Kenny B
The last few days the maintenance crews have been working on the greenside bunker on our par 4 #3 hole. This is our #1 handicap hole. Here's a pic of the hole looking back towards the tee as it looked before they started; water all the way along the right side of the fairway and in front of the green, a pot bunker between the water and the green, and a large bunker on the right side of the green. I have spent more than my share of time in that bunker. I was wondering what they were doing to it... until today. They laid sod in it. Although it will make the hole easier for me, I think it totally changes the difficulty of the hole. I guess the club is cutting back on costs; sand bunkers are expensive to maintain. We don't have a lot of bunkers, but the ones we have are pretty big and take a lot of sand. Now I wonder if any others will be removed. Golfspy_CG2
That's a beautiful looking course Kenny. You are rights about the expense to maintain them. But that bunker looks like it is a pretty integral part of the hole. Often times its fairway bunkers that don't add much to a hole that are removed. STUDque
Man that makes me sad Kenny. Green side bunkers are so important to the aesthetics and play of a course. For one of my par 3s, they filled in 2-3 small bunkers but left the big, signature bunker (thank God). I understand the cost factor but it still hurts me regardless. Tbh, I'd rather be in a bunker than rough for those shots anyway. BTW, they hate me also. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy For me it really depends on the rough. I never played much from the sand until I joined this course two years ago. My old course didn't have any bunkers. Since I have been here, I have had to learn how to hit out of them. I'm getting better. Some places I play have terrible rough and I think I would rather be in a bunker. However, this greenside bunker has been a beast for me. If I am close to the green, it's not a bad shot but the lip is was about 3 feet. Like I said, it is a rather large bunker, not wide, but long. If my approach shot is too far to the right of the green, then it's a 25 yard bunker shot. I would usually end up still in the bunker just short of the green. Oh BTW, the green slopes away to a lower tier.
