Took a couple of our staff out for a round at one of the other courses in the area today. Also thanks to dilgaf and Big Ball for coming out. Big ball is a new member in recruitment stage!!

The first course Oak Creek is semi-private. And do to it being a Momday and a bit windy and wet after an overnight rain, we pretty much had the course to ourselves.

attachicon.gifIMG_0490.JPG

attachicon.gifIMG_0491.JPG

Then it was onto one of the courses in our group about 2 miles down the road for an awesome lunch. Check out these sandwiches and fries.

Some locals know Lake Presidential has had it challenges the past couple years. But let me tell you. Conditions are 1000% improved there. They bit the bullet last fall and redid every fairway and most tee boxes. They have been cart path only all year this year to let the grass grow. It has obviously cost them some play. But you can't argue with the results. Fairways today were a bit long and due to a lot of rain the past several days.

My prediction is this will return on 2018 to being one of the premier courses in the DMV.

Cannot believe you're leaving all that to go into imminent hardcore frigid Winter in the Windy City... The I guess the wind can blow out in Utah, to, but point is: did you see those pics of that storm a few years ago where Chicago's Lakeshore Drive literally got frozen solid?

The last few days the maintenance crews have been working on the greenside bunker on our par 4 #3 hole.  This is our #1 handicap hole.  Here's a pic of the hole looking back towards the tee as it looked before they started; water all the way along the right side of the fairway and in front of the green, a pot bunker between the water and the green, and a large bunker on the right side of the green.

attachicon.gifIMG_0352.jpg

I have spent more than my share of time in that bunker.  I was wondering what they were doing to it... until today.  They laid sod in it.

attachicon.gifIMG_0779.jpg

Although it will make the hole easier for me, I think it totally changes the difficulty of the hole.  I guess the club is cutting back on costs; sand bunkers are expensive to maintain.  We don't have a lot of bunkers, but the ones we have are pretty big and take a lot of sand. Now I wonder if any others will be removed.

Well, a month ago my course tore up this greenside bunker and laid sod in it.  I thought it was going to be a grass bunker and it changed the difficulty of this hole.  The bunker is still under construction, but as you can see in this pic, it has sand in it again!!

IMG_0801.jpg

I was told that by laying sod and giving it time to develop a root structure, it prevents rocks from coming up into the sand.  In the reconstruction of the bunker, they also smoothed out the edges by the green making it easier to walk into the bunker.  It was impossible to get into the bunker by the green since it was a steep 3-4 foot drop-off.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Fall golf in Denver is amazing! My final round at historic City Park-Denver before they tear it up for a city storm water/drainage project. Closes for 2 years, and comes back as a new Hale Irwin design. Not sure how I feel about the remodel, but time will tell. Will definitely miss the old course!!

Got some fall golf in yesterday at Shining Rock Golf Course in Northbridge, MA.  Love the colors this time of year!

The contrast of the leaves changing with the blue sky and green grass is so awesome.  Tried to get some good pics but my crappy phone camera doesn't really do it justice...

It was a pretty tight course with a number of short par 4's (300ish) but really narrow fairways and extremely difficult greens.  The greens yesterday were like linoleum... I hit a short chip off the back that went about 10 feet and ended rolling off the green and about 20 yards into the fairway.

I think the pros play on these types of greens all the time but it was a definite surprise!

Apparently they blasted a ton of rock out to build the course and there were a ton of elevation changes - you cannot walk this course - but it is rated as one of the top in the Boston area; if you get a chance and you're out this way you should play it.

I've played in a few junior tournaments at Lake Presidential.  It's a nice course, but plays really tough when it is late fall when the wind is blowing.  I remember I played a tournament there the day Hurricane Sandy hit.  Needless to say, that course played HARD.  It also hosted, in a tournament, one of my first good chances at breaking 80, but it was an "attempt" of course, and that course beat me up badly in the end.

I don't normally do this, but we just returned from a bucket list trip. My dad, brother, and I played 8 rounds in 7 days, and the time spent was priceless. Just wanted to give a shout out to my old man for putting it all together. Thanks, Dad. Love ya!
