/etc.

I disagree with jamo... Tiger should earn the spot, not just be given it to him because of his past, ummm performance. Furthermore, despite the rankings which have no bearing on current play, Woods is not the best player now... nor will he ever be again. Finally, it would be nice to watch golf without constant coverage of Tiger Woods. I mean jeeese only so much of a bad thing, please!

I predict Tiger will return to no.1 (if indeed he even loses that position)

I also predict he'll beat Jacks record.

I also also predict a lot of the 'Tiger Bashing' will stop once he rolls in the wining putt at the PGA ;)

No matter whether it is justified or not, the TW bashing won't stop. It hasn't since he came on the scene and I don't see it stopping till he retires from the Champion's Tour. Some people just can't stand TW, for whatever reason. *shrugs* Their perogative...

Now, all that said.. I agree PD... I think the further he gets from the personal problems, the better he is going to get and the PGA is a definite possibility. As far as Tiger "earning" the spot on the Ryder Cup team... he's in 8th place out of 8 "earnable" positions. *shrugs* How much more does he have to do considering the number of tourney's he's been in this year? Standings as of yesterday:

1 Phil Mickelson 17 5768.75

2 Steve Stricker 17 3402.68

3 Jim Furyk 19 3280.09

4 Anthony Kim 12 3238.31

5 Lucas Glover 20 2980.87

6 Dustin Johnson 21 2936.14

7 Matt Kuchar 21 2890.96

8 Tiger Woods 11 2773.31

Even with just over 1/2 the tourneys played, he's in 8th. I'd guess that says something!!

You're so right golf without Tiger is so much better then golf with. ARE YOU NUTS? I would love to hear who you think is the best and who will be the best for the next 5 years.

My point is, I am so tired/annoyed at the drama he has brought to the game. The coverage before was always on TW but at least then his performance merited it. Now the coverage is even more obvious and what's worse it's not because of his golf, it's because every person is watching for him to falter and say see 'told you so'.

He has not played up to 'his level' and he never will. So, let's move on and find the next phenom and quit dwelling on this now common golfer.

Despite being a Tiger fan, I was really going to stop posting to this thread, but the bolded comment is just absurd. How many other golfers were Top 5 at 2 of the 3 majors this year and Top 25 at all 3? I would hardly call that a "common" accomplishment. Up to his normal standards? No, but to say that he'll never be great again is ridiculous.

Tiger didn't bring any drama to the game, the press did. They need to sell newspapers / receive hits to their websites.

Fact - Tiger isn't the first golfer to have extra marital activities and he certainly won't be the last!

Was he foolish? Yes! Did he deserve to get caught? Yes! Has it distracted him and slowed his progress in catching Jacks haul of majors? Yes!

However, I'm more interested in the golf side of golf. Always have been. I forsee Tiger getting back to where he was pretty soon. Form is temporary, (and as stated his form in majors is pretty damn good anyway!) class is permanent. Whether his behaviour off the golf course was classy isn't on my mind. He is and will be remembered as the best if he catches and passes Mr. J Nicklaus in major titles won.

Awards are an indicator of what you did in the past. Its not like its been 5 years since TW has won anything. FIGJAM has one only one win this year, and hasn't done all that much in the other tourney's hes been in, but he's still considered one of the best. Is he a has-been since its been a couple months since he won?

"Colin Montgomerie 'pulls a Tiger,' and we're not talking about golf."

Yes - but he is not GGtG either, so no big deal. (ummm Gods Gift to Golf?)

MidMoMan, are there any golfers that you actually like?

Tiger - no. 1 golfer in the world for many years.

Monty - no. 1 golfer in Europe for many years.

Anyway, back to the subject... A U.S. team without Tiger Woods playing will be seen by us Euros as being weaker. I guarantee, the guy playing him Sunday in the singles would be worried if he's about to go out and 'do a Tiger', ie destroy the golf course like only he can.

Even though I'd love to see Europe lift the cup again, I'd actually love more to see Tiger come out as top scorer and continue his dominance of the sport.
